Diane Alter writes: Some of the most lucrative opportunities you can find now are in the biotechnology industry ? which is why we've been working to uncover the best ways for how to invest in this sector.

The best biotech companies overflow with innovation. They can offer a steady stream of game-changing products ? which often translates to record-breaking revenue.

The biotech industry is also known for its stiff competition. The race to be a consumer favorite causes companies to take big risks.

Sometimes, these lead to embarrassing flops, but when they get it right, the payoffs are huge.

That's a big reason why funding, often difficult to secure, is getting easier.

Greg Simon, CEO of Poliwogg, a firm that hunts for investable innovative drug makers, says "crowd funding" by private ventures, legalized by Congress last year, is spreading the risk among cautious yet interested investors.

"There is not a riskier business than health," Simon said at the Milken Institutes Global Conference in Los Angeles in late April. "This is going to democratize the flow of capital into companies."

Other experts in the field remain bullish ?even as the industry has already logged huge gains.

Indeed, biotech stocks are up about 62% over the last two years. Propelled by new drug debuts, research advances and a full pipeline, a long stretch of rewarding breakthrough products should continue to flow in the years ahead.

Rajiv Kaul, manager of the $5.3 billion Fidelity Select Biotechnology Fund said at the Los Angeles event, "Despite the challenges, this is the best time for biotech ever."

Jodi Black, program director at the National Institutes of Health shared that sentiment, "The scientific potential has never been greater. Now is not the time to retrench."

The sector has enjoyed vigorous merger and acquisition activity over the last couple years, a trend that's expected to continue. Also expected is a significant pick-up in licensing activities and collaborations.

Higher demand for medicines, government initiatives for healthcare, new patient population and increasing use of generics will also drive the industry.

Another reason why now's the time to know how to invest in biotech: We are heading into what Kaul calls a golden age for the industry.

According to the IMS Institute, the branded medicine market is expected to rise from $596 billion in 2011 to some $645 billion by 2016. The introduction of medicines and procedures targeting unmet needs and soaring patient access from Obamacare will also boost industry growth.

"Investors who take a long-term view get rewarded because great things could still be ahead of us," Kaul shared in a recent Barron's interview.

However, the recent surge has created a conundrum for investors thanks to skyrocketing stock prices and high multiples in the diverse sector.

Moreover, there is the high rate of failure. The majority of experimental drugs in clinic stages never make it to market. Plus, drugs already approved face pricing pressure and must remain innovative.

So, investors need to tread carefully.

How to Invest in Biotech Now

Money Morning's Tech Specialist Michael A. Robinson has found the Holy Grail in this profitable and promising industry.

"It has actual double your money potential. In fact, you'll be stunned at just how quickly every $1 you invest will turn into $2 in holdings," Robinson explained.

The ETF is the iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index (Nasdaq: IBB).

Roughly 58% of its funds are invested in biotech behemoths like Gilead Sciences Inc. (Nasdaq; GILD), Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (Nasdaq: REGN), Amgen Inc. (Nasdaq: AMGN), Celgene Corp. (Nasdaq: CELG) and Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ALXN).

It also invests in a number of "stealth small caps."

Some 70-80 new companies are created every year with opportunistic new treatments. This steady channel of invention underscores a cache of investment opportunity for the future.

"The IBB is exactly the type of strategic play every tech investor should make. It's both the easiest and lowest-risk way I know of to put a broad swath of market leaders and perennial winners in your hands ... immediately," Robinson says.

Anouska Stahlmann: Best Scenes and Lines of ALL Time

Hello all! I'm now 15-years-old and I've realized I spend all my time watching films. I watch a lot of films and I suppose you could say I am quite good at movie trivia. What I find shocking is how many films aren't well-known when they're beyond amazing. There are some scenes that break your heart. There are some scenes that grip you and have you on the edge of your seat. There are those scenes that make your heart melt. There are those scenes that make you feel, cry, laugh and "aww." I've collected a list of 10 scenes. I've narrowed down all the scenes that have evoked so much emotion that I didn't know how to feel after watching the scene. This is my list of 10 scenes that are extra special and have that wow factor. These scenes are the ones that stared me down when I was scouring the earth for the scenes and screamed "I AM FABULOUS" or "I am the walrus" in number 8's case...

10. Schindler's List is directed by Steven Spielberg and is a film to inform audiences of the tragedy of the Holocaust but also the work of the heroic Oskar Schindler. The amazing Liam Neeson took the bull by the horns and managed to break the hearts of everyone in this epic work of art that is Schindler's list. The final scene of the actual film depicts a heartbroken Oskar breaking down over the fact that saving 1,200 Jews just wasn't enough. This is the second to last scene in the whole film but this is the last scene in the main action sequence. This black and white film sets the scene, but also sets us up for Oskar watching the Nazis drive the Jewish people out of the Ghetto and put them on their way to Auschwitz concentration camp and shows him following the girl in a little red outfit. She later appears being carried out of Auschwitz and I could feel my heartbreak as you fell in love with this little girl as she became the inspiration to Schindler to get as many out as possible and save them from the horrific fate they didn't have to face.

Overall, the last scene of the action was the one that made me cry as Liam Neeson portrayed a perfect breakdown, if possible, and drew me in as if I was him. Having been on the emotional rollercoaster that is Schindler's List, I highly recommend that everyone watches it as it truly does draw you in. This important film is huge and is a reminder of the tragedy suffered. It reminds us of the First World War saying, "Lest We Forget."

9. She's Having a Baby is directed by one of my favorite directors, John Hughes. Being THE director of the '80s, he created the Brat Pack and branded himself king of Teen and Coming of Age films. The romantic films he did were perfect and I bow down to him as a director because he really did capture everyone's hearts in his best moments.

