(AP) ? Tiger Woods made one last birdie as the rain picked up strength Friday, and what he left behind was a gloomy forecast for everyone else at Torrey Pines.

He had a two-shot lead at the tournament he already has won six times.

He is driving the ball long and straight, just what he needs to handle the par 5s ? he has played them in 9 under so far.

And when it comes to experience, he has a 74-0 advantage in PGA Tour wins against the next seven guys on the leaderboard.

Woods knows better than to chalk up another win in the Farmers Insurance Open, so when asked about his name atop the leaderboard after a 7-under 65 on the North Course, he was quick to point out, "We have a long way to go."

Even so, this had all the trappings of another Tiger show at Torrey Pines.

Woods didn't miss a shot during a four-hole stretch around the turn on the North Course that included a 5-iron to 5 feet for eagle and a wedge that one-hopped off the pin to set up birdie. It carried him to a two-shot lead over Billy Horschel going into the weekend.

Asked whether he played better when everything was going well in his life, Woods waited out the long question with a short answer.

"I feel good right now," said Woods, who was at 11-under 133. "I'm leading the tournament."

Horschel, who had to go back to Q-school to get his card last year, had a 69 on the South Course to get into the final group.

"It's a good day and I'm excited about tomorrow ? I get to play with Tiger," Horschel said. "I found out when I tapped in for par. I realized he was leading and I was in second place. So yeah, looking forward to that."

For Woods, it was his first outright lead going into the weekend against a full field since the Australian Open in 2011 (he finished third at The Lakes), and his first time atop the leaderboard at Torrey Pines since 2008. Then again, he has only played one time at this event since then when he was just starting to change his swing.

And while this looks ominous for everyone else, Woods with a 36-hole lead ? even at Torrey Pines ? doesn't mean this is over. He had a 34-10 record when he has at least a share of the 36-hole lead, though he has failed to win four of the last six times from that spot.

"Vintage (at)TigerWoods today," Dustin Johnson said on Twitter after finishing eight shots behind.

Woods caught a break in the draw by playing the easier North ? it's about 600 yards shorter ? on a day of light rain, a late breeze and soft conditions. But he kept the ball in play off the tee, and he only got in trouble once. That was on the par-4 eighth hole when he drove into a tough lie in the bunker, and it led to his only bogey.

There's a simple formula for playing the North ? make birdie on the par 5s and pick up a few more on the short par 4s. And that's just what he did.

Woods missed birdie putts inside 8 feet on the opening two holes and was taking baby steps until he took off. It started with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th. He followed with the 5-iron that landed just left of the pin on the 18th, a two-putt birdie on the par-5 first hole, and his wedge that took one hop, struck the flag and settled 4 feet away.

"Drive the ball well here and you're going to probably have four iron shots into the par 5s," Woods said. "You sprinkle that in with probably four or five wedge shots in there, a round of 6- or 7-under par is definitely conceivable."

Brad Fritsch, a rookie from Canada, had a 67 on the South Course to lead the group of six players at 8-under 136. The others were Casey Wittenberg, Steve Marino, Jimmy Walker, Josh Teater and Erik Compton, whom Woods referred to as "remarkable" for being a two-time heart transplant recipient and being on the PGA Tour.

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker didn't fare so well. After opening with a 65 on the North, he made only one birdie and twice took bogey on the par 5s on his way to a 75 that left him seven shots behind. K.J. Choi, who had a 65 on the South Course, couldn't break par on the easier North and had a 73 to fall five behind.

Phil Mickelson struggled to keep his hands dry in the wet weather and finished bogey-bogey on the South for a 71 to make the cut on the number, though his work isn't over. There were 87 players who made the cut at 1-under 143, meaning there will be another cut to top 70 and ties Saturday.

Mike Weir, meanwhile, made the cut for the first time since July 2011 despite a sloppy finish for a 75 on the South. He was tied for 41st at 3-under 141.

Woods is coming off a missed cut in Abu Dhabi last week to start his year.

