Tell us about your business.
Inked Communications is a boutique public relations firm based in Toronto, Ontario. My business partner and I launched the company in March 2012 and have achieved great success. We are both trained journalists still working in the industry and have found a great balance between PR and journalism ? something many people don?t believe is possible. We like to work with small businesses and other entrepreneurs who have never worked with a PR firm before. We find we connect well with these people as we are young entrepreneurs ourselves.
Who are you outside of work?
I love to travel and read true crime novels and memoirs.
What motivated you to start your business or choose your profession?
My business partner and I previously worked together as in-house PR professionals. We were both working on various freelance projects and decided why not give our own company a shot! We are both writers at heart and believe strongly that PR works best when you tell the right story.
How do you overcome business challenges or obstacles?
We often rely on our own intuition and common sense, but when that fails, we turn to other entrepreneurs to learn from their experiences.
What are your greatest strengths?
I believe my greatest strengths is my ability to find the story in anything. Most of our clients tell us when we first meet them that they don?t think they are doing anything ?newsworthy?. They couldn?t be further from the truth. There is a story in everything and it is my job to define and craft that story so the media will be interested in sharing it with the public. This skill has come from years of working as a journalist and I think it is my greatest asset in my business.
What are your favourite business tools?
I?d be lying if I didn?t say the Internet here. But for a more traditional answer, I?d say my Caps and Spelling and my Canadian Press Stylebook. They are bibles for journalists and I don?t go anywhere without them.
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about writing and building my business.
What advice would you give to other business owners?
There are a lot of advantages to owning your own business, but there also a lot of unforeseen challenges. The best way to tackle those challenges is to keep as level-headed as possible and remember that most often things aren?t personal ? they are about business. That is a hard lesson to learn though.
What is the most helpful business book you have read and why?
The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau. I wouldn?t necessarily classify this book as a ?business book?, but it is the book I read that encouraged me to start my own business. If you haven?t read it, I highly recommend it.
