US stock markets to reopen Wednesday after storm

REUTERS - Major U.S. stock exchanges expect to reopen on Wednesday after Sandy, the worst storm to hit New York in nearly 75 years, closed trading for two days.

NYSE Euronext said the New York Stock Exchange would open as usual, although it was prepared to switch to fully electronic trading if necessary. Nasdaq OMX's Nasdaq Stock Market was also to be operating on Wednesday, as were BATS and Direct Edge Exchanges.

"We have a green light," the chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, Larry Leibowitz, said in an interview.

All of the U.S. stock market operators took part in coordinated testing on Tuesday for trading on NYSE's backup system, should it need to be used. The exercise was also aimed at allowing member trading firms, many of which are operating on backup systems themselves due to complications from the storm, an opportunity to make sure they are ready for Wednesday.

At least 30 people were killed and millions have been left without power after Sandy slammed into the East Coast on Monday. The storm shut down most businesses in Manhattan and caused a rare flooding of the subway tunnels, which is expected to keep the system closed for several days.

U.S. exchanges originally had planned to open markets on Monday, but they eventually responded to pressure from firms worried about employee safety, as well as the inability to see markets function effectively at light staffing. It was the first time in 27 years that exchanges closed because of bad weather.

Banks, brokers and others conferred for hours on Tuesday about the feasibility of resuming trade. The storm was expected to result in tens of millions of dollars a day in lost revenue for exchanges and banks, analysts said.

After two days of closure that occurred during the busy corporate earnings season and at the end of the fiscal year for certain funds, trading is likely to be volatile.

"At least in the early trade I expect an overreaction regardless of the direction. I expect to see a lot of volume at least in the first hour," said Art Hogan, managing director of Lazard Capital Markets in New York.

The NYSE, which accounts for about a quarter of U.S. stock market trading volume, tested the possibility of routing trades through its electronic platform, Leibowitz said. Under normal conditions it handles about half its volume through its trading floor at 11 Wall Street, where traders and specialists buy and sell stocks in person.

Many of NYSE's member trading firms including the top 25, which make up more than 90 percent of volume on the exchange, took part in the tests, Leibowitz said.

"Tomorrow will not be without hiccups, but will be good enough that the market will be fine," he said.

The NYSE had said on Sunday afternoon it planned to close its trading floor and to move all trading to its electronic market. It backtracked on that idea after traders and regulators expressed concern - given the difficulties and low staffing levels due to the storm - about moving everything to the all-electronic venue, a plan tested on March 31 but never used live.

An industrywide testing session was held in the morning. Rival exchange Nasdaq also conducted its own tests, as did BATS, the No. 3 U.S. equities exchange.

There were some issues at the beginning of the BATS tests, mostly related to members having trouble getting into Manhattan due to flooding and transportation problems, but those issues were resolved by midday, said Chris Isaacson, BATS' COO.

"The majority of our members connected today," he said.

The industry also tested things like volatility trading pauses to handle any abnormal volatility in securities, including NYSE-listed securities, he said.

"I expect normal trading tomorrow," said Isaacson.

Bond markets were also closed on Tuesday. Financial industry trade group SIFMA said it is recommending the market reopen on Wednesday.

September 2001 was the last extended period of time that exchanges closed. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq closed on September 11, a Tuesday, after the World Trade Center attacks and did not reopen until six days later, on September 17, the following Monday.

"It would be unprecedented to have three days of closure from a weather-related emergency, and the greater point is that American markets do not want to be perceived as anything other than reliable," said Mike Shea, managing partner and trader at Direct Access Partners LLC in New York.

"That's really the issue. An emergency like September 11 was different."

Kenneth Polcari, long-time floor trader at the NYSE, said he was still waiting to hear how the exchange would get the direct market-makers - the specialists who facilitate buy and sell orders - to the floor.

"If they aren't there and they still trade, then there is no reason for them to have those guys at all," he said.

Leibowitz said there was no plan to end floor trading at NYSE. "We think there is a role for people and judgment and responsibility. Just because you can run with technology alone doesn't mean it's the best way to run."

Recent high-profile technical snafus like the glitch that prevented BATS' market debut on its own exchange, Facebook's botched IPO on Nasdaq, and Knight Capital Group's near-fatal trading glitch have increased scrutiny of electronic trading. Nasdaq, BATS and Direct Edge are fully electronic.

MANY BANKS OPENING, SLOWLY

Plans to resume trading will be complicated by the lingering effect of the storm on New York. Sandy brought a record storm surge that flooded subway tunnels, and subway service is not likely to resume for four to five days, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Tuesday.

JPMorgan Chase & Co , the largest U.S. bank, expects many employees will be able to return to buildings starting on Wednesday, according to an internal memo obtained by Reuters.

One of Citigroup's main investment banking buildings, at 388 Greenwich Street in Manhattan near the Hudson River, had minor flooding, and was without power, an internal memo said. A smaller Citigroup building also by the Hudson River was running on a generator. The bank expects both to be accessible within two days.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc's offices in Lower Manhattan and Jersey City, New Jersey, on opposite sides of the Hudson River, were not open on Tuesday, and by early afternoon the bank was still not sure whether they would open on Wednesday, after sustaining minor amounts of flooding.

