Stanley Miller and the Quest to Understand Life's Beginning

Thursday 26th July saw the launch of SciLogs.com, a new English language science blog network. SciLogs.com, the brand-new home for Nature Network bloggers, forms part of the SciLogs international collection of blogs which already exist in German, Spanish and Dutch. To celebrate this addition to the NPG science blogging family, some of the NPG blogs are publishing posts focusing on ?Beginnings.? Participating?in this cross-network blogging festival is nature.com?s Soapbox Science blog, Scitable?s Student Voices blog and bloggers from SciLogs.com, SciLogs.de, Scitable and Scientific American?s Blog Network. Join us as we explore the diverse interpretations of beginnings ? from scientific examples such as stem cells?to first time experiences such as publishing your first paper. You can also follow and contribute to the conversations on social media by using the #BeginScights hashtag. ? Bora

In the spirit of ?beginnings,? I?m serving up this lightly edited excerpt from The End of Science (1996) on life?s origin, which?tellingly?has not been rendered obsolete by any subsequent research.? John Horgan

One of the 20th century?s most diligent and respected origin-of-life researchers is Stanley Miller. He was a 23-year-old graduate student in 1953 when he sought to recreate the origin of life in a laboratory. He filled a sealed glass apparatus with a few liters of methane, ammonia and hydrogen (representing the atmosphere) and some water (the oceans). A spark-discharge device zapped the gases with simulated lightning, while a heating coil kept the waters bubbling. Within a few days, the water and gases were stained with a reddish goo. On analyzing the substance, Miller found to his delight that it was rich in amino acids. These organic compounds are the building blocks of proteins, the basic stuff of life.

Miller?s results seemed to provide stunning evidence that life could arise out what the British chemist J.B.S. Haldane had called the ?primordial soup.? Pundits speculated that scientists, like Mary Shelley?s Dr. Frankenstein, would shortly conjure up living organisms in their laboratories and thereby demonstrate in detail how genesis unfolded. It hasn?t worked out that way. In fact, almost 40 years after his original experiment, Miller told me that solving the riddle of the origin of life had turned out to be more difficult than he or anyone else had envisioned. He recalled one prediction, made shortly after his experiment, that within 25 years scientists would ?surely? know how life began. ?Well, 25 years have come and gone,? Miller said drily.

After his 1953 experiment, Miller had dedicated himself to the search for the secret of life. He developed a reputation as both a rigorous experimentalist and a bit of a curmudgeon, someone who is quick to criticize what he feels is shoddy work. When I met Miller in 1990 in his office at the University of California at San Diego, where he is a professor of biochemistry, he fretted that his field still has a reputation as a fringe discipline, not worthy of serious pursuit.

?Some work is better than others,? he said. ?The stuff that is awful does tend to drag it down. I tend to get very upset about that. People do good work, and then you see this garbage attract attention.? In fact, Miller seemed unimpressed with any of the current proposals on the origin of life, referring to them as ?nonsense? or ?paper chemistry.? He was so contemptuous of some hypotheses that, when I asked his opinion of them, he merely shook his head, sighed deeply and snickered?as if overcome by the folly of humanity. Stuart Kauffman?s theory of ?autocatalysis? fell into this category. ?Running equations through a computer does not constitute an experiment,? Miller sniffed.

Miller acknowledged that scientists may never know precisely where and when life emerged. ?We?re trying to discuss an historical event, which is very different from the usual kind of science, and so criteria and methods are very different,? he remarked. But when I suggested that Miller sounded pessimistic about the prospects for discovering life?s secret, he looked appalled. Pessimistic? Certainly not! He was optimistic!

One day, he vowed, scientists would discover the self-replicating molecule that triggered the great saga of evolution. Just as the discovery of the microwave radiation pervading space legitimized cosmology, so would the discovery of the first genetic material legitimize Miller?s field. ?It would take off like a rocket,? Miller muttered through clenched teeth. Will such a discovery be immediately self-apparent? Miller nodded. ?It will be in the nature of something that will make you say, ?Jesus, there it is. How could you have overlooked this for so long?? And everybody will be totally convinced.?

When Miller performed his landmark experiment in 1953, most scientists still shared Darwin?s belief that proteins were the likeliest candidates for self-reproducing molecules, since proteins were thought to be capable of reproducing and organizing themselves into cells. After the discovery that DNA is the basis for genetic transmission, many researchers began to favor nucleic acids over proteins as the ur-molecules. But there was a major hitch in this scenario. DNA can make neither proteins nor copies of itself without the help of catalytic proteins called enzymes. This fact turned the origin of life into a classic chicken-or-egg problem: Which came first, proteins or DNA?