"I've had beautiful practice sessions at home," he said. "If I can do it there, I can do it out here. Even though last week I played only two days, I felt like I hit the ball well enough to shoot a better score than I did. I had a couple of days to work on it, and I came out here and felt pretty good about it."

The final two rounds move to the South Course, which played about 1? shots harder Friday in the rain. The greens are more receptive, sure, but the course figures to play at full length in wet conditions and at sea level.

"It was amazing how different it played from Wednesday," Walker said. "I played the pro-am here on Wednesday on the South, and you could hardly stop a ball. And today, it didn't matter if you hit a 3-iron in there, it would just stop immediately. You could spin wedges. So it was a lot different, and it played a lot longer too."

Not only have the seven players behind Woods not won on tour, four of them had to get cards this year through either Q-school or the Web.com Tour.

But with 36 holes left, more than just those seven are still in the mix. Nick Watney played the first two rounds with Woods was only four shots behind, along with Ross Fisher of England. Charles Howell III, who has tied for third and lost in a playoff in his two starts this year, had a 72 on the South and was five shots behind.

Horschel wades into a big world Saturday, but he believes he has the experience from when he played the Walker Cup in 2007 at Royal County Down.

There was a guy I competed against three times called Rory McIlroy," Horschel said. "So there may have been 10, 12,000 people following us, and only a couple thousand following the rest of the groups. So I've dealt with crowds. I guess it's a little bit easier playing with Tiger because I guess the group ahead, they move a lot or something. Just hearing what media says. It's going to be exciting."

Oregon promotes OC Helfrich to coach

Mark Helfrich is Oregon's next man in.

As usual, the Ducks wasted little time finding a replacement for Chip Kelly, promoting their affable offensive coordinator to head coach Sunday. Kelly left to become coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday.

Helfrich is the third straight offensive coordinator at Oregon to be promoted to the top job, following Kelly and his predecessor, Mike Bellotti.

The 39-year-old Oregon native signed a five-year deal with the Ducks for a reported $9 million. His promotion does not come as a surprise: Even before Oregon defeated Kanas State in the Fiesta Bowl, the Ducks' quarterbacks guru was considered the front-runner as Kelly's successor.

"Going forward we will attack in all phases. We'll embrace innovation and we'll strive to do our best to win each and every day," Helfrich said at a news conference Sunday afternoon where he was supported by players including quarterback Marcus Mariota and running back De'Anthony Thomas.

Helfrich, who embodies Oregon's "Next Man In" philosophy of substitution without skipping a beat, became offensive coordinator of the Ducks when Kelly took over four seasons ago. The Ducks have appeared in BCS bowls each of those four years, including an appearance in the national championship game against Auburn in 2011.

The Ducks, ranked No. 2 in the final AP Top 25, finished 12-1 this season.

"Win The Day and all that ? that doesn't change for us," Mariota said.

Kelly, credited with creating Oregon's innovative hurry-up spread offense, went 46-7 as head coach at Oregon. It had been widely expected that he would jump to the NFL, leaving many surprised when he announced he was staying at Oregon after interviewing with Philadelphia, Cleveland and Buffalo following the Fiesta Bowl. Nine days later, however, he changed his mind and decided to go to the Eagles.

Just hours after Kelly's departure was announced, Oregon posted a job for a new head coach on its website. Under state law, Oregon was required to interview at least one qualified minority candidate for the job.

Former Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton acknowledged Saturday that he interviewed with Oregon before he was hired by the Indianapolis Colts' to be their offensive coordinator.

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said Oregon had already started the process of finding a replacement for Kelly following the Fiesta Bowl. He said it was important to name a successor quickly, because letter of intent signing day for high school recruits is on Feb. 6.

Mullens said interest from an "impressive list of coaches for the job." In the end, he interviewed five candidates in person.

"We went through the process because we felt it was important to do our due diligence and we kept coming back to Mark," Mullens said on Sunday.