Morgan Stanley , whose headquarters is in the less-affected Times Square area, said it expects to be open for business and functioning when U.S. markets open.

Both banks had other offices open for employees to work from outside New York City through the hurricane, as well as remote access for many of their staff.

POTENTIAL FOR VOLATILITY

When markets do open Wednesday, it could come with a burst of volatility after a two-day shutdown in the middle of earnings season and just days before the November 6 U.S. presidential election. Undoubtedly, some investors will try to game out what sectors and stocks will be helped or hindered by the storm, but the broader economic effect should be limited.

"You have earnings, a heavy economic data calendar, the election cycle, it's a catalyst-rich market sitting idle for a few days and there could be an unusual reaction. We have to get through the first hour and see where the chips fall after that," said Hogan at Lazard Capital.

Some companies, including Pfizer Inc , the largest U.S. drug maker, delayed the release of results until the storm passed, but others released theirs on schedule.

Tim Ralph, a money manager at Biltmore Capital in Princeton, New Jersey, said utilities and casino companies will take financial hits from the storm, noting in particular the level of overtime that the utilities will be paying out as they deal with downed lines and power outages.

He expects shares of Verizon , Comcast and Consolidated Edison to fall sharply once trading resumes.

Brian Gendreau, market strategist with Cetera Financial Group, said markets tend to rebound to their previous levels within five days after natural disasters.

"The U.S. is a very big economy, and while the magnitude of this storm could be in the billions it's actually very small in relation to GDP," he said.

Because Wednesday is also the end of the fiscal year for some mutual funds, there could be some volatility in markets as mutual funds sell underperformers by the end of trading on that day in order to avoid taxes on some of their portfolio gains.

Eric Marshall, who co-manages five mutual funds at Hodges Capital in Dallas, said his firm is moving all of the selling it had planned to do Monday and Tuesday to Wednesday.

"This is going to drive volatility on top of what we're already expecting from the aftermath of the storm," he said. Android apps for improving women?s health

It?s important for everyone to strive for a healthy lifestyle, but we all have our special needs. Women in particular have different health goals than men, as age and dietary needs also play a role. Fortunately for the modern woman, we have countless resources at hand, many available as Android apps. Here?s a few that address fitness, breast cancer, health education, stress reduction and more.

Shopping for groceries can sometimes feel like a doctoral-level research study, reading labels for nutritional facts and ingredients, comparing each aisle?s products. The pressure is compounded for someone using a highly disciplined service like Weight Watchers. Thankfully Weight Watchers has a barcode-scanning Android app that gives you all the information you need for your personal goals. Check grocery items against Weight Watchers? database, add it to your PointsPlus Tracker or your Favorites. You can even scan multiple products for comparisons, access your scanned history and use the PointPlus calculator right from the app. You?ll need to be an existing subscriber to Weight Watchers Online to use the full features of this app.

Not many women?s health magazines have an Android presence, but Women?s Health was an early supporter of mobile apps. With Women?s Health Workouts you get the sleekly designed programs the print publication is known for, in a convenient mobile package. You?ll receive step-by-step workouts developed by top female trainers and experts, shareable training logs and timers, all designed to optimize your exercise goals. The app also comes with built-in support to request expert guidance. Get the pro version for full-featured access to workout plans.

Women take on a great responsibility in caring for their families, often combined with the added pressure of a career. Stay stress free throughout your busy day with Meditation Oasis? app, called Take a Break from Stress. This voice-guided app comes with two programs - one for a seven-minute break, and the other for 13 minutes. You can listen with or without music, turn off the voice guide, and practice your stress reduction techniques to keep you sane throughout the day. After a while, you may be able to skip the app all together.

Yoga is another great way to relax the mind, body and spirit while improving blood circulation and toning muscles. A popular program for women, yoga is a great opportunity to take some time for yourself to do something that has long-lasting benefits for your overall health. The All-in YOGA app for Android comes with over 300 poses, complete with instructions and photos. There?s a video and voice-guided option, as well as the ability to create custom programs with the dozens of yoga poses available in this app. And don?t worry about getting ahead of yourself with this yoga trainer--poses are grouped according to level and type (strong abs, breathing or stretching exercises, to name a few), so you can work your way up to the hard stuff. The app comes with music if you don?t have any of your own, with 40 programs to choose from. Track your progress on a calendar, see 3D views of poses, and cool down when you?re done.

Breast cancer is a disease that affects many of us in one way or another, becoming a foremost important health concern for every woman you know. Self-examination is key to women?s health, and the Pink Link app offers a guide on how to conduct a breast self-exam. The app also lets you schedule reminders for yearly mammograms and monthly self-exams, and provides information on breast cancer screening guidelines. Pink Link is an app released by Mount Carmel, a women?s health center in Central Ohio, so if you live in the region you can also use the app to contact nearby centers. For a more general app on self-exam techniques, try Breast Test.