In the 1960s the molecular biologist Gunther Stent proposed that this conundrum could be solved by a self-replicating molecule that could act as its own catalyst. In the early 1980?s, researchers identified just such a molecule: ribonucleic acid, or RNA, a single-strand molecule that serves as DNA?s helpmate in manufacturing proteins. Experiments revealed that certain types of RNA could act as their own enzymes, snipping themselves in two and splicing themselves back together again. If RNA could act as an enzyme then it might also be able to replicate itself without help from proteins. RNA could serve as both gene and catalyst, egg and chicken.

But the so-called ?RNA-world? hypothesis suffers from several problems. RNA and its components are difficult to synthesize under the best of circumstances, in a laboratory, let alone under plausible prebiotic conditions. Once RNA is synthesized, it can make new copies of itself only with a great deal of chemical coaxing from the scientist. The origin of life ?has to happen under easy conditions, not ones that are very special,? Miller said. He is convinced that some simpler?and possibly quite dissimilar?molecule must have paved the way for RNA.

Lynn Margulis, for one, doubts whether investigations of the origin of life will yield the kind of simple, self-validating answer that Miller dreams of. ?I think that may be true of the cause of cancer but not of the origin of life,? Margulis said when I spoke to her in 1994. Life, she pointed out, emerged under complex environmental conditions. ?You have day and night, winter and summer, changes in temperature, changes in dryness. These things are historical accumulations. Chemical systems are effectively historical accumulations. So I don?t think there is ever going to be a packaged recipe for life: add water and mix and get life. It?s not a single step process. It?s a cumulative process that involves a lot of changes.?

The smallest bacterium, she noted, ?is so much more like people than Stanley Miller?s mixtures of chemicals, because it already has these system properties. So to go from a bacterium to people is less of a step than to go from a mixture of amino acids to that bacterium.?

Francis Crick once wrote that ?the origin of life appears to be almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have to be satisfied to get it going.? (Crick, it should be noted, is an agnostic leaning toward atheism.) Crick proposed that aliens visiting the earth in a spacecraft billions of years ago may have deliberately seeded it with microbes.

Perhaps Stanley Miller?s hope will one day be fulfilled: scientists will find some clever chemical or combination of chemicals that can reproduce, mutate and evolve under plausible prebiotic conditions. The discovery is sure to launch a new era of applied chemistry. (The vast majority of researchers focus on this goal, rather than the elucidation of life?s origin.) But given our lack of knowledge about the conditions under which life began, any theory of life?s origin based on such a finding will always be subject to doubts. Miller has faith that biologists will know the answer to the riddle of life?s origin when they see it. But his belief rests on the premise that the answer will be plausible, if only retrospectively. Who said the origin of life on earth was plausible? Life might have emerged from a freakish convergence of improbable and even unimaginable events.

Moreover, the discovery of a plausible ur-molecule, when or if it happens, is unlikely to tell us what we really want to know: Was life on earth inevitable or a freak occurrence? Has it happened elsewhere or only in this lonely, lonely spot? These questions can only be resolved if we discover life beyond the earth. Society seems increasingly reluctant to underwrite such investigations. In 1993, Congress shut down NASA?s SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program, which scanned the heavens for radio signals generated by other civilizations. The dream of missions to Mars?manned or otherwise?is growing fainter.

Even so, scientists may find evidence of life beyond the earth tomorrow. Such a discovery would transform all of science and philosophy and human thought. Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins might be able to settle their argument over whether natural selection is a cosmic or merely terrestrial phenomenon (although each would doubtless find ample evidence for his point of view). Stuart Kauffman might be able to determine whether the ?laws? he discerns in his computer simulations prevail in the real world. If the extraterrestrials are intelligent enough to have developed their own science, physicist Edward Witten may learn whether superstring theory really is the inevitable culmination of any search for the fundamental rules governing reality. Science fiction will become fact. The New York Times will resemble one of those supermarket tabloids that prints ?photographs? of Presidents hobnobbing with aliens. One can always hope.

Postscript: Of?the scientists mentioned above, only Stuart Kauffman, Richard Dawkins and Ed Witten are still alive. Stanley Miller, Lynn Margulis, Gunther Stent,?Stephen Jay Gould and Francis Crick have died, and their scientific survivors seem as far as ever from understanding life?s beginning(s?).

The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry (a Sydney food blog ...

The Larder, Otto, Woolloomooloo

Here's one upside to weeknights ??until September 27, it gives you a good excuse to visit The Larder, the pop-up taking place at Otto Ristorante in Woolloomooloo.

The Larder, Otto, Woolloomooloo

Otto is great, undoubtedly, but the first I dined there in 2007, I did feel like an income-bracket tourist. It's a restaurant known for its ritzy celebrity clientele, after all, and my salary has zero ritz attached. My poker face got good practice when I saw the orange juice cost $8. It was a damn fine fresh-squeezed OJ, though, full of high-brace citrus and sweetness. The meal was course-by-course brilliance, but as much as I loved it, it just wasn't the kind of place I could afford to go to regularly.