Before joining the Ducks, Helfrich was quarterbacks coach at Colorado from 2006-08. As Oregon's offensive coordinator, he also has been in charge of Oregon's quarterbacks, guiding both Darron Thomas and Mariota, a redshirt freshman.

This season Mariota set the team's single-season record with 38 touchdowns (32 passing, 5 rushing, 1 receiving), surpassing the previous mark of 36 held by Thomas (2011) and Akili Smith (1998).

The first freshman named to the Pac-12's all-conference first team in 23 years, Mariota passed for 2,739 yards, completing a school-record 68.5 percent of his passes. He had 3,429 yards of total offense, second only to Smith's 3,947 in 1998.

Thomas, his predecessor, passed for 2,761 yards and a school-record 33 passing touchdowns his junior season last season despite missing a game because of an injury. He left school with a year of eligibility remaining in hopes of playing in the NFL but went undrafted.

There are not expected to be any major changes under Helfrich. But he hinted he may allow reporters and boosters greater access to practice ? something that Kelly had shut down this season ? and he joked about a few other tweaks.

"I won't wear a visor, I'll eat more vegetables," he said.

Helfrich will also face possible fallout from an NCAA investigation into the school's use of recruiting services.

The inquiry is the result of reports that surfaced in 2011 concerning payments Oregon made to two such services, including a $25,000 check sent to Willie Lyles and Houston-based Complete Scouting Services in 2010. Lyles had a connection with a player who committed to Oregon.

Oregon had requested a summary disposition in the case and presented a report to the NCAA infractions committee outlining violations the school believed occurred and appropriate sanctions. But last month Yahoo Sports reported that Oregon is headed toward a hearing with the committee because the two sides couldn't reach an agreement.

The NCAA does not comment on ongoing investigations. The hearing could come as early as this spring.

Sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the it had not been announced said Sunday that Oregon promoted wide receivers coach Scott Frost, the former Nebraska quarterback, to replace Helfrich as offensive coordinator.

Frost, 38, came to Oregon in 2009 after serving as an assistant at Northern Iowa. He played seven seasons in the NFL after leading the Huskers to the national title over Tennessee in the 1997 Orange Bowl.

Is 'DWTS' pro headed back to 'General Hospital'?

By Jolie Lash , Access Hollywood

?Dancing with the Stars? pro Val Chmerkovskiy could be heading back to Port Charles.

?General Hospital? Executive Producer Frank Valentini confirmed to AccessHollywood.com they are looking to get the ballroom hunk back on the ABC soap.?

Rick Rowell / ABC

Val Chmerkovskiy made an appearance on "General Hospital" in 2012 with Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays Alexis.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Dancing?s Val Chmerkovskiy?

?Yes, we would love to bring Val back,? Valentini told Access at the ABC post-Television Critics Association Winter Session 2013 bash in Pasadena, Calif., last week. ?It?s a little trickier because of scheduling, but if we can bring back Val, you may see him do a little dance with Kelly Monaco.??

Val previously appeared on the soap alongside Kelly?s on-screen mom, Alexis, played by Emmy winner Nancy Lee Grahn.?

VIEW THE PHOTOS: General Hospital Beauty Kelly Monaco?

This time around ? if the scheduling works ? the ?DWTS? pro will appear at the Nurses? Ball, the function spectacle-wearing nurse Sabrina Santiago (Teresa Castillo) is working hard to revive.?

?Yep,? Valentini confirmed of the proposed storyline. ?We?re crossing our fingers. That one is totally based on schedule. We love Val, he loves us, he had a lot of fun [last time on the show] working with Nancy.??

?Why not have Kelly and Val dance at the Nurses? Ball,? actress Lisa Lo Cicero, who plays the newly-psychic Olivia Falconeri, told Access, when we ran into her at the ABC party.?

VIEW THE PHOTOS: General Hospital: Cast Photos & More?

Lisa said Val was on set when she filmed one of her more dramatic moments of Fall 2012 ? when Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) threw Olivia down the stairs.?

