Wahlberg says he wants to meet reputed mob boss

Mark Wahlberg says he's considering a jailhouse meeting with James "Whitey" Bulger, but victim's relatives are criticizing the actor's interest in the reputed former mob boss.

  1. More Entertainment stories
    1. Is 'Tangled' best Disney movie ever?

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider return this week as part of a wedding short shown before "Beauty and the Beast 3-D."

    2. 'Toddlers' mom OK with 'Sexy' song
    3. 'Iron Lady' less about Thatcher, more about aging
    4. Baldwin: 'Paradise Lost' makes moving on easier
    5. Happy birthday, Howard Stern

Bulger has reached out to Wahlberg, the actor told Boston's WAAF-FM radio Friday, and he speculated Bulger wants to give him rights to his story.

"He wants me to come down and visit him. Maybe he'll give me the exclusive rights to tell his story, 'cause he knows, you know, we can do it better than anybody else," Wahlberg said.

Wahlberg grew up in South Boston, also Bulger's home when he ran a local gang in the '70s, '80s and '90s while working as an FBI informant. Bulger, 82, is accused of participating in 19 murders before fleeing in 1995, allegedly after his FBI handler tipped him that an indictment was coming. He was caught in California last year after 16 years on the run.

Wahlberg said his "heart goes out" to loved ones of Bulger's victims, but the story has tremendous potential.

"If there's a story to be told there, and, you know, we can do it in the way we want in the way that we best see fit, then, you know, then it's certainly something that we would explore," he said.

Patricia Donahue, whose husband, Michael Donahue, was allegedly killed by Bulger during a hit on another man, said Saturday that's there nothing she can do to stop someone from making a movie. But, she said, she prays the filmmakers don't make Bulger a hero and "will portray him as he really is, the murderer that he is."

Donahue said she doubted Bulger would be honest with Wahlberg.

"The government can't get the truth out of him, nobody seems to be able to get the truth out of him, so why is he gonna to pour his heart out to Markie Wahlberg?" Donahue said.

But Wahlberg's local roots could help him sort through the lies, she added.

"He has a pretty good idea of who's who in this whole episode," she said.

Steven Davis, whose sister, Deborah Davis, was allegedly strangled by Bulger, told the Boston Herald that Bulger ruined "my whole family" and shouldn't be glamorized.

"I have a lot of respect for Mark (Wahlberg). I would hope that he would reach out to us, too," he said.

Phone messages left with Wahlberg's representatives at Leverage Management were not immediately returned Saturday.

A Massachusetts legislator, Sen. Stephen Brewer, has proposed a bill that allows only Bulger's victims to profit from his story.

Bulger is awaiting trial. A federal prosecutor said Wednesday at a status conference that he believes Bulger is trying to "manipulate the system" so he's never brought to trial for his role in the murders.

Bulger's lawyer said the volume of evidence he has received from prosecutors is "enormous" and he and other lawyers need more time to go through it, and noted that it generally takes 18-30 months for a murder case to go to trial in Massachusetts.

Another status conference in the case is scheduled for next month.

(AP) ? For a month, a killer who authorities believed was targeting homeless men had investigators scrambling to track down a suspect as three stabbing deaths put fear into the homeless population in the Orange County suburbs.

The killing of yet another homeless man over the weekend led to the arrest of a suspect in that and earlier deaths.

"We are extremely confident that we have the man that is responsible for the murders of all four homeless men in Orange County," Anaheim Police Chief John Welter said at a Saturday news conference. "We plan to request from the district attorney that he be charged with four counts of murder."

The man in custody, Itzcoatl Ocampo, 23, of Yorba Linda, was arrested Friday night after a man was found stabbed to death in the parking lot of a Carl's Jr. restaurant, Welter said.

Witnesses and bystanders at the crime scene chased Ocampo, and he was captured by a police officer who was part of a perimeter set up in response to dozens of 911 calls and other reports.

On Saturday the scene was covered with flowers and signs left in tribute the latest victim.

As the stabbings continued last month, a task force that included the FBI and four local police agencies formed to find the killer.

Authorities would give no further information on Ocampo, the evidence against him or any suspected motive.

Ocampo is being held without bail at the Anaheim jail. A phone number listed in Ocampo's name rang without an answer, and no one answered the door at the address where he had been living.

Family and friends said Ocampo served in the Marines in Iraq, and was mentally troubled when he returned in the summer of 2010, telling those close to him that in the year since he'd been seeing and hearing things.

"When he came back from Iraq, he was sick," Ocampo's uncle, Ifrain Gonzalez, told the Los Angeles Times.

