Apple launches iTunes Store in 12 new Asia markets

Apple launched its iTunes Store in 12 Asian markets on Wednesday, giving consumers access to millions of songs and movies, but regional giants China, India and Indonesia were not on the list.

The move by California-based Apple, which has sold more than 16 billion songs worldwide on the online store, enables it to make more money from digital content in markets where its devices have become hugely popular.

Asian musicians would also benefit from having a secure new platform to sell their work to local fans in a region rife with intellectual piracy.

"What took them so long?" said Chen Wei Li, a 28-year-old Singaporean who owns an iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro laptop.

"I personally am looking to download some music off the iTunes store," he added.

The iTunes Store is now open to consumers with credit cards issued in Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

It was already available in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Customers will now be able to choose from more than 28 million songs, including hits by Asian stars.

They will also be able to rent or buy movies from studios such as 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal, Disney and Warner Brothers.

"We know that people will pay for content if they are able to access good services," said Jasper Donat, the Hong Kong-based president of Music Matters, an annual gathering of executives from the music industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

"Having promoted the Asian music industry around the world for nearly eight years, we are genuinely excited about today's iTunes announcement and look forward to welcoming more digital entertainment platforms and services to the region soon."

But China, India and Indonesia -- the three most populous Asian countries -- were notable omissions from Wednesday's launch.

"We're always working to bring the iTunes Store to more customers around the world, as conditions permit," Apple said in a written reply to AFP when asked why China and India, which have a combined population of 2.5 billion, were not yet included.

Neha Dharia, a Mumbai-based analyst with business research firm Ovum, said several criteria including support for intellectual property rights are considered by Apple before opening up the iTunes Store to any market.

"These include the adoption of Apple devices, consumer preferences for digital distribution of content, ability to forge partnerships for procuring local content and, of course, levels of piracy and the measures to combat it," Dharia told AFP.

Apple's Asian expansion, which followed the December launch of the iTunes Store in Brazil and 15 other Latin American markets, now makes commercial sense despite concerns over piracy, another analyst said.

"Up to a certain point, piracy in the whole region was something they were looking at with a critical eye," said Melissa Chau, a Singapore-based regional research manager with US market intelligence firm IDC.

"But what has changed in the last couple of years was how popular iPads and iPhones have become in this region.

"It makes sense for them to capture revenues from these users who have iPads and iPhones."

Apple is estimated to have shipped 35 million iPhones and iPads in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan in 2011, Chau said.

"This is the natural evolution of an integrated ecosystem for their own products and services," said Chau.

Apple's latest earnings report showed it made a profit of $11.6 billion on revenues of $39.2 billion in the March quarter, thanks largely to booming demand for iPhones and iPads in Asia including China.

Gold medal for winning hearts? British royals

LONDON (Reuters) - As top athletes gain followers ahead of the London Olympics, another elite group starring at the Games is also rising in popularity - Britain's royal family - following a tradition for the Olympics to strengthen bonds between royalty and the people.

Queen Elizabeth, who is enjoying her highest level of public satisfaction in 20 years following her Diamond Jubilee celebrations this month, will open the Olympics on July 27 and her equestrian granddaughter, Zara Phillips, is competing.

Phillips, 31, is only the second British royal to compete at an Olympics and follows in the footsteps of her mother, Princess Anne, who rode for Britain at the 1976 Montreal Games. Her father, Captain Mark Phillips, also competed twice for Britain.

While royalty is not usually associated with international sporting competitions, the list of royals competing and involved with the Olympics over the past century is long. Currently 12 of 105 members on the International Olympic Committee are royal.

Royal and sports historians said the tradition for royals and heads of state to play a part dated back to Athens in 1896 when the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, ensured the aristocracy was involved to give the event prestige and credibility.

"Since the start of the modern Olympics, most heads of state have made a big deal about being seen at the Olympics," Martin Polley, an Olympic historian and senior lecturer in sport at Southampton University, told Reuters.

"Democracies, dictatorships and monarchies like to be on display. The Olympics gives the king, queen and other members of royal families the chance to be seen sharing the same activities as everyone else and coming together as a nation - although there is still a clear demarcation in roles."

SPORTS OF KINGS

Phillips may only be the second British royal to compete but she is the latest in a line of royals at the Olympics where horse-riding and sailing have proven to be the sports of kings.

The first royal competitors emerged in 1900 in Paris.

Australian sport scientist Rob Wood, who runs the website topendsports.com, said his research found the first royal competitors were Count Hermann Alexandre de Pourtales, from an old Huguenot family of Switzerland, who won gold and silver medals in sailing with his wife, Countess Helene de Pourtales, in his crew. She was one of the first women Olympians and female medalists.

Greece's Count Alexander Mercati competed in golf in 1900.