?What a doll,? Lisa said of the ?DWTS? hunk. ?He was there watching the day that I did the stunt where I got thrown down the stairs. It made us all nervous because we didn?t want to look like douches in front of Val. ... He?s pretty cool.??

VIEW THE PHOTOS: The Shirtless & Nearly Shirtless Pros Of ?Dancing With The Stars??

Beyond the potential Nurses? Ball dance with Kelly Monaco?s character, Sam McCall, the EP is open to having Val return as an occasional guest star.?

?Totally. He?s got charisma to spare,? he said.?

While it?s unlikely Val?s character will mend Sam?s broken heart, Valentini said some joy is on the way for Kelly?s character, who is in mourning for her husband, Jason Morgan (Steven Burton), who is presumed dead on the show.?

?She?s had a lot of misery and I think now she?s going to have some fun. She?s gonna have a little bit of fun,? he said.?

Kelly?s Sam has been looking after Michael Easton?s John McBain, who was stabbed with a wooden stake by Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) who mistook him for his former role ? Caleb ? a vampire on the canceled ?GH? spinoff, ?Port Charles.? And, addressing Kelly and John?s on screen chemistry, Valentini said, ?It?s ridiculous. We have to tell them to hold back in the studio!??

?General Hospital? airs weekdays on ABC.?

MGM Mulling Hot Tub Time Machine Sequel

Anyone fancy another dip in the hot tub?

MGM is in early talks to draw up plans for a sequel to its 2010 comedy Hot Tub Time Machine.

The company is in what insiders characterize as ?exploratory talks? with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke to reprise their roles for the follow-up.

Corddry could end up being involved in fashioning a script with Steve Pink, the director of the original who is in talks to return to direct the sequel.??

John Cusack, who also starred in the original, is not involved at this point.

The pieces have slowly been coming together for the past several months and sources caution that deal-making is in an early stage and could fail. However, insiders also say that if a deal makes, production would be fast-tracked.

HHTM was the last movie produced under Mary Parent?s run at MGM, before the company went into bankruptcy. The $36 million movie grossed around $50 million at the box office but proved to be a massive home entertainment hit.

The movie centered on four men, bored and unhappy with their lives, who travel back in time via a hot tub to a fateful night of their teenaged years in the 1980s. The movie, which also starred Chevy Chase, was a love letter to '80s teen comedies but seen through a modern -- somewhat coarse -- lens.

Corddry, repped by WME and Principato-Young, has seen his stock rise since HTTM. The actor won an Emmy for his work on Children?s Hospital, a show he created for Cartoon Network?s Adult Swim block. He also has six movies in the can or in post due for release this year, including Summit?s Warm Bodies and Paramount?s Pain & Gain.

Robinson, one of the stars of The Office, appears later this year in the Tyler Perry-produced We the Peeples and This is the End, a comedy with Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel. He is repped by UTA and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Duke did a stint on The Office and will be seen in Identity Thief with Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. He is repped by WME and Mosaic.

Pink, repped by UTA and Mosaic, recently wrapped Screen Gem?s remake of About Last Night starring Kevin Hart and Paula Patton. The movie is set for a Feb. 14, 2014 release.

(AP) ? Tom Brady made history. Now it's his coach's turn.

The Patriots' quarterback added to a string of postseason success that stretches back more than a decade, earning his 17th playoff win to break a tie with his boyhood idol, Joe Montana, for most by a quarterback.

After New England's 41-28 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday night, Bill Belichick needs two more playoff wins to match Tom Landry's NFL high of 20. If Belichick gets there this season he'd also tie Chuck Noll for most Super Bowl championships by a coach with four.

First, the Baltimore Ravens stand in the way next Sunday in a rematch of last year's AFC title game.

"Right now our focus is just (being) happy to win this game and get on to Baltimore," Belichick said. "We can reflect back on some other years some other time."

Sunday was Brady's day to reach a milestone. His first postseason win came in the 2001 season, which ended with his first Super Bowl title. Now he's guiding the NFL's most productive offense into his sixth AFC championship game in his 13 seasons.