This romantic comedy follows the life and marriage of Jake and Kristy Briggs, played by Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern. Jake narrates the film and it follows his life more so than Kristy's. With twists and turns, Kristy becomes pregnant. But with her labor looming, Jake is panicking and doing everything you can think of wrong but it's very funny. Until complications arise that the couple are unaware of and Jake's world is turned upside down as he is whipped from the room, his wife rushed into an emergency C-section and he doesn't even know what has hit him. "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush begins to play and Jake remembers the times that made everything worthwhile with Kristy through all the difficult times. We watch as the tears begin to fall and he smiles as he remembers the good things as he worries about his baby and wife. This scene was heartbreaking to watch in so many ways that it's hard to describe. Imagine what it would be like to not know whether your unborn baby is going to be brought into this world alive or if your beloved wife will make it through the surgery and wake up on the other side. Exactly. You can't even begin to imagine all the pain and emotion that would be swirling round your mind.

8. Across the Universe was written around the Beatles fabulous music. Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson and Evan Rachel Wood star in this romantic drama musical type of thing. Jim Sturgess plays Jude ("Hey Jude") from Liverpool who travels to America to find his father. In the process he meets Max ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer"), Joe Anderson, who offers to house him. After meeting Max's sister, Lucy ("Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"), Evan Rachel Wood, the boys go to New York to make a life for themselves after Max drops out of college. Lucy's boyfriend, Daniel, is fighting in the Vietnam War and due to come home. Unfortunately he is killed in action and Lucy begins to fall apart. In the 1967 Detroit Riot, Jojo's ("Get Back") little brother is killed. Before his death, he is shown singing "Let It Be." The funerals for Daniel and Jojo's brother are shown as the gospel choir at Jojo's brother's funeral continue "Let It Be" and your heart breaks because you feel connected with this little boy. I didn't feel a connection with Daniel. My heart bled for Lucy and Daniel's mother but I didn't feel anything for Daniel and I felt his death was insignificant. The little brother's death was heartbreaking for me because he was just a boy. The fact that in the Detroit Riot, children probably did die just kills me. This scene just connects you to the action and shows Jojo's background. It's so sad!

7. The Breakfast Club is, once again, a John Hughes film. Starring the Brat Pack, the story line follows five teenagers who have all been given detention. There is the "princess," Claire, who is played by the beautiful Molly Ringwald. Then you have the "athlete," Andrew (Emilio Estevez), the "brain," Brian (Anthony Michael Hall), the "basket case," Allison (Ally Sheedy), and the "criminal", John Bender (Judd Nelson). The reasons they've been put in detention is revealed and they become true friends. The choice of admitting their friendship or leaving it is one they face when they get stoned, thanks to the help of Bender. The hilarious dancing and the brutal honesty that happens in this friendship that is formed in a day shows the way teenage friendships are built. But the social cliques of teenage life get in the way. The triumphant end is accompanied by the letter the group write, signing it The Breakfast Club and giving themselves those titles, and the song "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds. The last shot was of Bender. It was just so perfect. This whole film radiates John Hughes' unique sense of film and knack for creating those memorable scenes. This film is a fitting epitaph for him.

6. King Kong was directed by Peter Jackson and released in 2005. This remake has one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. The film begins and there is a lot going on all at once. Eventually, Ann, Naomi Watts, is on a prehistoric kind of island with a huge gorilla. The ins and outs are complex but with the man she loves desperate to get her back and her itching to get back to him, she has to escape from Kong, Andy Serkis, who seemed to be a very murderous gorilla. After spending a while with him, they have their ups and downs but he killed a T-Rex for her. YES, AS IN ONE OF THOSE HUGE MASSIVE MURDEROUS CARNIVORES THAT KILL EVERYTHING. He killed a T-Rex for her. That scene is pretty fly but it's not THE scene. The scene happens when King Kong arrives in New York. He's escaped and is roaming round New York with Naomi Watts in hand. Kong takes her to a frozen Central Park and they slide around on the ice together. This scene doesn't sound like much but it's the scene that made the film. I honestly love the scene so much. It just does it for me. Truly beautiful.

5. Surprisingly the only Tim Burton film on here, Edward Scissorhands makes it into my top five with a very beautiful scene. This scene is touching. Watching this about six years on and this film and scene has not lost the magic it always had. Johnny Depp is a fantastic actor. Put that with Tim Burton's amazing directing, Diane Wiest's kind face and Danny Elfman's stunning score, no wonder this film is breathtaking. Winona Ryder played the supporting role and love interest, Kim. I thought Kim was alright in the end but, however much I disliked what she did, she had to be with Edward because she needed dependable rather than crazy psycho. This scene has Edward carving an ice sculpture of Kim as an angel. The shedding ice falls like snow and enchants Kim who almost dances in it. Her blissful smile completes this scene as she gracefully moves through the ice flakes. It's just so stunning. Danny Elfman composed a beautiful song, Ice Dance, which fitted this scene so perfectly and made it magic.

4. Pretty in Pink is the third John Hughes film to hit my list. He seems to convey teenage angst better than teenagers can. This was the beginning for me. This was my beginning into the Brat Pack. She's Having a Baby was the first film I ever watched by John Hughes but this film is so different. This film sums up so much. Starring Molly Ringwald, the goddess of the Brat Pack, Jon Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, this film is perfect.

This film sums up high school with all the cliques and the places and everything so well. Jon Cryers' character Duckie has always been my favorite character in this film and it always will be. This film has the ability to make you laugh, cry and "aww" all at the same time. My favorite all-time dance sequence is the Duckie Dance. Duckie dances to "Try a Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding. The passion he puts into it kills me every time. I am genuinely wheezing every time. It's just too funny for me to handle.

