Zimbabwean journalists face increased intimidation

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? An independent Zimbabwean media rights group says journalists face increased intimidation, threats and assaults in their work as elections scheduled next year draw near.

A researcher for the Africa Media Barometer, Chris Mhike, said Friday that Zimbabwean journalists are "treading on dangerous grounds" by writing about President Robert Mugabe, the police, army and other individuals in power. Mhike was speaking at the launch of the barometer, a survey to monitor progress on media freedom which is sponsored by the Media Institute of Southern Africa.

Mhike said the majority of people in Zimbabwe still live in fear which is made worse by draconian laws that allow journalists and citizens to be arrested for the "flimsiest of reasons."

Tunisia PM refuses to resign after protests

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's Islamist prime minister rejected calls for his resignation on Thursday after two days of violent protests against economic hardship, and he accused opposition parties of sowing disorder.

At least 200 people were injured when demonstrators demanding jobs clashed with police on Tuesday and Wednesday in Siliana, a city on the edge of the Sahara whose inhabitants have long complained of neglect.

Protesters and a prominent leftist politician called upon Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali to step down after the violence. A leading trade union had called for the protests.

"In democratic systems, we don't force down governments. I'm not going to resign or dissolve the government. It's parliament that has authority to do that," Jebali told a news conference.

"We know who is behind these events - the opposition parties," he said.

The state news agency said police had used tear gas to try to break up further demonstrations on Thursday.

The protests are the fiercest since hardline Salafi Islamists attacked the U.S. embassy in Tunis in September over an anti-Islam film made in California. That violence left four people dead.

The government led by the Islamist Ennahda party to which Jebali belongs has sought to revive the economy after a fall in trade with the crisis-hit euro zone.

Tension between secularists and Salafis over the direction of the North African state has also hit the economy, which has yet to recover from the instability that followed the toppling of autocratic leader Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali last year.

This week the government secured World Bank and African Development Bank loans of $1 billion to cover its 2013 expenditure, but said it could ask the International Monetary Fund for a $2.5 billion credit line for 2014 and beyond.

Jebali said the latest protests would discourage investors.

"The silence of media and the opposition over the violence against the state threatens our democratic experiment," he said. "Certain politicians who lost in the elections want violence and disorder."

Jebali has accused both Salafis and liberal elites of harming Tunisia's economy and image through their conflict with each other. Ennahda tries to present itself as a middle way between liberals and Salafis.

"We have rejected the violence of people who want to impose their way of life under the pretext of religion, and we refuse the violence of these people too," he said.

'Hobbit' premiere draws estimated 100,000 fans

By Pip Bulbeck, The Hollywood Reporter

An estimated hundred thousand New Zealanders turned out along the 1,600-foot red carpet, which took the stars two hours to negotiate at the world premiere of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in the New Zealand capital of Wellington on Wednesday afternoon local time.

The event took place nine years after the red carpet was rolled out to host the premiere of the "Fellowship of The Ring" on the same streets.

PHOTOS: The hard road to "The Hobbit"

Elijah Wood, who reprises his role as Frodo Baggins in the "Hobbit" films, said he was relying on muscle memory to take him to the Embassy Theater, where many of the cast and crew saw the completed film for the first time.

A large international press contingent and others were the first to see the film at a screening Monday night, but were under a strict embargo that kept people from commenting on or reviewing the film before the end of the premiere.

PHOTOS: Meet "The Hobbit's" key characters

But Wood paid tribute to Martin Freeman?in the lead role of Bilbo Baggins. "He was brilliant -- the right amount of funny," he said. "He has strange qualities, but also real heart. He is the heart of the movie, and he really pulled it off."

Attendees also lauded the technical quality of the film and its higher frame rate.

Richard Armitage, who plays dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield, said about working with Jackson: ?The thing that inspires me is that he?s as fascinated with technology and where film can go as he is with story and character. Something incredible has been created that?s never been seen before."