"He's our leader and we all follow him," said Belichick, the team's real leader. "We all respect him and he led the team today, along with a lot of other guys. But he certainly did his job, as he's done many times before."

It won't take Belichick long to put Sunday's victory out of his mind, impressive as it was. Brady also is ready to move on to the next challenge.

"I think the two best teams are in the finals," he said. "Baltimore certainly deserves to be here and so do we, so it's fitting."

The Texans (13-5) certainly don't after losing four of their last six games, starting with a 42-14 rout by the Patriots (13-4) on Dec. 10 on the same field where their season ended.

"There's no good landing in this business unless you're playing a few weeks from now," Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. "Other than that, the landing's a crash."

Brady threw for three scores and 344 yards and seldom-used running back Shane Vereen, seeing more action because Danny Woodhead hurt his thumb on the Patriots' first offensive play, had three touchdowns. Wes Welker had eight catches for a career postseason-high 131 yards and the defense held Arian Foster to 90 yards rushing, his first sub-100-yard playoff game in the four he's had.

The Patriots also overcame the loss of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who broke the left arm he originally broke on Nov. 18 in a 59-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts and needs season-ending surgery, a person with knowledge of the injury told The Associated Press.

"It's a bummer to lose anybody," Brady said, "but someone of Rob's importance or Danny's importance, we need guys to step in and fill the void, whether it's this game or any game after."

Gronkowski missed the first game against the Texans, one of five he sat out after his first injury, and it didn't matter.

The Texans were more competitive on Sunday and trailed only 17-13 at halftime as Foster scored on a 1-yard run and Shayne Graham kicked a 55-yard field goal in the last 1:11 before intermission.

But the Patriots scored on two of their first three series in the third quarter on Stevan Ridley's 8-yard run and Brady's 5-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd that made it 31-13.

"We came out in the second half and didn't perform," NFL sacks leader J.J. Watt said. "Losing. I can't stand it. I can't stand any aspect of it. The taste in your mouth is terrible."

Lloyd scored just six plays after Rob Ninkovich ended a Houston threat with an interception that gave New England the ball at its 37-yard line.

The Patriots needed just one play after taking over on downs early in the fourth quarter, scoring on an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch by Vereen for a 33-yard touchdown and a 38-13 advantage.

The third-string back finished with 124 total yards ? 83 on five receptions and 41 on seven carries.

"I don't come into the game knowing how much anyone is going to play," Vereen said. "I come into the game ready to go."

The Texans were.

On the very first play, Danieal Manning returned the kickoff 94 yards before being hauled down by Devin McCourty at the Patriots 12. But all the Texans could get out of that was a 27-yard field goal by Shayne Graham.

"That was a huge play by Devin to really end up saving (four) points," Belichick said.

The Patriots punted on their first two series then took the lead for good on Vereen's 1-yard run following Brady's consecutive completions of 13 yards to Ridley, 25 to Vereen and 14 to Aaron Hernandez.

The Texans offense got going again in the fourth quarter, but it was too late. Matt Schaub's touchdown passes of 25 yards to DeVier Posey and 1 yard to Foster in the last 12 minutes just made the margin of defeat closer.

"It's difficult to sit here (with) the realization that our season is over," Schaub said.

The Patriots' season continues against a team it beat in last year's AFC title game 23-20, but lost to in Week 3 this season 31-30 after leading 30-21 with less than 5 minutes left.

The Ravens advanced with a 38-35 double-overtime win in Denver and will be on the road again, trying to keep Belichick from tying Don Shula with 19 postseason victories. A win would be the 18th for Brady and Belichick together since the Patriots drafted the quarterback in 2000. It also would put him two up on Montana.

"I grew up a 49ers fan," Brady said. "Joe Montana and Steve Young ... those guys are in another class.

"I love playing, I love competing, I love being a part of this organization," he said. "I think I've just been fortunate to play on some great teams over the years. I never take it for granted."