The Larder, Otto, Woolloomooloo

This is what makes The Larder so excellent ? it's Otto for the everyday. In fact, at the pop-up, my entire dinner (including dessert and a drink) cost the same as the main course I last had at Otto. Not only is The Larder wallet-appeasing, the food is damn good. The Pearl Barley Risotto ($15) is wonderfully light and spring-loaded with corn, mushroom and pea flavours. The Potato Rosti ($15) is a delicious, pan-crisp base camp for the roasted capsicum, feta, rocket and addictively smoky eggplant that sits on top. Will's Pork Belly ($25) was equal parts tender and juicy and well supported by a light, honey-dressed salad of brussel sprouts, walnuts and radicchio. These are the sorts of great things you can expect from the kitchen of Otto head chef, Richard Ptacnik.

The Larder, Otto, Woolloomooloo

Adding to the budget-friendly nature of The Larder is the fact you can BYO. If you don't get a chance to detour to a bottle shop beforehand, though, you can pick a drink from Otto's lengthy list or enjoy one of the specials (such as a winter-compatible glass of mulled wine).

It's also worth noting the other one-off additions to the nightly menu ? especially with the desserts. We had a Pear and Rhubarb Crumble that was worth that extra level of detective work. The Larder, Otto, Woolloomooloo

So check out The Larder while it's around ??you don't even need to practice your poker face. It's hard to undo the smile you get from enjoying such excellent, reasonably priced food.

The Larder pop-up, Monday-Friday, 6-10pm, Otto Ristorante, Area 8, 6 Cowper Wharf Rd, Woolloomooloo NSW (02) 9368 7488, www.ottoristorante.com.au/#/ciao/the-larder

Abbey East Animal Hospital Launches Redesigned Pet Care Website

WARREN, Mich., July 29, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Warren pet owners have a new resource for learning more about pet care. Abbey East Animal Hospital announced the launch of its redesigned website, http://abbeyeastanimalhospital.com. The site features a new, user-friendly interface that is designed to make it easy for pet owners to find needed pet health information. Pet owners may also access the 'Veterinary Topics' library to learn more about at-home wellness care, visit the video newsroom or find answers to common questions in the Vetopedia.

Warren veterinarian Dr. Denise Graye and veterinarian Dr. Wayne Gilchrist announced that the veterinary practice, Abbey East Animal Hospital, has launched a redesigned website. The entire site underwent a full visual redesign to make it easier for pet owners to find critical pet care information.

"Our redesigned website reflects our veterinary clinic's commitment to high quality, affordable pet care," said Dr. Graye. "We believe that a pet's long, healthy life begins with at-home wellness. We want to make it easy for pet owners to learn more about the basics of care and answer any questions they may have. We're excited to share this new website with our valued clients."

As part of the website's redesign, the site now features the "Veterinary Topics" library. This online reference includes pet training tips, seasonal care tips, and a video newsroom. Pet owners may also access the Vetopedia to learn more about the different terms used by vets when treating pets.

"As a veterinarian, I believe it's important for pet owners to have access to the latest veterinary care news," said Dr. Gilchrist. "Unfortunately, some information online is outdated or simply inaccurate. It can be difficult for pet owners to know what they can trust. That's why we are excited to offer new resources like the Vetopedia. We also encourage pet owners to sign up for our bi-weekly e-newsletter."

Pet owners who sign up for the e-newsletter will also receive free membership to the website. This includes access to the members-only web content, such as Pets4Kids and PetTV.

Pet owners who visit the website can learn more about the services and wellness packages available at the pet clinic. These include spay and neuter surgeries, microchipping, vaccinations, dental care, and annual exams. As part of the practice's puppy and kitten care services, the vets provide the full puppy/kitten vaccine series, deworming, and wellness care exams. Emergency vet services are also available.

Points On Generating Money On Business Real Estate Through Gas ...

Buying a commercial property, for instance a gas station, is totally different than buying a house, so don?t treat them as identical transactions. The following advice will help you get the best deal on your property.

If your house is near a hospital, university or other large employment centers, they will usually sell quicker and also, at a higher value.

Accept responses to the initial proposals, but don?t go further than that unless you inform the property owners. Do not fear letting the owners know that you are interested in other properties. Letting this fact slip may even result in your getting a more lucrative deal.

Try to get a presence online prior to jumping into the market. Add yourself to LinkedIn, or better, create your very own website. Optimize your website for search engines so that you can get a good rank high on the results page. Ideally, people will be able to easily find your site or profile by keying your name into a search engine.

If you are renting or leasing, be sure to know about pest control arrangements. It is even more important to look into the building?s pest control policies if you are looking to rent or lease in a region where building pests are common.