At Stockholm in 1912, Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia, a German prince, won bronze in a team horse jumping and Russia's Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich also competed in equestrian.

Norway's Crown Prince Olav, who became king in 1957, won gold in sailing at the 1928 Amsterdam Games while his son, King Harald from 1991, sailed for Norway in 1964, 1968 and 1972.

Constantine II of Greece competed as Crown Prince Constantine at the Rome Games in 1960, winning a gold medal. He was king from 1964 until the Greek monarchy was abolished in 1973.

His sister, now Queen Sofia of Spain, sailed for Greece in the 1960 Olympics while her husband Juan Carlos, King of Spain, sailed for Spain in 1972, three years before becoming king.

Their daughter, Infanta Cristina, sailed for Spain at the 1988 Seoul Games while their son, Crown Prince Felipe, represented Spain in Barcelona in 1992, again in sailing.

Princess Haya of Jordan rode at Sydney in 2000.

ROYAL AFICIONADOS

Denmark's Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was in team dressage at Beijing 2008, winning bronze, while Saudi Arabia's Prince Faisal Alshalan and Prince Abdullah Bin Miteb also competed in equestrian.

The most notable royal in the Winter Games is Prince Albert of Monaco, an IOC member since 1985, who is a five-time winter Olympian in bob-sledding.

"Some sports, like equestrian and sailing, do have a number of royal aficionados and there has been a quite number of royal competitors but not many royal medalists," said Carolyn Harris, a royal historian with a PhD from Queen's University, Canada.

"But sport is something the younger royals have always shown interest in and promoted and we are seeing this with the British royals now, particularly Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry."

Rebecca Hopkins, managing director of sports PR agency ENS Ltd, said Olympic involvement could only add to the rising popularity of the British royal family whose efforts to "rebrand" and put an emphasis on younger royals is paying off.

A Ipsos Mori poll this month found 90 percent of people were pleased with the Queen's work compared to 75 percent in 1992, the Queen's famous "annus horribilis" when two royal marriages broke down, including that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, one royal marriage ended in divorce, and a fire destroyed large sections of Windor Castle.

This satisfaction level fell to 66 percent in 1998, the year after Princess Diana's death in a car crash in Paris.

"The Olympics is something they can do that is apolitical," Hopkins told Reuters. "With Zara Phillip competing as well, it is a good story for the royal family."

Bob Ford: In Sandusky case, Penn State tries to get ahead of civil actions

The purpose of the program is very simple. That much is true. The university wants to get ahead of the tide of civil complaints that will be brought by the victims and buy short against a market that could turn against Penn State quite severely.

It's the smart thing to do - settle quietly, extract no-public-comment promises as part of the bargain - and move on. The school knows that a jury might reasonably find some of its top administrators liable for allowing Sandusky to remain on campus and for not taking allegations made against him to the proper legal authorities.

Penn State could risk waiting for those judgments to go in its favor after former vice president for business and finance Gary Schultz; on-leave athletic director Tim Curley; and, quite possibly, former president Graham B. Spanier are tried on various perjury and failure-to-report charges. That would be a huge bet with possibly devastating consequences, however, and not a risk the school appears willing to take.

The school might be calculating that the victims, many of whom came from troubled or disadvantaged backgrounds, will take the quick settlement rather than slog through a civil process in which they will once again have to recount the most painful memories of their lives. It's a pricey game of Let's Make A Deal, and some of the victims will probably take the money on the table rather than wait to find out what's behind door number three.

Sony drops VAIO T from free PlayStation offer, hikes real cost of entry to $970

Remember how it seemed too good to be true that Sony's back to school promo would let you buy a VAIO T and get a free PlayStation 3 or Vita worth a third of the value of the Ultrabook you just bought? Well, it was. Sony has quietly dropped the $750 laptop from the PCs that qualify for the deal, raising the real qualifying price to $970 for a 15.5-inch VAIO S. Some will cry foul at being denied such a killer bargain without warning, but it's easy to see why Sony backed out: that's a lot of gear to give away for little in return. Dreams of heading to class with an ultraportable in hand and a PS3 at the dorm will have to be postponed, then, even if it's still an ample discount.

[Thanks, Gabriel]

Turkey deploys troops toward Syrian border

Turkish troops and military vehicles deployed towards the border with Syria yesterday as a precaution after Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan gave orders to react to any Syrian threat approaching the frontier.

Erdogan, who has given shelter in the border area to rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, announced the new rules of engagement for Turkish troops on the border after Syrian air defences shot down a Turkish warplane on Friday last week.

?I can confirm there are troops being deployed along the border in Hatay Province. Turkey is taking precautions after its jet was shot down,? a Turkish official said on condition of anonymity.