Neither the Times nor The Associated Press was able to reach Marine officials to confirm details.

Investigators searched Ocampo's home in Yorba Linda on Saturday morning and left with shoes, clothing and a computer, according the Orange County Register.

Ocampo graduated from Yorba Linda's Esperanza High School in 2006, and had been living back in his hometown with two younger siblings, landlord Jim Tice told the Register.

Word of the arrest was greeted with cautious optimism among the Orange County homeless and their advocates.

"It was the topic of a lot of conversation tonight, and everybody was really excited, just really happy and relieved," said Larry Haynes, executive director of the Mercy House shelter in Santa Ana. "But until there is a conviction and we know for absolute certainty, we're hoping that people will try to stay safe."

Friday night's victim, 65-year-old John Berry, was interviewed by a reporter from the Los Angeles Times looking into the killings earlier this month. Berry, living under a tarp along a riverbed, said then that he wasn't scared enough to go to a shelter.

"I just like to stay outdoors," he said. "A guy can get killed crossing the street. I've been as careful as I can, watching and everything."

But in the days before his death he was uncharacteristically nervous, according to Marilyn Holland, an Anaheim woman who had befriended him and often brought him cookies.

"He told me he thought he was being followed," Holland told The Associated Press.

Holland was having dinner at a nearby restaurant Friday night when she saw dozens of police cars descending on the Carl's Jr. parking lot, and heard they had found a homeless man dead near the trash bin.

"I ran over and hugged my friend, screaming, 'Please tell me it's not John!' But it was," Holland said, fighting back tears.

The other men killed were all found stabbed to death like Berry.

James Patrick McGillivray, 53, was killed near a shopping center in Placentia on Dec. 20; Lloyd Middaugh, 42, was found near a riverbed trail in Anaheim on Dec. 28; and Paulus Smit, 57, was killed outside a Yorba Linda library on Dec. 30.

NASA questions Apollo 13 cmdr's right to sell list

Greg Rohan, president of Dallas-based Heritage, said Thursday the sale has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry. The checklist, he said, is being stored for now in the company's vault.

NASA is questioning whether?Apollo?13 commander James Lovell has the right to sell a 70-page checklist from the flight that includes his handwritten calculations crucial in guiding the damaged spacecraft back to Earth.

The document was sold by Heritage Auctions in November for more than $388,000, some 15 times its initial list price. The checklist gained great fame as part of a key dramatic scene in the 1995 film "Apollo?13" in which actor Tom Hanks plays Lovell making the calculations.

After the sale, NASA contacted Lovell and Heritage to ask whether Lovell had title to the checklist. Greg Rohan, president of Dallas-based Heritage, said Thursday the sale has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry. The checklist, he said, is being stored for now in the company's vault.

Rohan said Lovell provided a signed affidavit that he had clear title to the ring-bound checklist, which is standard procedure. Heritage does robust business in space memorabilia and has worked with many former astronauts, he added.

"It's one that is near and dear to our hearts," Rohan said of the space collectibles business. "We, like a lot of people, consider these astronauts to be national heroes."

The?Apollo?13 moon mission was aborted about 200,000 miles (300,000 kilometers) from Earth when an oxygen tank exploded on April 13, 1970, causing another tank to fail and seriously jeopardizing the three-man crew's ability to return home. Astronaut Jack Swigert famously said "Houston, we've had a problem here" after the explosion, according to a NASA history of the flight.

The crew was forced to move into the lunar landing module for the return flight. Lovell's calculations on the checklist were key in transferring navigation data from the command craft to the lunar module.

In an email to Heritage, NASA Deputy Chief Counsel Donna M. Shafer said there appeared to be "nothing to indicate" that the agency had ever transferred ownership of the checklist to Lovell.

"Only NASA has the authority to clear NASA property for sale," Shafer said in the email, which was provided by NASA to The Associated Press.

She said the matter has been turned over to NASA's Office of Inspector General, adding that "there is potential risk of the items being seized by the government until title issues have been resolved."

Lovell, 83, lives near Chicago and owns a restaurant bearing his name in Lake Forest, Illinois. In an email Friday to The Associated Press, the former astronaut said he is "seeking a meeting with NASA administration to clear up this misunderstanding." He did not elaborate.

NASA has also raised questions about title rights for two items Heritage had sold from?Apollo?9 astronaut Rusty Schweikart: a lunar module identification plate that brought more than $13,000 and a hand controller bid at $22,705. The space agency also targeted a fourth item, a hand glove worn by Alan Shepard during training forApollo?14 that brought more than $19,000.