Enter the world of commercial real estate with the right frame of mind, and you can find success. Keep the advice from this article in mind and apply it to your own commercial real estate dealings. Lynn's College of Business and Management creates new internship

July 26, 2012 ????? 0 Comments

Lynn-University pic

BOCA RATON? Lynn University has created an innovative new program to support and help prepare students in the?College of Business and Management?for a career in the business world.

Rick Sayers, who has served as the executive in residence of the college for the past three years, has been named executive director of new Internships and Cooperative Education Program. The goal is to help students discover their intellectual and personal strengths through formal preparation to include: mock interviews (face-to-face, phone and Skype), resume and cover letter writing, business etiquette skills and personality profile (Myers-Briggs).

?Getting Lynn students ready for a successful professional life after college is a primary responsibility,? said Sayers.? ?This program will give them an advantage in obtaining internships and cooperative education experience and make them better prepared to meet, interview and work with individuals in the business community.?

An important component of the program will be the business relationships that will be developed with the corporate and business community. ?We will reach out to organizations that match up with the skills, interests and global diversity of our students for mutually beneficial partnerships,? he said.

Contacts have already been made with Office Depot, PwC, Sherwin Williams, Parker Hannifin, Jarden, Via Mizner, 02 media Inc., AXA Equitable and C3 Interactive and others.

In hiring students for internships Sayers said corporations are looking for the opportunity to ?test drive? potential employees before making a permanent offer. They also look for intelligent, energetic talent with summer and/or school year projects. Students benefit by experiencing the company culture, management style and other organizational dynamics before having to make a decision for full time employment as well.

Internships are required in virtually all COBM curriculums. Though this program will initially be rolled out in the COBM, it is expected to expand to the other colleges.

?We are very fortunate to have Rick as executive director to lead this new program,? said Thomas Kruczek, dean of the College of Business and Management.? ?With his extensive background in human resources in the corporate space, he knows exactly what corporations are looking for in new hires and he will do an outstanding job of getting our students ready.?

Sayers has more than 35 years of senior executive human resources and corporate business leadership experience. He was executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Agilysys Inc., an IT solutions corporation; a managing director for the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) practice at Price Water house Coopers LLP; and corporate vice president for human resources at Invacare Corporation, a billion dollar leading manufacturer of home health care products.? He began his career at TRW, a Fortune 100 automotive and aerospace organization where he rose to the level of human resources vice president for the Global Steering and Suspension business.

Bounties Vilma FootballAP

As Jonathan Vilma marches into a Louisiana courtroom in the hopes of being able very soon to march onto the field with the rest of the Saints, he will bring with him eight potential witnesses.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Vilma plans to call interim head coach Joe Vitt and current/former teammates Scott Shanle, Jonathan Casillas, Roman Harper, Sedrick Ellis, Troy Evans, and Randall Gay.

We?re told that Darren Sharper also could be a late addition, if he can get to court in time.

Not on the list is Drew Brees, who has submitted an affidavit in support of Vilam?s effort to lift his suspension while the lawsuit challenging the one-year ban proceeds.

Also not on the list but submitting an affidavit is Pierson Prioleau, who played with the Saints from 2009 through 2011 and with three other teams coached by former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.? Prioleau explains that Williams? pre-game rantings ?were exactly the same for every team.?? Prioleau says the players regarded the tough talk as a motivational speech, and that the players ?were always reminded to never hurt the team with illegal or selfish play.?

?I?ve never seen anyone rewarded for any illegal action or for injuring another player,? Prioleau says.

Prioleau?s affidavit doesn?t mention whether Williams used a pay-for-performance system that rewarded players for rendering opponents unable to continue via good, clean, legal hits.

Vilma also plans to introduce more than 20 exhibits, consisting of among other things portions of the league?s investigation file and letters exchanged regarding the suspension and Vilma?s decision not to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell before or after the suspension was imposed.

Whether Vilma is likely to eventually win the war is one of the factors that Judge Helen G. Berrigan will consider in deciding the outcome of this key battle.? Others include whether he?ll suffer ?irreparable harm? if he?s suspended now and later wins the case, and whether more damage will be done to Vilma with the suspension kept in place or to the NFL with the suspension lifted.? Also, the ?public interest? is a common, but often nebulous, factor in efforts of this nature.

The StarCaps litigation resulted in the a court blocking multiple suspensions until the litigation was resolved.? In that case, the ?irreparable harm? factor drove the outcome.? It could, in this case, be the determining factor, too.

Judge Berrigan could rule on the motion at the hearing, or she could take the matter under advisement and rule later.? Either way, time is of the essence; Vilma can?t participate in any practices or preseason games unless and until the suspension is lifted.

Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua jumps out of a plane (VIDEO)

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's first fight since his epic brawl with Dan Henderson will happen at UFC on Fox 4 on Aug. 4. What's the best way to prepare for the bout with Brandon Vera? Jumping out of an airplane, of course.