If you take oral contraceptives daily, you know the importance of staying on track with your pills. The My Pill app lets you set an alarm to ring daily, pausing automatically between cycles. You don?t have to do much manual work with this app--even when you reboot the app, it will reset its schedule. Alarm tones are customizable, and can be set to vibrate. This Android app will also track the number of pills remaining in your pack, and available in English and French.

Pregnancy is unique to women, and requires a great deal of attention, time and care. Simplify some of the processes around tracking your pregnancy with the Baby Bump app for Android, considered one of the most inclusive apps of its kind. View schematic embryo pictures of baby development week-by-week, along with common symptoms, cravings and bodily changes you can expect throughout the pregnancy. The app comes with a journal and a weight-tracker, so you?ll have a database to take to doctor?s visits. Your progress can also be charted for weight gain, BMI and low/high estimates against your actual weight on a weekly basis. There?s a social component for sharing pregnancy stories, a countdown widget for your homescreen, and a contraction tracker with a start/stop button when the big day arrives.

Former Tulsa church worker pleads guilty to rape

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? A former employee of a Tulsa megachurch accused of raping a 13-year-old girl pleaded guilty Monday to six sex-crime charges.

Chris Denman, 20, faces up to life in prison after entering the plea. He is due in court Dec. 12 for sentencing.

Denman was accused in August of raping the girl on the campus of Victory Christian Center, a megachurch that has 17,000 members. Denman was also charged with molesting a 15-year-old girl and making a lewd proposal to a 12-year-old girl.

He pleaded guilty Monday to all charges filed against him: first-degree rape, forcible oral sodomy of a child, lewd molestation, lewd proposal to a child and two counts of using a computer to facilitate a sex crime.

Attorneys said Denman's plea was not a result of an agreement with prosecutors, who plan to call an "aggravation hearing" at his sentencing to demonstrate the need for a tough sentence.

Denman told a judge at Monday's hearing that he made the decision on his own to accept the plea deal.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys weren't immediately available for comment.

Five employees of the church also face misdemeanor charges for allegedly waiting two weeks to report the alleged rape. They have pleaded not guilty and are due in court Wednesday.

The 13-year-old's mother has sued the church seeking more than $75,000. She claims the church sought "damage control" rather than pursuing the case properly.

Microsoft Releases Windows Phone 8 SDK

windowsphone_symbol_clr_56x56Microsoft has released the Windows Phone 8 SDK for the Build developer conference, now taking place on the Redmond campus. The SDK is described as an environment “for building apps and games for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.5.” That’s pretty obvious but why 7.5? That’s the odd thing here. It has a stand-alone Visual Studio Express 2012 edition. It can also work as an add-on to Visual Studio?Express 2012 edition for Windows Phone or works as an add-in to Visual Studio 2012 Professional, Premium or Ultimate editions. Microsoft says the SDK also includes emulators and additional tools for profiling and testing a Windows Phone app under real-world conditions. Here are the system requirements from the site: Supported operating systems:?Windows 8, Windows 8 P Windows 8 64-bit (x64) client versions Hardware: 4 GB of free hard disk space 4 GB RAM 64-bit (x64) CPU Windows Phone 8 Emulator: Windows 8 Pro edition or greater Requires a processor that supports Second Level Address Translation (SLAT) RedMonk analyst Donnie Berkholz, here at Build said this to me about the SDK: Windows Phone 8 now provides an end-user experience on par with iOS and Android. The public release of the developer SDK finally makes it possible to nail a critical component of mobile adoption, the broader app ecosystem. Unfortunately the SDK wasn?t released in advance of Windows Phone 8 so developers could have apps available at the release, which will hurt both developers and Microsoft because of the importance first impressions have to consumers. Given Microsoft?s near-legendary tenacity and its clear understanding of the importance of mobile devices, I expect they?ll continue pursuing this until they get it right — if not for Windows Phone 8, for the next release.

Hybrids and Electric Vehicles Do Well in Reliability Survey ...

Hybrid vehicles, and those powered by electricity in one form or another, have good predicted reliability in the Consumer Reports 2012 Annual Auto Reliability Survey.

The survey predicts the reliability of 2013 models based on tracking of the reliability of vehicles up to 10 years old.

This year?s analysis is based on data from 1.2 million 2003-12 model-year vehicles leased or owned by Consumer Reports subscribers.

Magazine editors noted that reliability is a high point this year for all hybrids but the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It was the only one that had a worse-than-average rating for predicted reliability.

The Toyota Prius, the Prius V (the larger hatchback Prius) and the new Prius Plug-in were all above average in predicted reliability.

The Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid, also has above-average predicted reliability.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf has above-average predicted reliability, and the editors said it was the Nissan model with the best predicted reliability.

?There?s no rocket science to electric cars,? said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports. ?There were electric cars before there were gas-powered cars; it seems to be a reliable technology.?

And despite dire predictions about the longevity of nickel-metal hydride batteries and the high cost of replacing them in hybrid vehicles, there have been few problems.

?We?ve got Priuses out there with 200,000 miles on them and 12 years in service,? and if a battery has a problem, it is very inexpensive to fix, Mr. Fisher said.

