Why Travel Insurance is a Must for Travelling Abroad? - Howzzit?

This is guest post by Carlita Morandi. Carlita is an MBA and has long experience working in a big local insurance company where she was an expert in the types of travel and MC insurances (as she says in Danish MC forsikring) and thinks it is good to share her knowledge and skills with the others. She also has deep interest in travelling and exploring the world and is passionate about cars.

Travel insurance agencies will tell you that it is a must to have travel insurance if you are travelling abroad. Let this article help you decide whether you do need travel insurance by listing what can happen if you do not have travel insurance and something goes wrong.

Travel insurance

  • First, falling ill in a foreign country is not a good experience at all. Travel induced stress and health problems may magnify and you may just need to be hospitalised. It comes as a relief to know, in such a situation, that you do not have to arrange for the cash that needs to be paid at the hospital. Not having travel insurance will make a stressful situation even worse.
  • It also happens at times that your bags reach one destination while you reach another. Without travel insurance, you will not be able to get the cash to buy the basic, necessary supplies that you need to go on before your bags are finally retrieved and given to you.
  • You may think that this is something which only happens in movies or to other people, but the world is unsafe today and a terrorism incident can take place, requiring emergency supplies or evacuation.
  • Not being familiar with how a country works also means that you are at risk of having your wallet and passport stolen! Sure, this may sound rather extreme, but it is possible and does happen. While things can easily be put right if you have travel insurance, it is definitely not a piece of cake to get emergency cash and a replacement passport if you are not covered by insurance.
  • Trip cancellations are also a setback if you do not have travel insurance. Without travel insurance, you lose quite a bit of cash if you have to cancel your trip due to any reasons, such as bad weather, a natural disaster taking place in another country, illness etc.
  • Though adventure sports or other high-risk activities do involve more than just basic travel insurance, if you go abroad and climb a high mountain and meet with an accident as you go about it, not having travel insurance is going to leave you in a tight spot. However, do keep in mind that for adventure sports and sports events that you are taking part in abroad, you will need to pay a higher premium: do talk to your insurance company and learn about the details before taking any decision.

There are advantages to buying travel insurance if you are a frequent traveller, but be sure to talk personally to your insurance company so you can ask them all the questions you have about the insurance policy. Do not hesitate to have your doubts clarified. There are also many situations which are covered by government laws and you do not need any insurance for them: for example, if you buy an airline ticket with your credit card and the airline company goes bankrupt, you will receive your money back through credit card laws.