PHOTOS: "The Hobbit": 17 new posters introduce characters going on "An Unexpected Journey"

Director/producer Bryan Singer tweeted:? "Just saw ?#Hobbit?. Having some serious frame rate envy. Amazing and involving. Loved it! And ?@ianmckellen118?, my friend, you are brilliant!"

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, who allowed the film to keep shooting in New Zealand by changing labor laws and underwriting an extra $25 million in incentives two years ago said: ?New Zealand took a risk investing in 'The Hobbit,'? and ?it's paid off.? Jackson, he said, is a ?genius.?

Oscar winner Joe Letteri,?Weta Digital?s head of visual effects, was somewhat more reserved, saying that ?after tonight we?ve got he rest of the story to tell. ?Weta Workshop tweeted: ?To all of you who have joined us for the wild ride leading up to this day - a big thank you from the Weta team."

Cast and crew pose on stage at the world premiere.

It seems demand to see the film in its native higher bit rate of 48 frames per second is high, at least in New Zealand, with sessions at those cinemas screening at the higher frame rate selling out, according to reports. The film formally opens in New Zealand on Dec. 14. According to the NZ Herald, a decision by exhibitors Hoyts and Event Cinemas to dedicate a screen in every theater to projecting the film at the higher frame rate has created a rush for tickets.

It has been reported that only 1,000 cinemas worldwide will have the capacity to screen the film in the higher frame rate in 3-D.

Fans worldwide were able to watch the red carpet proceedings live on the Internet thanks to a feed from Warner Bros.

Tourism New Zealand is expecting a boost in the tens of millions of dollars from the "Hobbit" films. Meanwhile, Jackson said he would take a short break before getting back to post-production on the second and third films after Christmas.

And Graham McTavish, who plays dwarf Dwalin, revealed that there would be another two months of film work in May next year for some of the cast.

As Jackson finishes work on the second and third films, another duo of blockbuster sequels is being created not far from Jackson?s hometown.

Avatar director James Cameron told reporters on the red carpet that he has taken up residence on his new farm in Wairapa, a short flight from Wellington, to write "Avatar 2" and "3."

He told reporters that he needed the solitude so he could give the scripts his full attention. However, he was enjoying his new home so much that it was distracting him, he added.

And as befits a family film, Weta Workshop chief Richard Taylor?acknowledged that he was waiting to see the finished "Hobbit" with his family, while Jackson walked the red carpet with his daughter Katie, who was just three years old when work on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy started. Asked if she wanted to follow the family movie-making tradition -- her mother Fran Walsh?is Jackson?s co-writer and co producer -- she quipped: ?You never know, I might carry it on.? Jackson, obviously pleased at the prospect, said ?she?s extremely clever. It?d be fantastic if she did.?

While Jackson was the first to arrive on the red carpet, he also had the last word.

?It's been two years with this narrow focus on the film where we were trying to keep everybody out," he said. "You have security, you don't want people to know what you're doing. Then you get to that moment where filming's over, and 100,000 people come along to the premiere. It's kind of like the whole world has turned upside down."

The beginning of everything: New paradigm shift for the infant universe

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? A new paradigm for understanding the earliest eras in the history of the universe has been developed by scientists at Penn State University. Using techniques from an area of modern physics called loop quantum cosmology, developed at Penn State, the scientists now have extended analyses that include quantum physics farther back in time than ever before -- all the way to the beginning. The new paradigm of loop quantum origins shows, for the first time, that the large-scale structures we now see in the universe evolved from fundamental fluctuations in the essential quantum nature of "space-time," which existed even at the very beginning of the universe over 14 billion years ago. The achievement also provides new opportunities for testing competing theories of modern cosmology against breakthrough observations expected from next-generation telescopes.

The research will be published on 11 December 2012 as an "Editor's Suggestion" paper in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

"We humans always have yearned to understand more about the origin and evolution of our universe," said Abhay Ashtekar, the senior author of the paper. "So it is an exciting time in our group right now, as we begin using our new paradigm to understand, in more detail, the dynamics that matter and geometry experienced during the earliest eras of the universe, including at the very beginning." Ashtekar is the Holder of the Eberly Family Chair in Physics at Penn State and the director of the university's Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos. Coauthors of the paper, along with Ashtekar, are postdoctoral fellows Ivan Agullo and William Nelson.