At no point does he look scared. Perhaps taking Jon Jones elbows and living to tell about it is a way to remove fear from jumping out of a plane. He made the jump on July 1, so he had plenty of time to recover before his bout next week in L.A.

Costner sues studio over 'Robin Hood' profits

Warner Bros.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves."

By Eriq Gardner, The Hollywood Reporter

Kevin Costner is saying he hasn't received any profits from his "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" film in the past two years and is accusing Morgan Creek Productions of being the prince of thieves by hiding money from him.

A lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court by the actor starts out with very harsh words for Morgan Creek, the independent studio that backed the 1991 blockbuster. "Every actor hopes to star in a great movie that makes substantial profits," Costner's lawsuit alleges. "But if you're hoping to earn profits based on the success of your film and you want to be paid on a timely basis, then one company you certainly do not want to do business with is Defendant Morgan Creek Productions."

The film, directed by Kevin Reynolds, grossed about $390 million worldwide and tens of millions more in TV, home video and other sources.

Costner, represented by Marty Singer and Michael Holtz at Lavely & Singer, says that Morgan Creek promised it would share profits with him but "when it came time to report and account ... Morgan Creek was less than forthcoming," with no participation statements rendered in 2010 and 2011 and late statements from 2004 to 2009.

Stephen Baldwin denied new trial against Kevin Costner

Reached for comment, Morgan Creek CEO James Robinson characterized the dispute with Costner as minor and insignificant. "Why is it after 22 years Mr. Costner finds fault with our accounting procedures or for that matter our way of doing business?" Robinson says. "We have paid him over $40 million. I think we've been very nice to him. I wonder how much money he has made from other films where he is participant. We've been very straight with him."

The actor says that the studio has simply stopped sending him accounting statements, and the ones it previously provided "intentionally concealed information and employed inaccurate and improper accounting practices designed to deprive Mr. Costner of his backend participation."

Costner's deal, according to the complaint, entitled him to 12.5 percent of the adjusted gross receipts of the picture in excess of $60 million and 15 percent of the AGR in excess of $100 million. As for home distribution, Costner says he was entitled to amounts received by Morgan Creek less a 25 percent distribution fee or 10 percent of the wholesale price of gross receipts, whichever was greater.

In the lawsuit, Morgan Creek is accused of making financial arrangements to hide money from him.

Kevin Costner in talks to star in Disney's sports drama "McFarland"

Costner's agreement for "Robin Hood" purportedly did not give Morgan Creek the right to make any outright sale of rights to the picture without obtaining the assumption of obligations to Costner. Despite that, in 2006, Morgan Creek is said to have assigned to Robinson's wholly-owned international division (Inverness) the foreign distribution rights to 41 of its film titles including "Robin Hood" for $21 million.

"Defendants breached the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing by packaging the Picture in the international territories for free, basic and pay television distribution and taking the package fees and allocating them evenly across all pictures in the package, rather than allocating the package fees according to the performances and true value of the pictures in the package."

The claim calls to mind producer Alan Ladd, Jr.'s claims against Warner Bros. for underallocating license fees in large packages sold overseas and to TV outlets. That lawsuit was settled after a jury ruled in Ladd's favor.

Costner's lawsuit also takes exception to other alleged Morgan Creek acts.

The actor's deal also purportedly limited the deduction of certain checking and collection costs to one percent of gross receipts. The lawsuit says that Morgan Creek has violated this by deducting $2 million depite no evidence that costs were actually incurred and despite the fact this was more than two times what Warner Bros. as the distributor charged Morgan Creek.

In addition, Costner says that Morgan Creek has failed to report all revenues received on television sales and failed to disclose the amount of home video gross receipts and instead reported 10 percent of Warner Bros.' gross. The actor's attorneys say that the alleged fraudulent concealment only was discovered after an audit was conducted last autumn.

He's now suing for breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, fraud, and unjust enrichment. He's seeking general and punitive damages to be proven at trial.

Responding to the allegations, Robinson points out that "Robin Hood" was a film that came out more than two decades ago and that it isn't unusual in the industry for participant statements for such films to come late. He says that the two sides were in negotiations before the lawsuit was filed and that Costner's reps were taking inconsistent positions with respect to accounting. He adds that Morgan Creek uses a "very fair formula" that was modeled after studios, and says in reference to allegedly underreported income such as television revenues, "If we received it, we reported it."

Morgan Creek has used Patty Glaser as its litigator in the past. Unless resolved, the dispute appears primed to be a fight in court between two A-list Hollywood lawyers.