?So the whole thing about the sky falling and the $10,000 battery hasn?t happened,? he said.

The jury is still out, however, on the longevity of the new lithium-ion batteries that power the Leaf, Volt and Prius Plug-in, he said.

Subscribers can view the survey results at the Consumer Reports Web site. Nonsubscribers will be able to get access to a preview of the survey there. The complete survey will appear in the December issue of the magazine, which goes on sale Nov. 6.

Crane dangling from NYC high-rise

NEW YORK (AP) ? A construction crane atop a $1.5 billion luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan collapsed in high winds Monday and dangled precariously, prompting plans for engineers and inspectors to climb 74 flights of stairs to examine it as a huge storm bore down on the city.

The harrowing inspection task was being undertaken by experts who are "the best of the best," city Buildings Department spokesman Tony Sclafani said

Some buildings were being evacuated as a precaution and the streets below were cleared, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Authorities received a call about at around 2 p.m. as conditions worsened from the approaching Hurricane Sandy. Meteorologists said winds atop the building could have been close to 95 mph at the time.

The nearly completed high-rise is known as One57 and is in one of the city's most desirable neighborhoods, near Carnegie Hall, Columbus Circle and Central Park.

The New York Times recently called it a "global billionaires' club" because the nine full-floor apartments near the top have all been sold to billionaires. Among them are two duplexes under contract for more than $90 million each.

Shannon Kaye, 96, lives in the building next door.

"We heard a noise, but we didn't know what it was," she said. Minutes later, she and her neighbors were told to leave.

"I never liked that building, looking down into my bedroom," she said. "I always had the feeling that something would come falling down from it."

The Buildings Department had suspended work at the building at 5 p.m. Saturday. It reminded contractors and property owners across the city to secure construction sites and buildings.

Construction cranes have been a source of safety worries in the city since two giant rigs collapsed within two months of each other in Manhattan in 2008, killing a total of nine people.

Those accidents spurred the resignation of the city's buildings commissioner and fueled new safety measures, including hiring more inspectors and expanding training requirements and inspection checklists.

Another crane fell and killed a worker this April at a construction site for a new subway line. That rig was exempt from most city construction safety rules because it was working for a state-overseen agency that runs the subway system.

Like Monday's accident, one of the 2008 crane collapses also centered on the rig's long, mobile arm, known as a boom. In the May 2008 accident, the boom broke off a roughly 200-foot-tall rig, crashed into a nearby building and plummeted to the ground.

Prosecutors blamed that collapse on what they called a penny-pinching repair to a crucial component that lets the boom swivel. Lawyers for that crane's owner, who ultimately was acquitted of manslaughter charges, said the operator made a mistake that tipped the boom over backward and snapped it.

When, how, and why our society began to celebrate the - LSE Blogs

Heterosexuality is celebrated ? in film and television, in pop songs and opera, in literature and on greeting cards ? and at the same time it is taken for granted. It is the cultural and sexual norm by default. And yet, as?Louis-Georges Tin?shows in?The Invention of Heterosexual Culture, in pre-modern Europe heterosexuality was perceived as an alternative culture. The practice of heterosexuality may have been standard, but the symbolic primacy of the heterosexual couple was not.?Sarah Burton?commends the author for his strong and methodologically original addition to the field of sexuality studies.

The Invention of Heterosexual Culture. Louis-Georges Tin. MIT Press.?September 2012.

Find this book:?

Louis-George Tin begins his book by making the bold claim that to truly grasp the nature of heterosexuality requires ?nothing less than an epistemological revolution? (xi).?The Invention of Heterosexual Culture?thus explores ?when, how and why our society began to celebrate the heterosexual couple? (xi). Through a focus on various historical oppositions to heterosexuality ? chivalric, ecclesiastical and medical ? Tin provides a close reading of literature to explore the social and cultural shifts that altered the place of heterosexual culture in Western society, from initial concealment to growing supremacy. Setting out from a perspective which claims heterosexuality as a ?blind spot? which being ?assumed to be ever-present as a matter of course and has escaped analysis as if transparent to itself? (vii) and tracking cultural changes from the medieval period to the twentieth century, Tin seeks to negotiate why and how heterosexuality moved from a mere also-ran to the dominant mode of sexual behaviour.

Tin begins from a convincing theoretical position ? there is certainly far less scholarship exploring heterosexuality than the pantheon of queer sexuality that is taken to be the ?other? and, the historical perspective provides a much needed addition to the field.