3. Billy Elliot was released in 2000 and is a hit musical on Broadway and West End. The film is not a musical though. This film is about Billy's struggle with trying to accept his ballet passion but also his struggle for acceptance in 1980s London with a very macho father who is, to say the least, extremely disapproving. Including tracks from T. Rex and The Clash, this film is a smash hit. Following Billy's conflict within and struggle for acceptance, you begin to see the hardships for his father and Billy's best friend emerge. The final scene entails a grown up Billy, getting ready to dance the lead in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. Flicking from Billy to his proud dad and then to the best friend. Adam Cooper's final leap at the end was stunning. It was, by far, better than any stag leap I could ever do! This scene is truly inspiring.

2. Breakfast at Tiffany's stars Audrey Hepburn as the eccentric, upbeat and quirky socialite, Holly Golightly. George Peppard stars alongside Audrey as the reserved writer, Paul Varjak, who is better known as Fred. Through this film we watch Holly and Paul's friendship strain due to whatever Holly has done. She has her plans and he has his but this unlikely duo begin to fall madly and deeply in love. Holly just refuses to acknowledge it because it doesn't fit with her plan. Holly finally breaks and as she builds her life up again, it seems to flop. Poor Holly! So, Paul and Holly quarrel and finally they have the most romantic kiss in the history of film kisses. The kiss that began it all! The kiss that made every female want a KISS IN THE RAIN! It's basically a fantasy and Breakfast at Tiffany's began it all!

1. Say Anything is top of my tip top fabby list! John Hughes, god of teenage films, tops my list. In this one film, he managed to raise so many emotions in each scene, create some of the most memorable moments in film, create photobombing and create the most famous scene ever.

Say Anything is set around the summer after graduation. John Cusack and Ione Skye star as the young new couple, Lloyd and Diane. This film focuses on them and the trials they face. Diane is the valedictorian and is going to study in England at the end of the summer. Lloyd is an average student and not in her league at all. Say Anything offers the best scene of all time. John Hughes' build up to this scene is gigantic. With our favorite couple going through troubling times, our unconventional hero of the film, Lloyd, is found standing outside Diane's window with a boombox playing their song, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. This sweet song mixed with Lloyd's boombox, mac and car is the combo to creating the most perfect scene. Peter Gabriel has a stunning voice and this song is beautiful. So beautiful in fact that I made my dad give me his vinyl, which contains this song. So, this scene made me cry so much because of how sweet it is. Lloyd is socially awkward and I feel I can relate to him with it.

Set in the 1980s, I think Lloyd would be one of those guys that just kind of sits on Tumblr all day if he was in my generation. Diane would be a popular preppy girl just like she is in the film. Lloyd gets the girl of his dreams and treats her perfectly. This film is a must-watch purely for the scene. Just watch it, everyone!

So, that's my top 10 scenes. I scoured the earth and dug up a few dead bodies of films along the way. I sat and cried through films and used a lot of tissues and popcorn in the process but this is my top 10. Anyway!

All my love,
Anna x

NFL: Family seeks answers in death near Hernandez home | The ...

Boston ? At least one company yanked an endorsement deal from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Friday as puzzled family members of a friend found slain a mile from Hernandez?s home sought answers about how he died.

Police have searched in and around Hernandez?s sprawling home in North Attleborough, not far from where the Patriots practice, but a court clerk said that as of Friday afternoon no arrest warrants had been issued in the case. The Bristol County district attorney has not released any information, other than saying the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was being treated as a homicide.

A jogger found Lloyd?s body in an industrial park Monday. Family members said Friday that Lloyd had been dating Hernandez?s fiancee?s sister for about two years. They said the two men were friends who were together the night Lloyd died.

Police in nearby Providence, R.I., said they had assisted Massachusetts state police and North Attleborough police with activity related to the Hernandez investigation at a strip club named Club Desire. It was unclear if they believed Lloyd and Hernandez might have been at the club in the days before Lloyd died.

Family members have said Lloyd, 27, was never in trouble.

CytoSport, a Benicia, Calif.-based company that makes Muscle Milk and other supplements for athletes, said Friday it was ending Hernandez?s endorsement contract, effective immediately, because of the investigation.

A reporter was escorted out of the club Friday afternoon before she could speak with employees or patrons.

Family members have said Lloyd, 27, was never in trouble.

story continues below

"I want the person that killed my son to be brought to justice," said Lloyd?s mother, Ursula Ward. "That?s my first-born child, my only boy child, and they took him away from me. ... I wouldn?t trade him for all the money in the world. And if money could bring him back I would give this house up to bring my son back. Nothing can bring my son back."

Family members said they had heard from Lloyd?s girlfriend but not from Hernandez after Lloyd?s death. They are anxiously awaiting an arrest in the case.

"We?re just hoping for justice," cousin Marsha Martin said. "We don?t want Odin to have died in vain."

Hernandez?s attorney Michael Fee has acknowledged media reports about the state police search of Hernandez?s home but said he wouldn?t have any comment on it.

Attleboro District Court clerk magistrate Mark E. Sturdy said three search warrants were issued in the investigation earlier in the week but have not been returned, meaning they?re not public. He said no arrest warrants had been filed in state courts by the time court closed at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Hernandez was gone from his home for most of the day Friday, including when two state police officers knocked on his door. He returned home with his attorney around 5 p.m.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not anticipate commenting publicly during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.