The letters follow a federal lawsuit NASA filed last year in Miami against?Apollo?14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell seeking return of a camera he brought back from his 1971 moon mission. That lawsuit was settled in October when Mitchell agreed to give the camera to NASA, which in turn is donating it to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington.

Mitchell's attorney had argued prior to the settlement that NASA officials told astronauts long ago they could keep certain equipment from the missions, and many such items wind up on auction house lists. A 1972 NASA memo seems to back up that claim, requiring only that the astronauts provide the agency with lists of items in their possession.

Apollo?15 astronauts were reprimanded after they took unauthorized, special envelopes to the moon with stamps that were cancelled shortly after their return in 1971. They had a deal with a German stamp dealer who later sold them for $1,500 each.

Nook Tablet bootloader bypassed, Android 4.0 takes its first steps onto the platform

No points for calling this one, but it looks like Android 4.0 is well on its way to the Nook Tablet -- in a decidedly unofficial manner, of course. Just a few days after the tablet's bootloader was bypassed, developer Brandon Bennet (aka Nemith) has now apparently managed to get an early version of the Android 4.0-based CyanogenMod 9 up and running on the device, although you'll still have to wait a bit longer for something that's actually useable. What's more, some other developers have also managed to get the tablet to boot from a microSD card, and there's been some progress with Ubuntu on the tablet as well. Hit the links below for all the details and the latest from the xda-developers forum.

Updated App Transfers Contacts and More from BlackBerry to iPhone

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) January 10, 2012

BlackBerry to iPhone switchers can now transfer contacts, calendars, text messages, email messages, etc. more stably with the latest update for BerryMover, an iPhone app. The 1.2 update adds support for Mac users? data and improves the support for SMS messages.

The need for this app seems huge. In a United Sample survey last year, over 66% of Verizon-based BlackBerry users said they would switch to an iPhone when it became available. Therefore, the numbers are staggering.

"BerryMover transfers contacts from BlackBerry to iPhone," Tim Goggin, Co-Owner Of PocketMac said. "Until this app, if you owned a RIM smartphone, you were stuck. But now, all you need is a recent BlackBerry backup, iTunes and BerryMover. And you?re all set to transfer all your data."

BerryMover works by reading backup files. It then gives the user the option of choosing which data they want to import.

Goggin added, "Our 7 years working with the BlackBerry gives us the know-how to import this data and work with backup files. In fact, for many years, Research In Motion licensed our Mac-BlackBerry sync software."

Every copy of BerryMover comes with a complete video tutorial on how to import BlackBerry data to your iPhone. The app also includes the ability to import data from more than one backup file.

"BlackBerry customers ask us every day how they can get data from their old device to their new iPhone," Goggin concluded. "It?s holding them back and costing them money. Some customers have told us they have that one crucial text message or those dozen emails they need salvaged."

BerryMover will import all of the following data:
(*) Contacts
(*) Calendar
(*) Tasks
(*) Notes
(*) Text Messages
(*) Email Messages

Goggin concluded, "BerryMover makes the switch from BlackBerry to iPhone painless. Now switchers can transfer all their data over."

BerryMover is available now on the iTunes App Store for just $9.99.

Authorities: No new evidence in Natalie Wood case (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? No new evidence has been uncovered in the death of Natalie Wood that would point to foul play, authorities said Tuesday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's chief of detectives William McSweeney told the Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/wnzNOb) that several weeks of interviews and other investigative work have not uncovered any evidence the death was a homicide. It had been ruled as an accident.

Cold cases like Wood's are never really closed and detectives are still looking at some aspects of the case, said McSweeney. The investigation was reopened in November, when detectives said several sources came forward with new information.

Natalie Wood died sometime after the evening of Nov. 28, 1981, when the 43-year-old actress was boating off Catalina Island with her husband Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken. The evening before the drowning, Wood, Wagner and Walken, who was Wood's co-star in the film "Brainstorm," had dinner at a restaurant on the island.

Authorities said they returned to the yacht and had drinks and that Wagner and Walken got into an argument.

Walken went to bed, according to Wagner, who, after staying up with boat captain Dennis Davern, went looking for his wife and couldn't find her on board. He then noticed that a dinghy attached to the boat ? and his wife ? were gone.

Lifeguard captain Roger Smith told the Times in November that the actress could have been saved if officials had been called sooner to search for her. Smith said he was alerted that Woods was missing at 5:11 a.m. the next day.

Based on the condition of her body when she was pulled from the water, Smith said he believes she survived for some time in the water and was washed out to sea.