Tin begins by exploring the chivalric opposition to heterosexuality ? that is the resistance and reluctance of feudal society to privilege female-male sexual love above male-male homosocial love as the ordering system of the culture. Asserting that the original feudal culture pre-twelfth century was ?removed from that of womankind? (p. 2) Tin explores the phenomenon of male-male love in early medieval poetry such as?Le Chanson de Roland?and reflects on the manner in which ? retrospectively ? poetry has been taught and consumed in such a way to over-emphasize opposite sex relationships (p. 6). Throughout the section Tin draws distinction between homosexuality (as constituting a physical act) and homosociality, which he claims ? via the intimate friendships formed by knights of the court ? dominated medieval society as the principal form and understanding of the concept of love. Acknowledging that in terms of marriage and sexual behaviour opposite sex relationships were still the norm at this time, Tin?s real argument seems to be about the conception of love in Western society and how that is experienced and presented, rather than the actual sexual relationships and behaviour taking place. Indeed, Tin makes some curious claims regarding the position of women in the culture of courtly love which superseded the homosocial feudal society, writing that it featured ?essentially asymmetric relationships where the female was the dominant figure? (p. 15) and frames the shift from the ascendancy of homosocial knight-lead love to heterosexual love as pivoting on the confrontation between a new female-controlled world and the original male dominated order. Of course, the courtly love tradition?did?place women in authority regarding love and sex, but Tin appears to forget that it was?men?writing the love poems of the age and disregards the deeply precarious nature of female power.

Section Two opens with Tin identifying a ?crisis of gender? ensuing from the emerging heterosexual culture as a result of the ?intrusion of femininity into feudal society? (p. 51). He focuses in this section on the changing relationship between the Church and heterosexual relations. Bringing to the fore the medieval Church?s position as based on a virgin birth and celibate child and disciples who were encouraged to leave their wives, Tin asserts that ?the notion of man-woman relationships was a priori incompatible with Christian experience? (p. 53). In doing so Tin again opens questions of what it actually is that feudalism, the church and the medical establishment were opposed to: opposite sex relationships and love or opposite sex sexual practices? Tin?s focus throughout is on the relationship/love angle and he pays curiously little attention to sex drives or desires. Recognizing that ?[p]rofane heterosexual love was?tolerated on the assumption that it was chaste (that is, conjugal)? (p. 71) seems to demonstrate that it was not in fact the opposite sex nature of love that the Church opposed but rather the lustful, carnal aspect. Given that, by this point, sodomy was also a capital offense (p. 27), it could be argued that ?counter to Tin?s presentation ? the opposition formed by Church, state and science was to sex, in all its forms, and not to heterosexual?culture.

The final section details the opposition from medicine to the ?cult of heterosexual love? (p. 113) with Tin basing his argument on contemporary evidence showing the medical profession?s position that ?undue preoccupation with love and passion were a sociopathological condition? (p. 113). Tin examines closely the physical conditions that were thought to result from falling in love (including one?s blood boiling) and follows this by scrutinizing the concepts of erotic melancholy and feminine hysteria. In doing so the book begins to repeat current scholarship but the connection Tin provides between medical arguments for treating hysteria with orgasm and the contemporary love poetry written delivers a novel twist to well-worn ground. Ending with the claim that heterosexuality is a performed identity that constrains those who fall under it as much as those who lie outside, Tin posits the notion that heterosexual culture may be under threat ?in and of itself as a hegemonic system? (p. 152). He links this to advances in reproductive technologies and prevalence of non-reproductive sex practices and concludes that as the gap widens between heterosexual sex and reproduction, the dominance of heterosexual culture may well decline.

Louis-George Tin has produced a comprehensive social history of the negotiation of gender relationships since the twelfth century. The analysis occasionally suffers from elision between social and sexual behaviour and could sometimes be more precise in its language. Equally the author focuses exclusively on the gentry class of Western society and very often on French literature in particular, prompting questions of how representative his analysis is of regular sexual behaviour. However the task at hand is huge and Tin is to be commended for his strong and methodologically original addition to the field of sexuality studies.

?I think they?re just looking to expand,? said Shane Barker, pre-professional advisor for Fulbright College. ?It?s very preliminary, and I?m trying to help facilitate getting them here on campus.?

A handful of students at the UA are interested in being a part of the founding chapter of DEM, said Michael Dawar, director of expansion and president of the DEM chapter at the University of Kansas.

?I was contacted by students at the university over the summer stating they were interested in starting a chapter of our fraternity at their university,? Dawar said. ?They requested assistance in recruiting members, so I started posting on Facebook pages and groups to gain attention for the group and help them recruit more students.?

The UA would be one of the few DEM fraternities in the Midwest, which would allow students to work with other nearby chapters and get involved on a national level, Dawar said.

?Our fraternity was interested in starting a chapter of our fraternity at Arkansas because we were told there was no other organization of our kind at the school, and that it would help unite students of various health fields under one banner,? Dawar said.

Dawar said he hopes a chapter can be established at the UA by the end of this semester or the beginning of the spring semester.

There are already four registered student organizations on campus for pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, pre-optometry and pre-pharmacy students, but Barker said there were no organizations for students in other popular medical fields such as physical therapy.

?I was looking to do something for them either individually or organizationally,? Barker said. ?It was perfect timing both ways.?

All students are welcome to join DEM even if they are already involved with a pre-heath RSO, Barker said.

?Because we are pre-health, we cover all the different health fields, so members have an opportunity to learn about all the fields and see what will best fit their interests,? Dawar said.

DEM offers professional and personal development workshops, speakers from the health field, community service and volunteer opportunities and extensive networking opportunities across the nation, Dawar said.

?Many of our members are in similar majors and career paths, so they are able to study together and help the younger members with classes they have already taken,? Dawar said.