CytoSport, a Benicia, Calif.-based company that makes Muscle Milk and other supplements for athletes, said Friday it was ending Hernandez?s endorsement contract, effective immediately, because of the investigation.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Zombies gained speed, may now get smart

Movies

In Brad Pitt's new movie, "World War Z," a soldier gives Pitt's character the lowdown on their undead opponent: Bullets to the body only slow them down, though head shots kill them. They sometimes ooze a kind of black tarry substance, and they love biting humans "like fat kids love Twix." And as filmgoers watch, they discover that these zombies can hear a Pepsi can drop a mile away, tackle like a Dallas Cowboy in the Super Bowl, are willing to fling themselves off skyscrapers and over giant walls, and are smart enough to use the bodies of their fellow undead as a ladder to clamber toward their human targets.

IMAGE: World War Z

Zombies generally don't work together, but in "World War Z," they use each other's undead bodies to form a ladder to get over a wall to eat humans.

These are not your grandfather's zombies.

Moviegoers have seen the undead evolve in a thousand gruesome rotting ways since the creatures of 1932's "White Zombie" were docile enough to work in a sugar plantation. George A. Romero took the creature -- which he called a "ghoul," not a "zombie" -- to a whole new level in 1968's classic "Night of the Living Dead," making them totter out of graves to munch on the living. And from then on, Hollywood was off, shambling down a rotting cinematic pathway littered with discarded body parts and ever-evolving zombie lore.

Zombies stayed about as fast as your walker-using Aunt Fannie until the 2002 release of "28 Days Later." Purists will tell you that the infected in that film weren't dead, so are not technically zombies. But no matter, they still introduced the public to the idea of fast movie zombies who no longer staggered after you like a drunk uncle, but match Pittsburgh Steeler Hines Ward (who played a zombie on AMC's "Walking Dead") for speediness.

"I do think that if you had to be bitten by slow movers to turn, you could avoid them and eventually defeat them," said Cal Miller, author of numerous zombie books and zombie comic strip TedDead. " It would be like fighting an army of senior citizens. The fast ones are just horrifying to me. They?ll run you down."

IMAGE: World War Z

Jaap Buitendijk / AP

Brad Pitt gets knocked over by a swarm of fast-moving zombies in "World War Z."

The zombie diet has changed along with their speed. In the Romero film trilogy, zombies would munch on any part of a living human, from scalp to sole. But in 1985's "Return of the Living Dead" -- not a Romero film -- it's said that the zombies specifically consume the brains of the living because only that soothes the pain of being dead. That film explanation led to the popularization of the ever-popular "BRAAAAAINS!" quote so many associate with the living dead.

"Most people's knowledge of the zombie genre seems to be a bit limited," Miller said. "You say 'zombies' and they answer 'brainzzzzz,' But that was pretty much just in the 'Return of the Living Dead' movies/books. You try and explain that zombies eat the whole body and, well, unfamiliar people get either intrigued or grossed out."

Miller finds the brain-eating cliche a bit odd. "Human teeth can't bite through a skull," he said. "Zombies really go for the easy spots. Arms, legs, neck, belly."

IMAGE: World War Z

Jaap Buitendijk / AP

In "World War Z," Brad Pitt arms himself with an axe because any sound, including gunshots, draws the attention of the undead.

Mac Montandon, author of "The Proper Care and Feeding of Zombies," thinks zombies are resourceful when it comes to dining. "In my book, I point out that the zombie diet is not that far off from the Inuits, indigenous peoples of the Arctic region," he said. "I think that, paradoxically, when it comes down to it, zombies have a really clever survival mechanism that kicks in -- meaning if they had to eat, say, someone's elbow to go on not living, they would."

Zombies were once human, and movies differ on whether their intelligence or humanity still exists once they're undead. In 2004, "Shaun of the Dead" played a zombie invasion for laughs, and in 2013's "Warm Bodies," a zombie actually falls in love with a human.

"Zombies are not funny," said Montandon. "But 'Shaun of the Dead' was. In terms of ('Warm Bodies') human-zombie romance, that seems like much less of a stretch than a human-Tom Cruise romance."

Even the way to kill a zombie isn't agreed on by all moviemakers. It's generally agreed that a head injury must be involved, specifically something that destroys the undead brain. Some require zombie bodies to be burned, but in "World War Z," the fingers of a zombie that's been burned almost to solid ash are still shown to wiggle.

"The head can live if cut off at the neck," said Miller. "A personal pet peeve of mine, however, is when a disembodied head groans. No diaphragm, no lungs, no airflow, no groan."

As long as zombie movies continue to make money, the creatures will doubtlessly continue to evolve on film.

"I think zombies are ready for their 'Coneheads' moment," said Montandon, referring to the "Saturday Night Live" aliens who claimed to be French. "That is, they already have so many human characteristics, it's not hard to see them passing as humans in a suburb of Chicago, for instance."

Miller's novel, "Het Madden: A Zombie Perspective," is written from the point of view of an intelligent zombie, and he believes smart zombies will be the next wave.

"I feel there have to be smart and dumb zombies, like smart and dumb people," Miller said. "The smart ones lurk and plan. They don't walk into machetes."

How to disable video auto-play in Instagram for iPhone

How to disable video auto-play in Instagram for iPhone

If you haven't already heard, Instagram was recently updated to include support for video uploads. Just like Vine, Instagram can auto-play those videos as soon as you scroll past them. For many of us, this feature may be more annoying than it is useful. As it happens, there's a way to disable it.

Here's how:

  1. Launch the Instagram app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. In the bottom navigation, tab on the Profile tab which is the furthest to the right.
  3. On your profile screen, tap on the Settings gear in the upper right hand corner.
  4. Scroll down a ways and they'll see an option for Auto-Play videos. Tap to turn the slider to the Off position.

That's it. Instagram will now not play videos automatically as you scroll past them unless you actually tap on them to play them.