He said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved, but said they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas of Turkey?s southern Hatay Province. He said anti-aircraft guns were also being stationed along the border.

A military convoy of vehicles including anti-aircraft missile launchers from the 5th Mechanized Armored Brigade left a base in the southeastern city of Gaziantep yesterday and traveled to neighboring Kilis Province on the border, video from the Turkish Dogan news agency showed.

Roads were closed to traffic as the convoy, escorted by police cars, passed by.

Another convoy of about 30 military vehicles, including trucks loaded with missile batteries, left Turkey?s coastal town of Iskenderun on Wednesday and deployed near the Syrian border 50km away, Turkish news agencies said.

Turkish television film showed the column moving on Wednesday, escorted by police cars, along a narrow highway leading out of the town, the main port of Turkey?s Hatay province. It included rocket launchers on transporters, anti-aircraft artillery and military ambulances.

Erdogan said any military element moving towards the Turkish border and deemed threatening would be declared a military target. The preponderance of air defence weapons in the convoy suggested Turkey was preparing for any possible approach by Syrian helicopters or warplanes.

In other developments, peace envoy Kofi Annan is pushing a plan for an interim government for Syria to include representatives of both sides in the conflict ahead of an international conference tomorrow, diplomats said.

The weekend meeting in Geneva, which was agreed only after wrangling between Moscow and Washington over both the agenda and the guest list, is to be attended by some regional governments, but not by rival Middle East heavywights Iran and Saudi Arabia, diplomats said.

Annan?s proposed interim authority would exclude officials whose presence might jeopardize the transition ?or undermine efforts to bring reconciliation,? according to a summary given by one UN diplomat.

The major powers ? the US, Britain, France, China and Russia ? generally back the plan that will be discussed at a meeting of foreign ministers Annan has convened in Geneva, the diplomats said.

?The language of Annan?s plan suggests that Assad could be excluded, but also that certain opposition figures could be ruled out,? said a second UN diplomat, while stressing that there was nothing there that automatically excluded him.

However, Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said there was no guarantee that Annan?s document would be agreed to in Geneva.

Meanwhile, the opposition Syrian National Council yesterday said it would not join any interim government until al-Assad quits.

Google Nexus Q streaming player unveiled

8 hrs.

Google Wednesday introduced what it describes as the "first social streaming device of its kind" with the Nexus Q, which streams your music and entertainment from the cloud to your home, or even to your friends who also have Android phones or tablets.

"It's the first device that lets you create social playlists with your friends," the company said in a video shown on YouTube (shared?below).

The spherical, glowing?Q has the guts of an Android phone and near-field communication to sync with phones nearby. It also has a Micro-USB port. It can?connect to your TV and your stereo system, or run its own speakers with a built-in?amplifier. (Reminds me just a?bit of the orb in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" ??but that was used for something else.)

The Nexus Q will work in concert with Google's app store, now called Google Play, "play it all on the biggest speakers and screen in the house. There are no downloads, no syncing, no running out of space," the company says. Google Play now sells movies and TV episodes (as well as seasons).

The player will cost $299. You can pre-order it now, and it will start shipping in July. Google will also sell a pair of Triad bookshelf speakers for $399 that will work with the Nexus Q.?

LG slips out Optimus L3 DualSim for Russia and Ukraine, keeps you in touch with both Kiev and Kursk

LG slips out Optimus L3 DualSim for Russia and Ukraine, keeps you in touch with both Kiev and KurskLG's Optimus L3 was always designed with modest ambitions -- mostly of scooping up the starter smartphone crowd -- but a new variant for Russia and the Ukraine has our ears perked. The tiny L3 DualSim includes two SIM slots to let locals hop between two different phone numbers with a switch. Ostensibly it's to give jetsetting businesspeople a way to switch between their home and work phone lines, although the abundance of prepaid service options in the two countries makes us think there's some cost-saving involved as well. The tweaked L3 isn't just another dual-SIM conversion; LG has also seen fit to overcome qualms about performance with an 800MHz Snapdragon replacing the 600MHz of the original. Sadly, we're not seeing any upgrades to the creaky Android 2.3 install or the 3-megapixel camera, so this won't let you get a shrunken L5 on the cheap. At a price of 1,500 Ukranian grivnas (6,169 Russian rubles, or $186) without a contract, however, we suspect many Muscovites and Sevastopolians won't have objections to picking up the L3 DualSim for themselves come the July release.

Growing Online by Branding Your Business With SEO

You?re just about to leave for work, but decide to surf your preferred news portal first. A new financial planning book instantly catches your attention. Next, you visit your favorite forum, and one of the members is chatting about that same book. Then, you decide to visit Amazon.com to find some good books for your weekend trip. You check the ?Weekly Picks? recommendation list, and there?s that same book again.