They also help members with job shadowing, preparing for graduate schools in their field, getting into graduate programs, getting into contact with admissions representatives from schools and visiting schools as a group.

DEM is the only national professional fraternity that is open to both men and women, according to the DEM website.

DEM has 12 chapters and seven colonies on 14 university campuses throughout the country, and it is the fastest growing pre-health professional fraternity in the nation, according to the DEM website.

Students who want to get involved or have questions about DEM can contact Barker at sxb028@uark.edu or Dawar at mdawar@ku.edu.

Shas? solution to the party?s leadership crisis, the forum of three, has earned an envious spot in the weekly chareidi newspapers and magazines in Eretz Yisrael. Shas? own Yom L?Yom does not play modest, allocating significant real estate to tell the story and share the success, including the array of rabbonim whose photo appears alongside their bracha on the success achieved by Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita. The paper actually explains in depth that the credit for saving the party goes to Maran?s youngest son, HaGaon HaRav David Yosef, who heads the gadol hador?s Badatz Beit Yosef.

Rav Moshe?s efforts paid off big time in this case, at least for the time being, and the rabbonim who appear in the party-affiliated newspaper are not just Sephardim but prominent Ashkenazim including the Sanzer Rebbe Shlita, the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yonah Yechiel Metzger.

The Shas success begs the question if the Ashkenazim can achieve the same success, but with growing splits in the litvish and chassidic factions, such a reality appears unlikely at the present time.

Is Politics a religion?

Politicians usually belong to a party that has a set of principles.? These are then used as the basis for policies and each new member must agree that they are in agreement with them.? They are not factual things like being able to speak a particular language, having a level of education, living in certain locations etc - No they are principles, beliefs,? commitments, intentions etc.? I have extracted the principles for Canada's main parties:? ?Conservatives, NDP and Liberals.? (Download a short pdf for each by clicking their names).? It's immediately obvious that these principles are very similar structurally to the dogmas of Churches.? They require belief on Faith although like theology, research is done to justify each belief.? None of this would matter except that people with these dogmas run our country!? If they ignored the dogmas and decided what to do based on reason, evidence and even common sense, then it would not matter what they believed.? Some actions are like that but too many times, dogma is used as the basis for actions.

It's made even worse when dogmas from an MP's personal religion is used as the basis for an action.? This often happens when an issue is unrelated to a political dogma.? For example, gay marriage and abortion are not mentioned in the principles of any Canadian party.

The thought that politics is a form of religion is complicated by the fact that certain religions tend to? be related to political parties.? For example, Conservatives are more likely to be religious (Catholics or fundamentalists) while NDP members have a higher proportion of atheists.? But that's not what I am discussing here.

Let's think about it.? If you belong to a religion and you have a set of dogmas, then when you come to decide something that relates to one of the dogmas, it will decide for you what to do.? For example, Catholics don't think about whether to choose an abortion or not - they know not to have one.? Or at least faithful Catholics are supposed to act that way.? But politicians also have a set of dogmas - when an issue comes up for a decision, they will base their decision on their principles.? They are acting the same way as a religious person.? What they should be doing is deciding each issue on its merits using evidence and reason - not faith.

And it's not just the politicians - their supporters think like that too.? In effect, they have a religion that is what their party preaches.? They could also have a theist religion so would then have two religions - which may or may not conflict!?? Not every supporter accepts all of their party's dogma? - many choose based on the issues for each election.? That's just as well - otherwise we'd never get a change in government.

Let me highlight one "principle" for each Canadian party:

Conservative
A belief that the purpose of Canada as a nation state and its government, guided by reflective and prudent leadership, is to create a climate wherein individual initiative is rewarded, excellence is pursued, security and privacy of the individual is provided and prosperity is guaranteed by a free competitive market economy.

Liberal party
The Liberal Party of Canada is committed to the view that the dignity of each individual man and woman is the cardinal principle of democratic society and the primary purpose of all political organization and activity in such a society.

NDP
That the production and distribution of goods and services shall be directed to meeting the social and individual needs of people within a sustainable environment and economy and not to the making of profit;

So, simplistically, if an MP from each party were to be faced with a decision about the economy, a Conservative would support "a free competitive market economy", a Liberal would support "the dignity of each individual man and woman" (whatever that means) and the NDP would ensure the environment was looked after and no profit was made. In practice, few decisions on the economy can be made based only on these principles - or even all the party's principles.? Like any decision, the facts of the particular case must be known, all the options considered and the best choice made that was right for all those affected.? This requires an approach much like a scientist uses in establishing how things work.? What I'm afraid of is that politicians might use an approach used by religious? people e.g. "What does my religion (dogma) say? Let's do that."? Easy but not based on reason, logic or evidence.

Allan Gregg recently addressed Carlton University on this subject. (Text here - more from Allan in a column in the Toronto Star)? His thesis is that the Harper Government is using their Conservative dogma to make decisions and throwing reason out the window.? My view is that he is biased against Harper but that he has a point.? However, I would be very sure that other politicians would do the same - especially if they had a majority.? I think it's a problem with politicians, not just with Harper.