Yearslong probe dismantles massive North Texas prostitution ring

PLANO ?? A federal indictment alleges that a Richardson man operated 10 brothels that masqueraded as massage parlors in Collin, Dallas and Tarrant counties as part of a complex prostitution ring that stretched into at least five other states and generated more than $1 million since 2010.?

Currently, 11 people face federal racketeering charges and another nine face state charges related to prostitution, said Malcolm Bales, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.?

Sitting at the top of the seven-count federal indictment is Quyen Thuc ?Tony? Ha, who?s accused of running the operation. The indictment frequently refers to the locations as ?Tony?s Brothels.?

Ha is also accused of paying two detectives $305,000 since March 2011, thinking the money would prompt them to overlook the illegal operation and allow it to continue without interference. The detectives handed the money over to the FBI. Officials do not suspect any abuse of power related to the case.

?Both officers were merely pretending to be corrupt, and every dollar has been seized as evidence,? Bales said.?

The investigation, known as Operation Flaming Dragon, began more than two years ago after Plano residents complained to police of suspicious behavior at certain massage parlors, said Chief Greg Rushin.?

Plano police launched an investigation and quickly learned that Dallas police were also looking into similar reports there. At that point, Rushin alerted state and federal authorities, which aided the departments for more than two years.?

?I?ve been the chief for 12 years, I?ve been in the office for 26 years working for the department and I have not seen anything of this scope involving prostitution,? Rushin said during a news conference Wednesday at the Plano Police Department.

The federal indictments allege that Ha managed his brothels alongside defendants Kim Sey ?Tony? Lau and Li Yan Zhou, who promoted the locations using ads on websites like Backpage.com. Some remain live: they feature galleries of scantily clad Asian women and red and yellow text advertising ?gentle touch? massages for $40 for a half hour and $60 for an hour.?

The feds allege that Ha and his colleagues transported prostitutes from California, Nevada and Georgia to Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Says the indictment, ?the business enterprise pays for the prostitute?s airfare either to or from Texas, and the prostitutes are required to pay for the other leg of the trip.??

According to the document, North Texas was the center of the operation: The women would be flown in and spend three to four weeks rotating brothels here and then return to their homes in other states.?No warrants had been served in any other states related to this multi-agency investigation, said Diego Rodriguez, the FBI special agent in charge of the bureau?s Dallas division.

The second count of the indictment says the criminal organization bought condoms in bulk that were manufactured in Stratford, Conn. and had them shipped across state lines to be used in criminal acts, which breaks federal law.?

Dallas police, working with state and federal authorities, on Monday arrested four women at two of the parlors and one residence in Far North Dallas and Collin County.

Chinli Yeh, 57, was arrested at a nondescript suburban home at 13309 Kit Lane, located just east of Coit near the Dallas/Richardson border. Pang Hsiang Lin, 51, and Yu Tao Chen, 52, were arrested at the J.J. Asian Health Center located at 5528 Alpha Road. Yuanli Zhang, 45, was taken into custody at the Rosemeade Asian Spa, located at 3920 Rosemeade Parkway.?

None of those arrested Monday are named in the federal indictment.?

Rodriguez said warrants were also served in Plano and Hurst. The day?s police work resulted in the closure of 10 of the businesses, he said.?

In Plano, Yafen Wang, 47, and LeQuin Huang, 40, were arrested and charged with prostitution. Yubing Li, 50, Hui Li, 44, Jing Liu, 53, and Jihong Liu, 41, were arrested and charged with massage therapy license violations.?

Unlike the Dallas and Collin County warrants, those served in Tarrant remain sealed Wednesday afternoon.

?We?ve dealt a crippling blow to this operation,? Rodriguez said.?

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents are helping investigate, however Bales said they?ve found no evidence of human trafficking or enslavement. All of the women involved are of Asian descent, he said, and all appear to be in the country legally. He said ICE agents are also investigating the validity of the women?s visas.?

The indictment alleges the prostitution ring began in 2010. While Bales declined to attach a specific amount to its revenue, he did say he expected it to exceed $1 million.?

?It?s a lot of money,? he said. ?A lot of money.??

In March 2011, police documents say Ha called Dallas Det. Paul Park at his desk to set up a meeting. He offered to pay thousands of dollars each month in return for police turning a blind eye to the prostitution ring. Park agreed and began accepting cash ?? and then logging it and getting additional evidence to aid the case, police documents say. Park also convinced Ha to become comfortable bribing Plano Det. Brant Hickman, who he?s also accused of giving money to.

In September of that year, Ha agreed to pay $10,000 a month if Park helped ?identify new brothel locations, direct law enforcement actions against competitors, protect Ha?s existing brothels and remove any charges filed against Ha?s prostitutes.??

The investigation, says the indictment, netted $305,000 solely from bribes. Bales said all of that money has been entered into evidence.?

On Feb. 22, co-conspirator Yu Lin Chang was arrested for hiring an unlicensed massage therapist at the Asian Therapy Spa in the 2900 block of W. 15th St. in Plano. The indictment alleges that Ha gave Det. Hickman $2,000 to keep the location open and help Chang avoid being convicted.?

Ha and his co-conspirators are accused of renting residences to house the prostitutes in St. Louis, Miss.; Oklahoma City; Dallas and The Colony. The women were brought to Texas from California, Nevada, Georgia and other unnamed locations. Many of the individuals indicted allegedly shuttled the women to and from hotels and airports to where they provided sex acts for money.?

As a result of the investigation, agents seized a 2002 Lexus IS300; a 2002 Honda Accord; a 2004 Toyota Tacoma; a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer; a 2012 Honda Accord; a 2009 BMW; a 2005 Lexus RX330; a 2013 Mercedes GLK; and a 2005 Honda Civic EX. Also seized was a property at 3617 Cromwell Street in Plano and the $305,000 that the detectives were bribed with.?