NOTES: The Patriots are 14-3 at home in the playoffs, but just 3-2 in their last five games. ... The Texans were eliminated in their second playoff game for the second straight year after going their first nine seasons without a postseason appearance. ... Schaub threw for 343 yards, one less than Brady. ... Defensive backs Aqib Talib and Steve Gregory led the Patriots with 10 tackles each.

Lodging, M-F See Marked Increase in Construction Spending from ...

January 8, 2013

By Mike Ratliff, Senior Associate Editor

Creative Commons, Flickr user JD Hancock

Construction spending figures released by the Census Bureau last Wednesday show that November spending for nonresidential building ($564.1 billion) is up 2.9 percent compared to November 2011 ($548.2 billion). This increase may not be as exciting as the 18 percent increase demonstrated by residential construction, but hidden in the figure are certain commercial sectors that are experiencing something of a mini-boom.

Lodging certainly appears to be making some waves with $11.5 billion in construction spending in November 2012, a 21.9 percent increase over the $9.4 billion spent in November 2011. This is the result of a two part phenomena, according to Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America.

Ken Simonson, Chief Economist at AGC

?First off, you have had a lot of investors buying up distressed hotel properties in the last two to three years. Presumably they want to restore them to a condition where they are competitive again, so you are getting a lot of renovation work,? Simonson said, adding that the lodging sector has displayed strong year over year change in RevPAR, putting the owners in a strong position to afford renovation and expansion efforts.

The second factor impacting construction spending on lodging is domestic drilling, which has created population surges in certain isolated areas. North Dakota is awash in oil, the Eagle Ford Shale formation in south and east Texas is now one of the most actively drilled targets in the US, and the Marcellus Shale formation has created a natural gas boom in southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia?which now produce about 25 percent of all shale gas in the US. This creates a big demand for limited service and extended stay hotels.

Multi-family (no surprise here) also saw a tremendous increase (46 percent) in year-over-year construction spending for the month of November in 2012 versus 2011. Job growth, tighter standards for landing a home mortgage and a changing attitude on the desirability of living in a single-family home in the suburbs all contribute to the health of the apartment sector, according to Simonson.

?Traditional market rate apartment construction has been really hot since early 2011, and based on the number of permits and housing starts that the Census has reported, I think that this trend is going to continue at least through 2013,? Simonson said.

Other sectors like office?up 2.8 percent compared to November 2011?and commercial (defined by the Census as retail, warehouse and farming construction) up 5.7 percent, are seeing a growth in construction spending that is mainly due to renovation rather than breaking ground. According to Simonson most of the retail spending is involved in the reworking of old malls and perhaps big box chains trying out smaller footprint stores in a space vacated by a competitor. Even though office spending was up, the sector still has a long way to go.

?I was on a program last June with a national commercial real estate leasing firm, and they said that their clients are asking for 30 percent less space than they were five years ago,? he said. ?Even if employment keeps rising?which I think it will?we are a long way from needing as much office space as has been built. This suggests that the market for new office construction will remain weak. Of course there will always be certain exceptions, in this case the Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Seattle as well as Washington and New York, which while they will see new construction, it will be nothing like what was going on in the 2005 to 2007 period.?

(AP) ? Syrian refugees in a Jordanian camp attacked aid workers with sticks and stones on Tuesday, frustrated after cold, howling winds swept away their tents and torrential rains flooded muddy streets.

Police said seven Jordanian aid workers were injured when they were attacked by dozens of refugees while distributing bread for breakfast.

The refugees may be about to face even deeper misery with warnings of a major snowstorm on Wednesday.

"It is hell ? boiling hot in the summer and freezing cold now," lamented Ahmed Zibi, 45, who said he spent the night watching over his five children when his tent collapsed. "Rain flooded the tent and its shafts submerged and collapsed on us."

The riot broke out after the region's first major winter storm this year hit the Zaatari refugee camp, home to nearly 50,000 refugees, at least half under the age of 18, in Jordan's northern desert.