Viewed from Canada, the U.S. has the same problem but worse - the intransigence of both parties on the "fiscal cliff" issue is based on their ideologies (dogmas).? The solution is to stop treating politics like a religion but that's hard when Americans are so steeped in religion and see strong faith as a virtue.

NYC schools, transit to close ahead of storm

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City announced the closings of its mass transit and school systems, both the nation's largest, and ordered residents to leave some low-lying areas Sunday ahead of the massive storm approaching the eastern third of the U.S.

"You don't want to be overly panicked and overly prepared, but you want to be prudent, you want to do what's necessary," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday in announcing the suspension of the city's subways, buses and commuter trains.

Rainfall is expected to start late Sunday or early Monday in New York. Hurricane Sandy was headed north from the Caribbean to meet both a snowstorm and a cold front, and experts said the rare hybrid storm that results will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. And one expert expressed concern about when the worst of the storm surge would hit: at high tide or at low.

"This will be the crux," said Klaus Jacob, a Columbia University researcher who has advised the city on coastal risks. "If we have bad luck, then it arrives coinciding with high astronomical tides. ... If it arrives at the lower astronomical tides, then we will have lucked out."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he ordered an evacuation of the low-lying areas along the edges of the city including parts of lower Manhattan, sections of Brooklyn and Staten Island, and the Rockaways in Queens.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," he said at a news conference Sunday. "... This is a serious and dangerous storm."

But, he said, those who didn't leave wouldn't be arrested. Ralph Gorham, co-owner of the Red Hook Lobster Pound in Brooklyn's low-lying Red Hook neighborhood, was one of those planned to stay.

"When the bell tolls, you live with it," he said Sunday. He said he had planned ahead and kept from ordering his usual batch of live lobsters from Maine, to diminish possible financial losses.

Gorham also said he was going to the storefront lobster business, usually crowded on weekends with clients, to set up generators and cables to keep the refrigerators and freezers going if power goes out.

If forecasts hold, and especially if the storm surge coincides with high tide, the effects should be much more severe for the city than those in Irene. While the storm may not be the worst-case scenario, Jacob said he expected the subway system, as well as underground electrical systems and neighborhoods in Lower Manhattan, to be at least partially flooded. Many other low-lying areas of the city also face possible inundation, including some industrial waterfront areas where chemicals are stored, he said.

"We have to prepare to the extent we can, but I'm afraid that from a subway point of view, I think it's beyond sheer preparations. I do not think that there's enough emergency measures that will help prevent the subway from flooding," he said Sunday by phone.

The suspension of the city's transit system was the second in two years. Service was also suspended during Tropical Storm Irene last year. With a daily ridership of more than 5 million, New York City's subway system is by far the largest in the U.S., and many New Yorkers do not have cars and depend on subways and buses to get to work, school and around town.

Cuomo said the transit system will be suspended starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, when the last subways and final Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road commuter trains would run. The last buses will run at 9 p.m. He said the decision to shut down the area's bridges and tunnels would be made on a case-by-case basis.

The city's school system, which serves 1.1 million students, will be closed Monday, Bloomberg said. Cuomo also said the National Guard would be deployed, 200 troops in New York City, and 400 on Long Island.

'Argo' finally tops box office with $12.4M

(AP) ? It took three weeks, but "Argo" finally found its way to the top of the box office.

The Warner Bros. thriller from director and star Ben Affleck, inspired by the real-life rescue of six U.S. embassy workers during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, made nearly $12.4 million this weekend, according to Sunday studio estimates. "Argo" had been in second place the past two weeks and has now made about $60.8 million total.

Debuting at No. 3 was the sprawling, star-studded "Cloud Atlas," which made a disappointing $9.4 million. The nearly three-hour drama, also from Warner Bros., was co-directed by siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer and features an ensemble cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant playing multiple roles over six story lines.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., said the studio thought there might be a good chance of "Argo" coming out on top this weekend.

"We're thrilled. An accomplishment like that is well deserved, they don't happen very often. You would probably have to do a lot of searching to find a movie that opened in wide release to have two No. 2 weekends in a row and hit No. 1 in the third week," Fellman said. "It's a tribute to the film. Word-of-mouth has taken over the campaign. We have a long way to go, we have a lot of year-end accolades which will approach, and we'll see what happens in terms of the Academy."

On the flip side, Fellman acknowledged that "Cloud Atlas" underperformed compared to hopes that it would end up in the $11-12 million range domestically. The movie had an estimated budget of $100 million. But he pointed out that it had a higher per-screen average than any other film opening in the top 10 with $4,681.

"We did very well on the East and West coasts in a number of major cities," he said. "We're challenged in the Midwest and the South."

It was a soft weekend all around, though, with several newcomers opening poorly, Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian pointed out. The horror sequel "Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D" from Open Road Films debuted at No. 5 with $8 million and the Paramount Halloween comedy "Fun Size" arrived in 10th place with just over $4 million. "Chasing Mavericks," an inspirational surfing drama from Fox 2000, didn't even open in the top 12 ? it came in at No. 13 with $2.2 million.