Eight of the 11 named in the federal indictment have been arrested.?Bales said investigators have "good leads on the whereabouts" of the remaining three.?

Ha, Chang, Lau, Yu Qian, Li Meng Shank and Tin Min Lo are due for a detention hearing on Friday at 1:30 p.m. before Magistrate Judge Amos L. Mazzant in federal court in Sherman. Also indicted are Xia Xu, Prapatson Verhotz, Tin Min Lo, Michael Jones and Jia-Her Hwang.?

The counts include conspiracy to use interstate facility to facilitate unlawful action; use of interstate facility to facilitate unlawful action; and bribery. The first two counts are punishable by no more than five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The third, bribery, comes with a punishment of up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.?

Comparing The Market Share of Android Phones To The iPhone Is A D@mned Lie

by John Kirk ??|?? June 20th, 2013

Disraeli is reputed to have said that there were three kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

?Lies, damned lies, and statistics? is a phrase describing the persuasive power of numbers, particularly the use of statistics to bolster weak arguments. ~ Wikipedia

Comparing the market share of Android phones to the market share of iPhones is a damned statistical lie and it should never be done. Here?s why.

Venn Diagrams

If you drew a Venn diagram of ?all iPhones? and ?all iPhones that ran iOS?, they would be one and the same. Here is another example of such an overlapping Venn Diagram:

helpful-venn-diagram-for-the-ladies-18244-1267403205-248

Source: thehighdefinite

? If you replace ?Male friends who joke about having sex with you? with the words ?all iPhones?; and
? If you replace ?Men who would have sex with you if you showed the slightest interest? with the words ?all iPhones that ran iOS??

?you would ruin a perfectly good joke. But you would also have a Venn diagram that accurately represented the overlap between ?iPhones? and ?iPhones that run on the iOS operating system.? All iPhones run on iOS. But the opposite is not true. iOS is more than just iPhones.

On the other hand, Android phones are made by many manufacturers. About 40% are made by Samsung and the other 60% are made by Motorola, Sony, HTC and a variety of different hardware manufacturers. Why then do we lump all Android phones together and count them as one?

The only legitimate reason to group all Android phones together is in order to suggest a causal relationship between the number of Android phones and the strength of the Android platform. But is there such a relationship?

Comparing Android?s phone activation numbers to the iPhone?s sales numbers is akin to comparing fish to whales and concluding that fish outnumber mammals.

The Folly Inherent In Comparing Android Phones to iPhones Instead Of Comparing Android To iOS

Comparing Android?s phone activation numbers to the iPhone?s sales numbers ? and concluding that Android outnumbers iOS ? is akin to comparing fish to whales and concluding that fish outnumber mammals.

Fish MAY outnumber mammals, but not nearly by the margin that fish outnumber whales. And Android devices do outnumber iOS devices but not nearly by the margin that Android phones outnumber iPhones. When making comparisons, one needs to compare like to like, otherwise, it skews the results.

There have been over 900 million Android devices activated and over 600 million iOS devices sold. And ? if Flurry?s clientele is representative ? the total number of active Android devices may only exceed the total number of active iOS devices by little more than 10% (see chart, below).

ios_android_chart1

Source: Flurry

Comparing an operating system to an operating system; comparing all active devices to all active devices; comparing like to like; ? now THAT is the proper basis for a comparison.

You do not compare an entire class of things to a subset of another class, and you do not compare phones that run the Android operating system to a subset of devices (iPhones) that run on the iOS operating system, otherwise, you are likely to get is a skewed result?

?and a damned lie?

?or (-shudder-) a ?Chart Of The Day.?

Legitimate Reasoning Vs. Bogus Reasoning

There are legitimate reasons to compare fish to whales and there are legitimate reasons to compare Android phones to iPhones.

images-60Mammals and Fish Venn Diagram

But if you?re actually trying to compare fish to mammals or the Android operating system to the iOS operating system, such a comparison conceals ? rather than reveals ? the truth. It is deceitful, dishonest, untruthful, false, duplicitous, mendacious; hypocritical, untrustworthy, unscrupulous, unprincipled, two-faced, double-dealing, underhanded, crafty, cunning, sly, scheming, calculating, treacherous, Machiavellian, sneaky, tricky, foxy, crooked, fraudulent, counterfeit, fabricated, invented, concocted, made up, trumped up, untrue, false, bogus, fake, spurious, fallacious, deceptive and misleading.

In other words, it?s a damn lie.

(AP) ? State police returned to the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, two days after a body was found about a mile away.

Two troopers knocked on the door of Hernandez's sprawling house in an upscale subdivision Wednesday morning, but no one answered. The night before, police spent hours there as another group of officers searched an industrial park where the body was found Monday. No more details about the body have been released.

Sports Illustrated, citing an unidentified source, reported that Hernandez was not believed to be a suspect in what was being treated as a possible homicide. The magazine said police had spoken with Hernandez.

State police referred questions to Bristol District Attorney Sam Sutter's office, which declined to comment.

Sports Illustrated reported that the link between Hernandez and the case was a rented Chevrolet Suburban with Rhode Island plates that police had been searching for. The Associated Press could not independently confirm the report.

Hernandez is represented by the Athletes First agency, which said it has no comment "on the Aaron Hernandez situation." His mother said by phone from Connecticut on Tuesday she had no knowledge of a case involving him.

"I am aware of the reports, but I do not anticipate that we will be commenting publicly during an ongoing police investigation," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said.

Later Wednesday, a woman in a car with Connecticut plates pulled into the driveway and took a small dog in a cage inside through the garage.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL.