You begin to wonder what the book is about and who the author is. But, you don?t have time. It?s time to leave for work now.

When you get to the office, you log on to Gmail where you see display ads for that same book. This book is everywhere! At home that night, you?re doing some online research for a household budget trends presentation at work tomorrow. You pull up the first site, and there?s a review for that same book.

Now, you just have to know more about this book. You do a Google search on the author. You find information about the skills of the author, as well as testimonials on the book. Within minutes, you?re downloading it to your iPad, Nook or Kindle.

This all shows just how powerful SEO branding is. It?s about having an online presence, which leads to product recognition, and in the end, purchases.

SEO Branding Helps a Business Grow

SEO branding does more than just boost online sales. It actually helps a business grow. One thing serious business owners who want to maximize their site?s search engine optimization needs to know is: People are more driven to buy based on personal facts, than impersonal ones.

Buyers rely on the way they think, understand and believe about certain conditions. Consumers add an ?emotional spin? when they review data. This spin is all about gut feelings and moods. These emotions have a major impact on your SEO activities.

How does SEO branding help?

SEO branding helps to build online trust for a business. It guides you so that you pick useful keywords, while understanding their purpose. This ensures that your landing pages get the best impact returns possible.

In most cases, consumers like to do online research before they make a purchase. When they decide to buy, to them, it?s not about your site?s rankings. It?s about the informative content they?ve read on your landing page, whether they believe you can help them solve a problem and what other people are saying online about your business, products and services.

Building Your Brand Online

In the old days, big businesses advertised on billboards. With them, businesses gained visibility with consumers on highways and in highly populated areas.

But, this type of advertising only worked as a short-term means of branding a business or product. In the digital age, companies need online branding to gain international visibility. Unlike billboards, online ads get exposed to consumers at the perfect time, when they?re interested.

Even an online banner ad needs SEO to get results. Combining SEO techniques with the use of banner ads ensures that the ad is in the right place at the right time, when your potential buyer is looking for information about your product or service.

SEO-driven advertising isn?t temporary. It?s there all day, everyday, sending subliminal messages to convince consumers that you?re the best company to solve their problem or fulfill their need. SEO-based advertising builds audience trust. It digs deep inside their minds and plants a seed that grows, so that when they?re ready to buy, they?ll buy from you.

SEO Branding is Like Fishing

Back in the days, fishermen would put small nets into the sea to snag a few fish. Today, they use much larger nets and ships that can catch go deeper into the waters. This helps them catch multitudes of fish with a smaller amount of manual labor.

This is the same concept behind SEO. Without SEO, a site will never perform to its fullest potential. A branding campaign that doesn?t include SEO is like driving on the freeway in first gear. Eventually, you?ll make it to where you?re trying to go. But, you?ll use much more gas. It will take you longer. And, you?ll probably burn out your clutch, and possibly your engine, before you arrive. To be cost-efficient and cost-effective, you need to use all five gears.

SEO is that larger, high-tech fishing net. But, instead of trying to catch fish, you?re fishing for the right people. SEO helps you reach the people who have a problem that your company can solve. Your SEO efforts help them to understand that.

SEO & Branding Should Be Synchronized

SEO and branding go together, as a united force. They have much more power when synchronized than each one has alone. SEO branding can have a long-lasting impact. It?s a measurable way of advertising that speaks directly to your target audience.

Makes sure your SEO and your branding are in sync with each other. Otherwise, you?ll lose out on sales potential, as well as the opportunity to maximize your business growth. SEO branding helps maximize both short-term and long-term growth.

What do you think about SEO branding as a way to build a business? What other ways can you think of to integrate branding campaigns with SEO? Share with us. We?d like to know.

Brian Secemsky, M.D.: Day 1 of Residency: Go

As this is the season for spanking-new physician trainees to flood hospitals around the U.S., I decided to chronicle my own very first 24 hours as a doctor so the reader can get a better insight into this annual event.

2000 hours, evening before first day: With my newly-starched white coat, stethoscope and light pen packed neatly into my Tumi man-purse, I make believe that I am sufficiently prepared for the first day at the hospital. As a precaution, I look in the mirror once more to greet myself as "Dr. Secemsky." Again it sounds fake, and I continue to believe I am an imposter. I proceed into my bedroom by 8:15 p.m. as if I've always turned in while it is still light outside.

2000 - 2200 hours: I convince myself that by skimming a medical textbook in bed eight hours prior to my first day as a working physician I will somehow bring back the 10,000 teaching points I had learned throughout medical school. I quickly discover that this is not the case and begin skimming the equally intimidating Game of Thrones. I fail at this as well and turn off the reading light.