BP, Transocean faulted over preventive efforts in gulf spill

WASHINGTON ? Before the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, BP and drilling rig owner Transocean focused their safety efforts on curtailing worker injury rather than preventing catastrophic well blowouts, all but ignoring critical lessons from two near-misses just before the Deepwater Horizon explosion, according to a new federal investigation of the disaster.

The report issued Tuesday by the Chemical Safety Board is the latest in a string of federal and independent inquiries into the blowout of BP's Macondo well, which killed 11 workers in the ensuing blast and spewed nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the sea, making it the country's worst offshore environmental accident.

Although each report has exposed practices and events that led to the disaster, the investigations' findings have overlapped enough to expose what was a highly dangerous deep-water drilling project marked by lax safety, poor communication and ad hoc decision-making.

The board's report suggests that BP and Transocean Ltd., along with federal regulators, should have known better. After a 2005 explosion at its Texas City, Texas, oil refinery that killed 15 employees, BP vowed to institute a new safety system that assessed risks and hazards. Five years later, the company had made progress at its onshore activities but not offshore.

"When asked about rollout in the Gulf of Mexico, a high-level BP manager stated to the CSB, 'We were just getting started,'" according to the Chemical Safety Board report.

Instead, BP, Transocean and the federal regulator, the Minerals Management Service, which has since been reorganized, paid attention to a checklist of worker slips and falls, which translate to lost man-hours and money. Even now, the report said, companies and federal regulators look at past events, such as fires and injuries, rather than adopting systems prevalent in other oil-producing countries to predict and prevent trouble.

"It is almost as if they are driving a car by looking in the rearview mirror," the report concluded.

BP said that outside inquiries and its own investigation had prompted substantial changes. "After the accident BP alone stepped up and, as the CSB has recognized, has taken concrete steps to further enhance safety and risk management throughout its global operations," the company said in a statement.

Transocean did not cooperate with the board investigation and is being sued by the Justice Department to comply with the board's subpoenas.

In a statement, Transocean said, "We are gratified that the CSB recognized Transocean's ongoing commitment to personal safety on all our rigs and in our constant drive for best practices, we will, as always, review industry recommendations regarding process safety management."

The report noted that Transocean and BP both experienced near-misses that held important lessons that could have proved useful at the Macondo well. In December 2009, in "an incident that eerily foretold the fate of the Deepwater Horizon," a Transocean drilling rig in the North Sea also had oil and gas flowing up the well onto the platform. Disaster was avoided because the blowout preventer staunched the flow. But Transocean's findings were not "fully communicated" to workers outside the North Sea.

On March 8, 2010, more than a month before the Deepwater Horizon disaster, oil and gas traveled up the Macondo well for 33 minutes before BP workers and others realized it. According to the Chemical Safety Board, BP did nothing to address the delayed response to the well "kick."

At the same time, federal regulators gave both companies prizes over the years for good safety programs. The year of the fatal disaster, Transocean awarded its top management bonuses for their safety record.

The report noted that BP, Transocean and many other companies already use a more comprehensive safety approach in countries that require it, such as Norway and Britain for North Sea operations. The report did not offer an explanation as to why BP did not employ such practices in the Gulf of Mexico, especially after the Texas City disaster.

Najmedin Meshkati, professor of civil, environmental and systems engineering at USC, said such fundamental change required a sustained commitment at the top level, which BP did not have.

Exploration and production at BP "had their own deep-seated culture" apart from the refining business, said Meshkati, a member of the National Academy of Engineering/National Research Council panel that issued its own report on the disaster. "I heard from a reliable source that in the pursuit of profits, BP's longtime CEO, Lord John Browne, unofficially adopted Oscar Wilde's quote, 'consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative,' as the company motto. And we all know well what inconsistency can do to system safety."

Cherry Almond Green Tea Smoothie Bowl : Rabbit Food For My ...

Hello lovelies!

If you follow RFFMBT on Twitter or Facebook you know that I always post a ?Motivation Monday? quote to get the week started off right! I realized that I have never posted my Motivation Monday quotes?on my blog, so today? that will change! I love starting my week feeling strong, positive, and optimistic and sometimes all you need are some motivating words to make it happen.

Motivation Monday: ?Transformation is not a future event, it?s a present activity? -Jillian Michaels

Today started off with a scrumptious smoothie bowl and a dysfunctional computer! I took my computer into the Apple Store for a Genius Bar appointment in hopes of solving my wifi issue. My computer has not been able to detect, pickup, or stay connected to wifi for the past couple of weeks and it?s been super annoying. I?ve actually had to plug my computer straight into the ethernet cord! How old school? haha So anyways, my computer ended up having all sorts of problems, so I said bye bye to my computer while it goes to the Apple spa for 3-5 days! AHHHH! Bear with me as I attempt to post from my iPad, and public library computers while my lappy is away on vacation! I will try to continue posting everyday, but if I am slow or go MIA, this is why (hence the late post)! Cross your fingers my computer is only gone 3 days versus 5!