On Tuesday night, some police officers stood on the front steps of Hernandez's home and others could be seen inside. Some walked around the driveway and in the garage with flashlights. Before wrapping up their work for the night, one officer took a box out of the massive house.

North Attleborough is south of Boston on the Rhode Island state line, not far from the Patriots' stadium in Foxboro.

In 38 games, the 6-foot-1, 245-pound Hernandez has 175 receptions for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April, but is expected to be ready for training camp. The Patriots have not said which shoulder was operated on.

Last summer, the Patriots gave Hernandez a five-year contract. It was worth $40 million, according to reports, and came just months after the team locked up Gronkowski, through 2019.

"Aaron's improved a lot," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said at the time. "He's worked hard, he's improved a lot in all phases of the game ? the passing game, the running game, protection and his overall versatility. He's doing a good job for us."

Visualized this is where the Higgs Boson was discovered

It's not everyday you get to tour CERN, the international particle physics research facility that spans the border of both France and Switzerland. It's even more rare to go down into the sprawling facility's tunnels to see an inactive and under repair Large Hadron Collider -- currently, the world's most powerful particle accelerator. But that's just what we did this past week, as we spent some quality time with CERN's physicists and visited the dormant LHC, as well as two of its detectors: ALICE and CMS (pictured above). There'll be much more to come from our trip to CERN, so stay tuned. But for now feast your eyes on the birthplace of the Higgs Boson discovery.

45 years later, details of fatal Yuri Gagarin jet crash revealed

RSC Energia

Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man to fly in space, as seen in 1968 before his death in a jet crash.

By Robert Z. Pearlman

The circumstances surrounding the death of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, who was killed in a 1968 jet crash, have long been clouded in theories and rumors. Now, the first man to walk in space says he can reveal what really happened to his friend and fellow Russian cosmonaut.

Alexei Leonov, who in 1965 became the first man to leave a spacecraft and float in the open vacuum of space, has worked for years to learn what led to Gagarin's death. He finally gained permission and spoke about the details in an interview released on Friday by the state-funded Russia Today (RT) television network.

Yuri Gagarin?made history by launching on the world's first manned spaceflight on April 12, 1961. He died just shy of his Vostok 1 mission's seventh anniversary, on March 27, 1968, when the MiG-15 fighter jet that he and instructor Vladimir Seryogin were piloting on a routine training flight went down outside a small town near Moscow. [Photo Gallery: First Man in Space ? Yuri Gagarin in Pictures]

Leonov, who had been in the vicinity that day and reported hearing two loud booms in the distance, served on the state commission that investigated the crash. The official findings reported Gagarin and Seryogin had maneuvered to avoid colliding with a bird or other object, and as a result, entered a tailspin and plummeted to the ground.

Russia Today

A still photo from a video of former Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first man to walk in space, during his interview with the RT television network talking about the mysterious death of Yuri Gagarin..

"That conclusion is believable to a civilian ? (but) not to a professional," Leonov, now 79, explained to RT. "In fact, everything went down differently."

Vodka, vent or vertical drop
The official explanation of how Yuri Gagarin died did not go unchallenged, and not by Leonov alone. Many theories, ranging from the technical to the conspiratorial, have been raised in the decades since. [Vostok 1: Yuri Gagarin's Historic Manned Spaceflight Recalled (Video)]

The Soviet government, military and even the KGB looked into some the claims, dismissing rumors that Gagarin had been intoxicated, or that he and Seryogin had been "taking potshots at wild deer from their plane, causing it to spiral out of control," as Leonov recounted in "Two Sides of the Moon," the joint-biography he penned with U.S. astronaut David Scott in 2004.

The government's investigations also ruled out sabotage.

Documents declassified in 2003 revealed that the KGB had suspected air traffic controllers as having contributed inadvertently to the crash by providing bad weather data. Gagarin and Seryogin were led to believe that a bank of clouds were higher than they really were, leaving them too little time to recover from a spin, the intelligence agency suggested.

Yet another theory, put forth by a retired Soviet Air Force colonel, proposed that the pilot who had previously flown the MiG-15 jet had tampered with or otherwise left an air vent open in the cockpit, leading to Gagarin and Seryogin suffering from oxygen deprivation at altitude.

For his part, Leonov held for years that he thought the first loud boom he heard was another jet breaking the sound barrier, followed soon thereafter by the sound of Gagarin's jet hitting the ground.

Another pilot's error
"We knew that a Su-15 (fighter jet) was scheduled to be tested that day, but it was supposed to be flying at the altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) or higher, not 450-500 meters (1,480-1,640 feet)," Leonov told RT. "It was a violation of the flight procedure."

A new declassified report confirmed that an unauthorized Sukhoi (Su-15) supersonic jet flew dangerously close to Gagarin's MiG-15.

"While afterburning the aircraft reduced its echelon at a distance of 10-15 meters (30-50 feet) in the clouds, passing close to Gagarin, turning his plane and thus sending it into a tailspin ? a deep spiral, to be precise ? at a speed of 750 kilometers per hour (470 miles per hour)," Leonov said in the television interview.

Upon seeing the released report, Leonov also realized that his own account of that day had been recorded incorrectly. The report suggested that he heard the loud booms 15 to 20 seconds apart, when it was actually two seconds.

"That suggested that the two jets must have been no less than 50 kilometers apart." Leonov said.

Armed with the report's data, a new computer simulation was generated, revealing why Gagarin's jet went down.

"Now, a jet can sink into a deep spiral if a larger, heavier aircraft passes by too close and flips (the jet) over with its backwash. And that is exactly what happened to Gagarin. That trajectory was the only one that corresponded with all our input parameters," Leonov told RT.