2200 - 0200 hours: Insomnia ensues. This episode is different from past occurrences, as if every bit of my subconscious effort is focused on delaying the inevitability of the coming day. I begin the old routine: changing positions every five minutes, taking off and re-wearing socks, tapping my fingers to the most recent radio hit (clue: It wasn't not to Carly Rae Jepsen). I get up and stumble toward the mirror in order to try on my new doctor title once more. It sounds even more pathetic watching my reflection mumble barefoot while draped in an old Alf T-shirt. I stumble back to bed.

0530 hours: I wake up to three blaring alarms, as scheduled. I am at first convinced that I haven't slept a wink. Then I remember the dream I had of heading back to my family's home outside Chicago after being fired for inadequacy. I now wish I hadn't slept at all. I shower while absentmindedly humming Meatloaf's infamous ballad "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." I question my emotional stability.

0600 hours: I head to the coffee maker and begin my daily brew. I stop halfway. The vow to avoid coffee and cocktails for the first few weeks of residency emerges from the depths of my weary brain. I boil some hot water and reluctantly sip stale hibiscus tea I find in the back of the cabinet.

0615 hours: Carpool full of first-year resident physicians (interns) arrives to pick me up. I enter the car and nod a greeting to my new colleagues, joining the nervous silence. I am relieved not to be the only one in complete despair of the coming day.

0630 hours: Arrive at the hospital and meet my team of senior residents. Handshakes and shoulder pats soon follow my entrance. I do my best impression of looking casually happy to be there. I can only muster a half smile, half grimace while awkwardly hanging my thumbs from my belt loop. Afraid of smelling like fear, I amble toward the furthest seat from the conference room table as the team begins discussing the patients on the floor.

0635 - 1130 hours: Names, conditions and management decisions fly by me left and right as if I am Matrix-ing past any comprehension of the day's events. My fellow senior residents must have sensed my obliviousness as they are now penning down all the information for me to keep in my white jacket. By the time I am ready to make rounds, I end up looking like an origami figure, full of contorted papers sticking out in all angles from my jacket pockets. I look ridiculous. I head out to meet my first patient.

1130 - 1200 hours: I am lost in the hospital.

1200 - 1230 hours: More of a serendipitous discovery than a planned event, I stumble upon Ms. B's room. I strut up to my first real patient as a physician, puff out my chest, cross my arms and wait for myself to make a grand introduction. I do not make any such statement. In fact, I stand foolishly in complete silence while poor Ms. B throws me a tired look of acknowledgement. "You must be my new doctor." I resist the urge to turn around looking for such a specimen. Instead, I clear my throat and begin my meticulously practiced monologue. "Hi Ms. B. I'm Dr. Secemsky. I'll be your physician while you're here at the -- "

Ms. B immediately cuts me off. "I'm thirsty. Get me some orange juice." I jump at this opportunity, as this is something I feel I can handle without consulting the senior resident.

1230 - 1250 hours: I am lost in the hospital.

1250 hours: I return with apple juice. Ms. B lets off a distasteful grunt as she takes it from my shaky hand. It is obvious to me now that she is in complete control of this new doctor-patient relationship. I am somewhat relieved by this fact.

1250 - 1850 hours: I finish interviewing and examining Ms. B and make rounds on the rest of our teams' patients. As I still feel unfit to make real medical decisions without my senior physicians' input, I stick to the nutritional aspect of their health. This essentially involves making now-familiar refreshment runs while intermittently getting lost in the labyrinthine hallways of the hospital. I question the difference between my present position and that of a medical student. I quickly come to the realization that title means nothing without experience.

1850 - 1945 hours: Evening sets in at the hospital. I sit down at a resident-designated computer to document my patient encounters. As I write my notes, I am amazed at the actual work that has been done. Besides ensuring that my patients were well-nourished using all the juice that I could pillage, I was able to independently examine my patients, answer their questions of care (with the help of my senior residents) and establish what I hope to be an enduring and meaningful relationship throughout their hospital stay.

2000 hours: I return to my apartment, toss my bag in the nearest corner, and head straight toward the mirror. I look directly at my reflection and greet myself. "Hello Dr. Secemsky." I turn around to enjoy the rest of my evening before the coming workday.

* The patient's name in this piece was changed in order to maintain confidentiality. Many of the details above were an exaggeration if not a complete fabrication of the days' events. The first real day on the job was such a wonderfully normal day that it does not merit publication.

Texas' Josh Hamilton to be focus of biopic

Hamilton on film

Josh Hamilton's life reads like a movie script and, sure enough, a film about the Texas Rangers slugger is in the planning stages.

Hamilton has given rights to producer Basil Iwanyk and Thunder Road Pictures for a movie to be written and directed by Casey Affleck, the entertainment website Deadline.com reported.

Hamilton, of course, battled back from drug and alcohol abuse to become a star with the Rangers, and he won the American League most-valuable-player award in 2010.