Enough depressing talk about my beloved laptop and back to that scrumptious smoothie bowl! Today?s smoothie was so thick that it turned into an awesome smoothie bowl. I?m one of those people that could not live on juice because I would miss chewing too much. I love a good smoothie, but I can drink those babies in under 30 seconds and then start scavenging the pantry for something to ?eat.? If you just read that last sentence and said ?me too,? I have a solution for you! Smoothies are an excellent way to combine fresh nutritious foods with little prep time and zero cooking, but they can often disappear just as fast leaving you wanting more. Most smoothies are a meal within themselves, so they should leave you feeling full and satisfied. I have found a simple way to slow down my smoothie drinking pace by eating them out of a bowl with a spoon. I find that I eat slower, I can really enjoy and experience the flavor and texture of the food while allowing my body to feel full. To make sure that I slow down and enjoy my smoothie bowls, sometimes I add some RFFMBT approved healthy topping!

Allgood Provisions?sent me some yummy samples of their?Sundried Organic Utah Cherries which I generously topped my smoothie bowl with. I?ve been going cherry crazy lately, so this awesome little resealable pack of dried cherries is just the cherry on top. Ha. Thanks Allgood, I am loving my healthy grab and go snackity snacks! I?m not sure if I am the only one that obsesses over certain foods for certain periods of time, but it has been happening a lot lately (remember the carrot cake?)! I bought a huge bag of cherries, so I?ve been on a cherry kick making as many healthy goodies as possible. Don?t worry, if you?re sick of cherries, I?m almost out! I felt like pairing an unusual ingredient/flavor to todays smoothie for some morning energy: Green Tea!

If you?re not a fan of drinking green tea plain, you can sneak it into your smoothie to make a healthy energizing breakfast with?countless health benefits:

Weight Loss:?The polyphenol found in green tea increase metabolism by intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories.
Energizing:?Has a stimulating effect from it?s caffeine content.
Anti aging:?Can reduce wrinkles and signs of aging due to it?s rich antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Boosts immunity: T
he antioxidant polyphenol compounds called Catechins?have been shown to boost your immune system.?
Anti Carcinogenic:?
Catechins present in green tea neutralize free radicals to reduce the chances of?cancer.
Reduces Cholesterol:?Reduces bad cholesterol in the blood and improves the ratio of good cholesterol to bad.

Food Photography & Styling | July Assignment BBQ/Grilling ...

It?s our July food photography and styling challenge ? already! ?I can?t believe half the year has already gone by. ?Back in January, I was fortunate to stumble upon a group of ladies that were forming a group with the purpose of improving their food photography and styling skills and it?s been a wonderful journey so far. ?Everybody brings something different to the group which we all learn and benefit from.

This month?s challenge is to style and photograph a BBQ dish (or grilled). ?Did I mention that I don?t even own an outdoor grill? ?Or that I?m not a fan of BBQ in general? ?Now I know how the group participants last month who didn?t like fish felt! ?To not own a grill seems almost unAmerican I guess. ?Sure, we had one, but the Florida salt air finally did it in a few years ago. ?In addition, living in an elevated home means one spends their time running up and down stairs and being separated from family or friends if grilling is underway. ?So??long story short, we just never used it much and subsequently didn?t feel any strong need to purchase a new one. ? I broil and roast. ?I roast and broil. ?No smoke. ?Where there?s smoke, there?s fire. ?I just don?t like smoky tasting food. ?I don?t even want smoked turkey deli meat in a sandwich.

To that end, I did however put a lot of energy into this month?s challenge! ?Some of the California participants in our group were able to meet up and complete this month?s assignment together which sounded and looked like a lot of fun. ?As for me, I decided to work on my ?indoor? grilling skills. ?I really couldn?t decide what to make even as the days dwindled down to our deadline (which is?right now). ?I wasn?t loving the idea of meat?..so I decided upon shrimp, radicchio, and hearts of palm skewers, as well as a dessert component. ?I also made a fresh salsa to go along with the skewers (yum). ?Styling it all, however, was another big component of this challenge. ?I knew I wanted to shoot outside in late day light to give it that ?outside BBQ? feel and look. ?I didn?t, though, want a classic July 4th hamburgers and hot dogs appearance either, because that wasn?t representative of ?the story behind my dishes.

I was looking for upscale casual. ? Sort of like casual Fridays in the office when you get to wear something less conservative but not jeans or shorts? ?Do companies still do that?

Starting off with the salsa??made with mango, pineapple, kiwi fruit, red onion, orange bell pepper, jalape?o, and cilantro. ?I used to?hate dislike cilantro immensely but have somehow come to enjoy it in recent years. ?This salsa is soooo good with a nice spicy kick which you really kind of need when making a fruit-based salsa.