Leonov was allowed to go public with the story, except for one detail: the Su-15 pilot's name. That pilot, who is now 80, is said to be in poor health.

"I was asked not to disclose the pilot's name," Leonov explained. "He is a good test pilot. ... It will fix nothing."

David stymies former club, as Royals top Rays

By MARK DIDTLER

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:40 p.m. ET June 16, 2013

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Wade Davis kept the Kansas City Royals' long stretch of strong pitching intact in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Davis stopped his five-game winless streak, Jeff Francoeur homered, and the Royals beat the Rays 5-3 on Sunday.

The Royals have given up three runs or fewer in 14 of 15 games. Kansas City has won 10 of 12.

"Kansas City is playing really well now," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "They deserved to win. They're playing with a lot of confidence. If you look at their team ERA, it's number one in baseball. Kansas City outplayed us, period."

After the game, the Rays announced that they were going to purchase the contract of slugging prospect Wil Myers from Triple-A Durham in time for Tuesday's doubleheader at Boston. The outfielder, who hit 14 homers with Durham, was acquired in a seven-player offseason deal with the Royals that sent Davis and starting pitcher James Shields to Kansas City

Davis (4-5) gave up two runs - both coming in the first - and five hits in six innings for his first win since he beat the Los Angeles Angels on May 15.

"I knew once he got through the first, he was going to settle in and be fine," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "Wade did a great job of limiting the damage. I just had a real good feeling he'd get back in the dugout, he'd regroup and hold them right there. That's exactly what he did."

It was Davis' first game against the Rays.

"I was up in the zone a little bit," Davis said. "The walks and a couple of hits that got in there were just balls I left up a little bit. Once I got the breather in the third or fourth inning when we scored some runs, I got a little breathing room."

After Francoeur hit a solo homer in the fifth inning, Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon had RBI singles to put the Royals ahead 4-2 in the sixth. Gordon added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Francoeur had only 13 hits in 83 at-bats before delivering his third homer this season.

Greg Holland, the fourth Kansas City reliever, earned his 14th save despite allowing a homer to Jose Lobaton in the ninth.

Roberto Hernandez (4-7) allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings for Tampa Bay, which went 4-6 on a 10-game homestand. The Rays were coming off a three-game series with Boston that included a 10-8 loss in 14 innings, and a 2-1 defeat.

"The Red Sox series was kind of a weird one," Rays third baseman Kelly Johnson said. "It was tough to lose a couple of those games. We had opportunities to win both. Then this series was one of those hangover series from that. It kind of felt that way anyway. Not a ton of energy, not a ton of life, unfortunately.

"There's always going to be some stuff like that. We've got to get it turned around quickly."

Billy Butler had an RBI single in the first for Kansas City, which won three of four against Tampa Bay.

The Rays took a 2-1 lead in the first when Luke Scott drove in a run with a double and scored on Desmond Jennings' single.

Davis prevented further damage by getting an inning-ending fly from Jose Molina with the bases loaded.

The Rays announced during the game that right-hander Alex Cobb, who was hit on the right ear by a liner off the bat of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning on Saturday night, had been discharged from Bayfront Medical Center.

"I know we feel wonderful about it," Maddon said. "I think the rest of baseball feels good about it."

Tests showed Cobb has a mild concussion. He was put on the 7-day concussion list, and Tampa Bay recalled right-hander Josh Lueke from Triple-A Durham.

In a message posted on his Twitter account, Cobb thanked Rays head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield and the doctors at Bayfront, and said that he, "Woke up with only a minor headache today."

There was a loud cheer from the announced crowd of 27,442 at Tropicana Field when the news about Cobb was posted on the scoreboard after the top of the sixth.

NOTES: To make room on the roster for Myers, INF Ryan Roberts was optioned to Durham. ... Tampa Bay LHP David Price (strained left triceps) isn't ready to start a minor league rehab assignment. He will have another bullpen session on Tuesday. ... The Royals flew in 21 fathers and two sons of team personnel to be together for Father's Day. "I've never heard of anybody doing this before so I think it's a special treat for everybody," Yost said. ... Rays 3B Evan Longoria (right foot) was the DH for the fourth consecutive game. Maddon hopes Longoria will be able to play in the field on Tuesday. ... Kansas City LHP Danny Duffy (elbow ligament replacement surgery) made his second rehab start Saturday night for Triple-A Omaha. He gave up two runs, four hits and three walks in three innings.

She quickly followed with a second tweet: "More info will come when the time is right! Thank you all for understanding! We love you all dearly! Overwhelmed with love right now."

Kardashian mom Kris Jenner linked to both tweets on her Twitter account, then wished West a Happy Father's Day.

Asked for comment on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmys, where she was a presenter, Jenner said, "She's in charge," pointing at her publicist who whisked her away from print reporters after doing TV interviews.

The reality TV star's pregnancy was almost as anticipated as the royal pregnancy of Kate Middleton, who is due in mid-July. That's about the time the Kardashian baby had been due.

The 32-year-old has often been photographed since announcing she was pregnant, opting to continue to wear designer clothing. She told The Associated Press in April that she eventually embraced being an expecting mom after getting past "the awkward phases and stages."

The couple had initially kept the baby's gender a secret, but the sex was revealed earlier this month during one of Kardashian's doctor appointments on "Keeping up with the Kardashians."

News of the birth has been swaddled in secrecy. Representatives for West and Kim Kardashian didn't respond to emails and calls from The Associated Press, nor did any representatives for family members, friends and professional associates. And all of the weekend media reports on the birth were attributed to anonymous sources.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, West said he didn't like talking about his family or the arrival of his child.

"Like, this is my baby. This isn't America's baby," he said.