Inside the camp, large puddles surrounded tents, stranding pregnant women and infants. Some refugees scurried to evacuate their flooded tents or used small buckets to bail out the water, while others made walls of mud to try to keep the water out. Women, children and the elderly took cover in other tents.

Ghazi Sarhan, spokesman for the Jordan Hashemite Charitable Organization, said frustration over the harsh conditions triggered the riot. The charity runs the camp along with the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR.

Calls from loudspeakers echoed across the camp urging protesters to evacuate muddy streets.

UNHCR says 597,240 refugees have registered or are awaiting registration with the agency in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Some countries have higher estimates, noting many have found accommodation without registering.

The World Food Program also said Tuesday it is unable to help 1 million Syrians who are going hungry inside Syria.

WFP spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said the agency plans to provide aid to 1.5 million of the 2.5 million Syrians that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent says are internally displaced. But the lack of security and the agency's inability to use the Syrian port of Tartous for its shipment means that a large number of people in the some of the country's hardest hit areas will not get help, she said.

"Our main partner, the Red Crescent, is overstretched and has no more capacity to expand further," Byrs said.

Rain was intermittent and the wind had subsided by Tuesday. But the weather service warned a large snowstorm could hit Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and parts of Iraq on Wednesday. Private and public schools throughout Lebanon were closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Temperatures dipped below freezing overnight and were expected to be similar late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Winds gusted up to about (60 kph) 35 mph overnight.

Fadi Suleiman, 30, said Zaatari camp conditions were "worse than living in Syria," where rebels are fighting a civil war against authoritarian ruler Bashar Assad that has killed some 60,000 in nearly two years of fighting.

"It's one misery after the other as the international community sits idle, doing nothing to help us get rid of the tyrant Assad," he said. "But this one is dangerous: There's a serious storm that could kill children and old people."

The U.N. has registered 128,628 refugees in Jordan, but the Jordanian government says more than 280,000 Syrians have fled to the country since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011.

Zaatari has been the site of several previous violent refugee protests over harsh living conditions. At least 100 Jordanian policemen have been wounded in the riots, according to a Jordanian policeman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information.

The stormy weather also added to the plight of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, where torrential rains and flooding have been wreaking havoc throughout the country.

In the eastern Lebanese town of Marj near the border with Syria, refugees were working on reinforcing their tents after they were flooded, and some blown away by torrential rains and high winds.

The small terrain housing about 40 tents donated by a Saudi charity organization and set up in cooperation with UNHCR houses mostly women and children.

"You tell me, is this a life?" cried Ghalia, who fled with her son to Lebanon after her husband died in shelling of the Damascus neighborhood of Qaboun last year. "We've been driven away from Syria by the war and we cannot afford rent prices in Lebanon. We have nothing but the clothes we brought with us to this tent and now look at us."

?Imad al-Shummari, head of the al-Marj municipality, said authorities were helping the refugees reinforce their tents, providing alternative shelter and distributing heaters and extra blankets.

Lebanon has around 175,000 Syrian refugees according to U.N. figures, 200,000 according to government estimates. Most are staying in schools and apartments but a few are staying in tents they pitched near the border with Syria.

In Turkey, the weather was cold with slight rain, but no snow.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, which oversees the Syrian refugee camps, said authorities have been preparing for winter conditions since August. An official from the unit in charge of the preparations said all refugees were given winter boots, warm clothing, coats and blankets in November.

"Almost all of the tents" were either revamped and made winter proof or replaced with new ones able to withstand winter conditions, he said. All of the tents have heaters, according to the official who also spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with the government rules.

Mohammed al-Abed, a 30-year-old Syrian refugee in Turkey's Yayladagi camp said the tents were equipped with heaters, but the bathrooms and lavatories were about 300-500 meters (yards) away.

"There is no hot water. People are getting sick especially the children," he said.

"It's a miserable situation, but I am ashamed to complain because we're much better off than our brothers trapped in Syria," he said, citing the Atmeh tent camp on the Syrian side of the border. "At least we are better equipped with some heaters and blankets. They have nothing, no heating, no electricity. Nothing."