All recipes follow at the end of this post.

Then on to the appetizer ? or small plate dish ? skewers of jumbo shrimp, hearts of palm, and radicchio and lime wedges. ?I love hearts of palm. ?Did you know that hearts of palm come from the?sabel palmetto?or cabbage palm? ?That is Florida?s state tree.

A nice addition to round out this dinner would be a grilled pork tenderloin with rice pilaf.

On to dessert! ?This is Carla Hall?s recipe from The Chew ? and it?s aptly named Grilled Pineapple Upside Down Sandwich. ?Oh yeah, oh yum. ?You can find the recipe HERE. ?The raspberry sauce was my little addition. I also included a pullback of how I took the photo ? it was brilliantly sunny so a diffuser panel was a necessity?.however, the pop-up storm brewing just off camera left ?definitely was NOT a necessity to the shoot.

I shot the dessert first and because of the storm, wasn?t sure if I would be able to shoot the appetizer course or not! ?Luckily the sun came back out just in time for the sunset, and enough light to get my shots. ?It was a beautiful set within a stormy sky.

Please continue on through our blog circle to see what everyone came up with for their BBQ/Grilling dishes this month. ?Next up is ?Allison Jacobs of Allison Jacobs Photography?and I can?t wait to see what she posted!

Printed photonic crystal mirrors shrink on-chip lasers down to size

ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? Electrical engineers at The University of Texas at Arlington and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have devised a new laser for on-chip optical connections that could give computers a huge boost in speed and energy efficiency.

The team published its findings on July 22, 2012 in Nature Photonics.

At just 2 micrometers in height -- smaller than the width of a human hair -- the surface-emitting laser's vastly lower profile could make it cheaper and easier for manufacturers to integrate high-speed optical data connections into the microprocessors powering the next generation of computers.

Traditionally, edge-emitter lasers are considered as the candidate for on-chip optical links. But since mirrors are hard to form in such lasers and because the lasers occupy a large chip area, researchers have been challenged to find a practical way to monolithically integrate the mirrors on silicon chips.

Surface-emitting lasers necessary for a high-speed optical links between computer cores could be 20 to 30 micrometers tall, slightly bigger than one hole in the mesh of a car's oil filter. Yet the research team's engineers say that on a 1.5-micrometer wavelength optically connected chip, lasers of that size dwarf their silicon surroundings.

"It sits tall on the chip, like a tower," says Zhenqiang Ma, a UW-Madison professor of electrical and computer engineering. "That is definitely not acceptable."

Weidong Zhou, a UT Arlington professor of electrical engineering, says one challenge was integrating light into silicon chips, as silicon itself is not an efficient light emitter.

Zhou and Ma have collaborated to shrink on-chip lasers in recent years with funding from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

As a solution, the researchers propose replacing layers and layers of reflectors necessary in the traditional distributed Bragg reflector laser design with two highly reflective photonic crystal mirrors. Composed of compound semiconductor quantum well materials, each mirror is held in place with silicon nanomembranes, extremely thin layers of a silicon.

Zhou says integrating compound semiconductor quantum wells with silicon is a promising approach. "We apply a nanomembrane transfer printing process to accomplish this goal," he says.

One layer of photonic crystal is equal to about 15 to 30 layers of dielectric reflectors found in conventional lasers. As a result, manufacturers could fabricate 2-micrometer-high lasers for data links with performance that could equal current designs.

In addition to their larger size, reflectors for conventional lasers are made of materials grown only at very high temperatures, which means they can damage the chip they are placed upon during production. Since fabrication via transfer printing can occur at much lower temperatures, Zhou and Ma hope their laser design can be used to place optical links on silicon chips with much less wasted material, time and effort.

Optical data links already exist at the largest scales of data networks -- the Internet's backbone is composed mainly of fiber-optic links between countries, cities and houses. But currently, that data moves over to slower metal connections and wiring as it travels from a regional hub to your house, your computer and eventually between the CPU cores within of the processor powering your machine.

"In the future, you'll see a move to optical at each step," Ma says. "The last step is within the chip, module to module optical links on the chip itself."

Through Semerane Inc., the Texas-based startup Zhou and Ma founded, the two hope to implement their production process in functional on-chip photonic crystal membrane lasers that could eventually be part of the next generation high-speed computer processors.

"We believe this laser will be used to make data links more practically available," Ma says.

"It is truly an interdisciplinary team effort," Zhou says. "The co-existence of photonics with electronics on the chip level shall enable multi-functional energy-efficient super-chips for applications in computing, communications, sensing, imaging and so on."

With widespread adoption of processors that use their laser design for optical links, Ma and Zhou could have a hand in increasing the speed along the local leg of the information superhighway.

"Eventually, a CPU core in America could be connected to another CPU core in Asia, with optical connections all along the chain," Ma says.