He's hot again this year, ranking among the AL leaders in home runs and runs batted in. On May 8, he hit four home runs in Baltimore, becoming only the 16th player in history to homer four times in a game.

Hamilton's life "is an extraordinary odyssey," one that took him from addiction and estrangement from his family "to a spectacular rebirth of his life, faith, marriage and major-league career," Deadline.com quoted Iwanyk as saying.

Now the question is: Which actor could play the 31-year-old Hamilton, who is 6 feet 4 and weighs about 240 pounds?

Dickey forecast

The amazing run of knuckleball pitcher R.A. Dickey has sparked a torrent of commentary, including this query: If Dickey leads his New York Mets to the playoffs, would he still be effective in colder weather?

The theory is that knuckleball pitchers tend to lose their feel for the baseball when temperatures drop. But a glance at past knuckleballers indicates that might not be true.

Tim Wakefield was 33-36 during his career in June, according to a monthly breakdown by Baseball-Reference.com. The website lumps September and October together, and in that period Wakefield was 33-33.

Phil Niekro ("Knucksie") was 58-43 in June and 50-47 in the September/October period. Hoyt Wilhelm was 21-29 in June and 36-14 in September/October.

September can be plenty warm, of course, so that might skew the September/October figures away from the effect of cold days in October.

In any case, the World Series this year doesn't start until Oct. 24, by which time Dickey and the Mets ? if they get that far ? might have those hand warmers ready just in case.

Dickey is 11-1 with a 2.00 earned-run average and has won his last nine decisions. He's scheduled to start again Sunday against the New York Yankees.

Dickson shines

O'Koyea Dickson, a first baseman with the Dodgers' Class-A Great Lakes (Michigan) team, went two for three with a two-run home run to help the East win, 18-2, in the Midwest LeagueAll-Star game.

The San Francisco native, selected by the Dodgers in the 12th round of the first-year draft in 2011, was batting .331 with six home runs in 39 games for the Great Lakes Loons before the break.

Google's Hybrid Approach to Research

In this viewpoint, we describe how we organize computer science research at Google. We focus on how we integrate research and development and discuss the benefits and risks of our approach. The challenge in organizing R&D is great because CS is an increasingly broad and diverse field. It combines aspects of mathematical reasoning, engineering methodology, and the empirical approaches of the scientific method. The empirical components are clearly on the upswing, in part because the computer systems we construct have become so large that analytic techniques cannot properly describe their properties, because the systems now dynamically adjust to the difficult-to-predict needs of a diverse user community, and because the systems can learn from vast datasets and large numbers of interactive sessions that provide continuous feedback.

We have also noted that CS is an expanding sphere, where the core of the field (theory, operating systems, and so forth) continues to grow in depth, while the field keeps expanding into neighboring application areas. Research results come not only from universities, but also from companies, both large and small. The way research results are disseminated is also evolving and the peer-reviewed paper is under threat as the dominant dissemination method. Open source releases, standards specifications, data releases, and novel commercial systems that set new standards upon which others then build are increasingly important.

To compare our approach to research with that of other companies is beyond the scope of this Viewpoint. But, for reference, we note that in the terminology of Pasteur's Quadrant,11 we do "use-inspired basic" and "pure applied" (CS) research. Buderi2 and Dodgson et al.5 discuss information technology research generally, pointing out the movement in industrial labs toward research that strongly considers product needs. Recent articles, such as those by Leifer et al.8 and Enkel et al.,6 illustrate related issues on how firms do research and catalyze innovation.

The goal of research at Google is to bring significant, practical benefits to our users, and to do so rapidly, within a few years at most. Research happens throughout Google, exploring technical innovations whose implementation is risky, and may well fail. Sometimes, research at Google operates in entirely new spaces, but most frequently, the goals are major advances in areas where the bar is already high, but there is still potential for new methods. In these cases, simply establishing the feasibility of a research idea may be a substantial task, but even greater effort is required to create a true success or useful negative result.

Because of the time frame and effort involved, Google's approach to research is iterative and usually involves writing production, or near-production, code from day one. Elaborate research prototypes are rarely created, since their development delays the launch of improved end-user services. Typically, a single team iteratively explores fundamental research ideas, develops and maintains the software, and helps operate the resulting Google services?all driven by real-world experience and concrete data. This long-term engagement serves to eliminate most risk to technology transfer from research to engineering. This approach also helps ensure the research efforts produce results that benefit Google's users, by allowing research ideas and implementations to be honed on empirical data and real-world constraints, and by utilizing even failed efforts to gather valuable data and statistics for further attempts.