The World Series might have been a factor in keeping folks away from the theaters; also, potential moviegoers along the East Coast in the path of Hurricane Sandy might have stayed home this weekend.

"The whole marketplace felt more like September than October. Back in September, we had four down weekends in a row. There was no momentum in the marketplace," Dergarabedian said. "When a holdover is No. 1, it reflects a lack of strength in the marketplace. Every week should have a new movie topping the chart."

As for the philosophical, centuries-spanning "Cloud Atlas," he said: "To have a) a big budget, b) Tom Hanks and c) it's a big, epic film, it doesn't necessarily follow that it's going to be a big box office hit. I admire that they went for it."

But there's hope on the horizon with the animated comedy "Wreck-It Ralph" coming next weekend, the latest James Bond film, "Skyfall," opening Nov. 9 and the final installment in the "Twilight" saga due out Nov. 16. "Skyfall" opened this weekend overseas with a whopping $77.7 million in 25 countries.

"This is just one of those box office weekends we'd rather forget," Dergarabedian said. "Unless you're 'Argo.'"

Estimated ticket sales are for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Argo," $12.4 million. ($5 million international.)

2. "Hotel Transylvania," $9.5 million. ($18.1 million international.)

3. "Cloud Atlas," $9.4 million.

Sheldon Adelson Pressures Casino Workers With Pro-Romney Voter 'Guide'

WASHINGTON -- Billionaire Sheldon Adelson apparently isn't content to influence the presidential election through his multi-million dollar donations to conservative super PACs. It seems the casino mogul wants to see his workers vote his way, too.

Management at Las Vegas Sands Corp., Adelson's casino group, has been distributing voter guides friendly to Republican nominee Mitt Romney and critical of President Barack Obama to its casino employees in Las Vegas.

Billed as a Nevada "issues guide," the pamphlets claim to help workers "protect their jobs." They were produced by Job Creator Solutions, a group founded by former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain and Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus. Although the guides do not overtly endorse any candidate, they suggest that Obama's policies on energy, health care and taxes will hurt working people, while Romney's will lead to working-class prosperity.

A manager at Las Vegas Sands' Venetian and Palazzo casino resorts told HuffPost that supervisors were instructed to hand out the guides to all employees. The manager requested anonymity to avoid being disciplined.

Las Vegas Sands spokesman Ron Reese confirmed that the pamphlets were being distributed to employees, and argued that they were non-partisan and intended merely to inform voters.

"We view it as a voter's guide," Reese said, noting that Job Creators Solutions is not party-affiliated. "We've done voters' guides over several different elections."

Indeed, the manager that HuffPost spoke with said the company had distributed such literature in the past. But previous guides had actually been guides, the manager said.

"In the past they were balanced," the manager said in an email. "Now they are handing out pamphlets that are very one-sided ... towards the candidates they prefer, Republicans. Handing this out at work by your boss is very persuasive to voters and is very intimidating as you feel if you don't support what your company supports, you may lose your job."

In addition to the Venetian and Palazzo properties, Adelson's company owns a casino in Bethlehem, Pa. Reese said he assumed the Job Creator Solutions pamphlet was being handed out company-wide. According to the manager, there are roughly 8,500 employees at the two Las Vegas properties.

With Nevada being a battleground state, the votes of Adelson's casino workers are significant. Obama is holding a lead of about three percentage points in the state, according to HuffPost's latest poll tracking data. If Obama picks up both Nevada and Ohio, Romney would have to take North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire and Virginia to win.

The workplace handout puts Adelson in an expanding crop of business executives who apparently want to influence their employees' votes this election cycle. Among those who've sent workers pro-Romney or otherwise leading emails or pamphlets include Request Foods' Jack Dewitt; Cintas Corp.'s Scott Farmer; ASG Software Solution's Arthur Allen; Wynn Resorts' Steve Wynn; Westgate Resorts' David Siegel; and the Koch brothers.

Have you been pressured at work to vote a certain way? Tell us about it. You may remain anonymous.

Although it may make many employees uncomfortable, such influence in the workplace isn't illegal. The Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling broadened the political speech rights of corporations and labor unions, allowing employers to speechify on politics to their workers.

Romney, no doubt aware of these workplace rules, has suggested to small business owners that they share their thoughts on the election with employees.

"I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise and therefore their job and their future in the upcoming elections," Romney said in a June conference call with the conservative National Federation of Independent Business. "And whether you agree with me or you agree with President Obama, or whatever your political view, I hope, I hope you pass those along to your employees."

As HuffPost reported Thursday, Adelson has given more than $50 million this election, the largest disclosed amount from a single donor for an election cycle. He and his wife kicked in $10 million to the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future during the first half of October alone. Adelson has publicly assailed Obama for "socialist" policies, but he recently admitted a more personal reason for his support of Romney over Obama.

Adelson's casino empire, most of which is based in China, is under investigation by U.S. authorities for bribery and money laundering. According to Politico's Mike Allen, "Adelson said a second Obama term would bring government 'vilification of people that were against him.' He thinks he would be at the top of that list and contends that he already has been targeted for his political activity."