Implications of Google's Mission and Capabilities

Google's mission "To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," both supports and requires innovation in almost all CS disciplines. For example, we aim to "understand" user intent and the meaning of documents, to translate between languages with everhigher fidelity, and to be able to transform content in one modality (say, image) into relevant content in all others (say, text). Google's entire organization is focused on rapid innovation, and three aspects of Google's technology and business model support this:

  • Organizing all of the world's information requires large amounts of resources. By providing a rich set of computing abstractions and powerful processors, storage, and networking capabilities in our data centers, Google has been able to gain economies of scale and to sidestep some of the complexity of heterogeneous computing environments.
  • The services-based delivery model brings significant benefits to research and development. Even a small team has at its disposal the power of many internal services, allowing the team to quickly create complex and powerful products and services. Design, testing, production, and maintenance processes are simplified. Additionally, the services model, particularly one where there is significant consumer engagement, facilitates empirical research.
  • Google has been able to hire a talented team across the entire engineering operation. This gives us the opportunity to innovate everywhere, and for people to move between projects, whether they be primarily research or primarily engineering.

Hybrid Research at Google

Google's focus on innovation, its services model, its large user community, its talented team, and the evolutionary nature of CS research has led Google to a "Hybrid Research Model." In this model, we blur the line between research and engineering activities and encourage teams to pursue the right balance of each, knowing that this balance varies greatly. We also maintain considerable fluidity in terms of moving both people and projects as needs change. As such, even in areas where there is a much higher proportion of research to engineering, the "Research Team" we have established is not as formally separate from engineering activities as those in other organizations, and for example runs large production systems, too. Overall, we undertake research work when we feel its substantially higher risk is warranted by a chance of more significant potential impact. Additionally, research also has the potential to impact the world both through Google's products and services, and through the academic research community. We recognize that the wide dissemination of fundamental results often benefits us by garnering valuable feedback, educating future hires, providing collaborations, and seeding additional work.

Google's approach to research is iterative and usually involves writing production, or near-production, code from day one.

In no way do we feel our model precludes long-term research: we just try to "factorize" it into shorter-term, measurable components. This provides benefits to us in terms of team motivation (based upon evidence of concrete progress in reasonable time periods) and the potential for commercial benefit (in advance of the complete fulfillment of all objectives). Even if we cannot fully factorize work, we have sometimes undertaken longer-term efforts. For example, we have started multiyear, large systems efforts (including Google Translate, Chrome, Google Health) that have important research components. These projects were characterized by the need for complex systems and research (such as Web-scale identification of parallel corpora for Translate12 and various complex security features in Chrome9 and Health). At the same time, we have recently shown that even in longer-term, publicly launched efforts, we are unafraid to refocus our work (for example, Google Health), if it seems we are not achieving success.

Clearly, this approach benefits from the mainly evolutionary nature of CS research, where great results are usually the composition of many discrete steps. If the discrete steps required large leaps in vastly different directions, we admit that our primarily hill-climbing-based approach might fail. Thus, we have structured the Google environment as one where new ideas can be rapidly verified by small teams through large-scale experiments on real data, rather than just debated. The small-team approach benefits from the services model, which enables a few engineers to create new systems and put them in front of users. This in turn enables us to conduct experiments at a scale that is generally unprecedented for research and development projects. One consequence is that many projects can directly affect billions of users. This naturally influences how researchers choose to spend their time, balancing the opportunity to have impact through Google's services with the opportunity to have impact in the academic community. Google encourages both kinds of impact, and some of the most successful projects achieve both.

Our hybrid approach to research enables us to conduct experiments at a scale that is generally unprecedented for research projects.

We thus define our hybrid research model as one that aims to generate scientific and engineering advances in fields of import to Google; that does so in a way that tends to factorize longer projects (perhaps with very challenging goals) into discrete, achievable steps (each of which may be of commercial value); where we maximally leverage our cloud computing models and large user base to support in vivo research; where we allow for the maximal amount of organizational flexibility so we can support both projects that require some room to grow unfettered by current constraints and projects that require close integration with existing products; and where we emphasize knowledge dissemination using a flexible collection of different approaches.

Example Research Patterns

  1. An advanced project in a product-focused team that, by virtue of its creativity and newness, changes the state of the art and thereby produces new research results. The first and most prevalent pattern exemplifies how blurry the line between research and development work can be. Operating at large scale, engineering teams are often faced with novel challenges which, when overcome, constitute research results. Organizationally, research is done in situ by the product team to achieve its goals. The most successful high-profile examples of this pattern are systems infrastructure projects such as MapReduce,4 Google File System,7 and BigTable.3
  2. A project in the research group that results in new products or services. The second pattern is research followed by the operation of the production service based on that research. Both Google Translate and Voice Search10 are examples of this pattern, where the cloud computing infrastructure enabled small research teams to build systems that could be deployed. This pattern applies best when continuing research can further improve and extend the resulting products.
  3. A project in the research group that creates new concepts and technologies, which are then applied to existing products or services. The third pattern is a traditional research and development model. Google's success with this model of research benefits from the services model and from the emphasis on data-driven evaluation. For instance, some new audio and video fingerprinting techniques,1 which researchers were able to demonstrate not only on small test cases, but on real data at production scale, were then productized by YouTube engineers.
  4. A joint research project between an engineering team and the research group that is then used by that engineering team. The fourth pattern is a collaborative integration of research and development teams. Many of our products require novel algorithmic solutions to support high performance, thus posing a blend of research and engineering challenges. An example for this pattern is the work done by our Market Algorithms group in collaboration with teams working on our advertisement systems. Together, they design, modify, and analyze the core algorithms and economic mechanisms used for ad selection and optimization.
  5. A research project in an engineering team that is transitioned to the research group (and eventually becomes (2.), (3.), or (4.) here). The fifth pattern, transitioning a project from an engineering team to the research team is an important mechanism for giving a project more time or resources, when the work is important more broadly than for a specific engineering team. An example of this pattern is work on YouTube recommendations, which started in various engineering groups, but then moved to a research team, where the work continued using a different, and perhaps deeper, algorithmic basis.

Successes

In the same way that it is difficult to define what exactly constitutes "research," it can be difficult to measure its "success." In our opinion, a research project is successful if it has academic or commercial impact, or ideally, both. Commercial impact at Google is perhaps easier to measure, and the company has benefitted from numerous advances in systems, speech recognition, language translation, machine learning, market algorithms, computer vision, and more.

By academic impact we refer to impact on the academic community, other companies or industries, and the field of computer science in general. Of course, this type of impact has most traditionally come from publications, and Google continues to publish research results at increasing rates (from 13 papers published in 2003, to 130 in 2006, to 279 in 2011). Some of our papers are highly regarded and have been extensively cited.3,4,7 But we feel that publications are by no means the only mechanism for knowledge dissemination: Googlers have led the creation of over 1,000 open source projects, contributed to various standards (for example, as editor of HTML5), and produced hundreds of public APIs for accessing our services. In some cases, we have used these different channels in symbiotic ways, following up an initial publication describing the high-level ideas (MapReduce, GFS, BigTable) with open source implementations of particular aspects (Protocol Buffers). In other cases, projects have started as open source initiatives from day one: Android and Chromium are probably the two most well-known examples of open source projects and demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Discussion

Technology companies invest in research for a number of reasons, including: importance to the company's products and services, prestige and contributions to the public good, and reducing the risk of getting blindsided by new technology developments.

Research at Google is built on the premise that connecting research with development provides teams with powerful, production-quality infrastructure and a large user base, resulting not only in innovative research, but also in valuable new commercial capabilities. By coupling research and development, our goal is to minimize or even eliminate the traditional technology transfer process, which has proven challenging at other companies. Most of our projects involve people working with a given technology from the research stage through to the product stage. This close collaboration and integration furthermore ensures the reality of the problems being investigated: research is conducted on real systems and with real users. Our flexible organization also provides diverse opportunities for our employees and has positive implications for our innovation culture and hiring ability.

Of course, this close integration also brings some risks with it. Being so close to the users and to the day-to-day activities of product teams, it is easy to get drawn in and miss new developments. To mitigate this risk, we engage with the academic community through various initiatives such as our visiting faculty program, our intern program or our faculty research awards program. We also encourage publication of research results, though we sometimes get criticized for not publishing enough. One reason for this is that researchers at Google have multiple avenues for having impact, publishing papers not being the only method. As a result, Googlers publish fewer papers, but the ones they publish can be more impactful, because they describe experience with well-tested and implemented systems, not just proposed ideas. Another potential pitfall of the hybrid research model is that it is probably more conducive to incremental research. We therefore do support paradigmatic changes as well, as exemplified by our autonomous vehicles project, Google Chauffeur, among others.

Conclusion

Many of the world's computer science research questions are of great relevance to Google's business, our technical leaders, and our user community. We have chosen to organize computer science research differently at Google by maximally connecting research and development. This yields not only innovative research results and new technologies, but also valuable new capabilities for the company. Our hybrid approach to research enables us to conduct experiments at a scale that is generally unprecedented for research projects, generating stronger research results that can have a wider academic and commercial impact. We also provide flexible opportunities across the R&D spectrum for our team members. While our hybrid research model exploits a number of things particular to Google, we hypothesize that it may also serve as an interesting model for other technology companies.

"We have also noted that CS is an expanding sphere, where the core of the field (theory, operating systems, and so forth) continues to grow in depth, while the field keeps expanding into neighboring application areas." In my humble opinion a straight line would be the a better geometrical entity to model this phenomenon than a sphere...