The new paradigm provides a conceptual and mathematical framework for describing the exotic "quantum-mechanical geometry of space-time" in the very early universe. The paradigm shows that, during this early era, the universe was compressed to such unimaginable densities that its behavior was ruled not by the classical physics of Einstein's general theory of relativity, but by an even more fundamental theory that also incorporates the strange dynamics of quantum mechanics. The density of matter was huge then -- 1094 grams per cubic centimeter, as compared with the density of an atomic nucleus today, which is only 1014 grams.

In this bizarre quantum-mechanical environment -- where one can speak only of probabilities of events rather than certainties -- physical properties naturally would be vastly different from the way we experience them today. Among these differences, Ashtekar said, are the concept of "time," as well as the changing dynamics of various systems over time as they experience the fabric of quantum geometry itself.

No space observatories have been able to detect anything as long ago and far away as the very early eras of the universe described by the new paradigm. But a few observatories have come close. Cosmic background radiation has been detected in an era when the universe was only 380-thousand years old. By that time, after a period of rapid expansion called "inflation," the universe had burst out into a much-diluted version of its earlier super-compressed self. At the beginning of inflation, the density of the universe was a trillion times less than during its infancy, so quantum factors now are much less important in ruling the large-scale dynamics of matter and geometry.

Observations of the cosmic background radiation show that the universe had a predominantly uniform consistency after inflation, except for a light sprinkling of some regions that were more dense and others that were less dense. The standard inflationary paradigm for describing the early universe, which uses the classical-physics equations of Einstein, treats space-time as a smooth continuum. "The inflationary paradigm enjoys remarkable success in explaining the observed features of the cosmic background radiation. Yet this model is incomplete. It retains the idea that the universe burst forth from nothing in a Big Bang, which naturally results from the inability of the paradigm's general-relativity physics to describe extreme quantum-mechanical situations," Agullo said. "One needs a quantum theory of gravity, like loop quantum cosmology, to go beyond Einstein in order to capture the true physics near the origin of the universe."

Earlier work with loop quantum cosmology in Ashtekar's group had updated the concept of the Big Bang with the intriguing concept of a Big Bounce, which allows the possibility that our universe emerged not from nothing but from a super-compressed mass of matter that previously may have had a history of its own.

Even though the quantum-mechanical conditions at the beginning of the universe were vastly different from the classical-physics conditions after inflation, the new achievement by the Penn State physicists reveals a surprising connection between the two different paradigms that describe these eras. When scientists use the inflation paradigm together with Einstein's equations to model the evolution of the seed-like areas sprinkled throughout the cosmic background radiation, they find that the irregularities serve as seeds that evolve over time into the galaxy clusters and other large-scale structures that we see in the universe today. Amazingly, when the Penn State scientists used their new loop-quantum-origins paradigm with its quantum-cosmology equations, they found that fundamental fluctuations in the very nature of space at the moment of the Big Bounce evolve to become the seed-like structures seen in the cosmic microwave background.

"Our new work shows that the initial conditions at the very beginning of the universe naturally lead to the large-scale structure of the universe that we observe today," Ashtekar said. "In human terms, it is like taking a snapshot of a baby right at birth and then being able to project from it an accurate profile of how that person will be at age 100."

"This paper pushes back the genesis of the cosmic structure of our universe from the inflationary epoch all the way to the Big Bounce, covering some 11 orders of magnitude in the density of matter and the curvature of space-time," Nelson said. "We now have narrowed down the initial conditions that could exist at the Big Bounce, plus we find that the evolution of those initial conditions agrees with observations of the cosmic background radiation."

The team's results also identify a narrower range of parameters for which the new paradigm predicts novel effects, distinguishing it from standard inflation. Ashtekar said, "It is exciting that we soon may be able to test different predictions from these two theories against future discoveries with next-generation observational missions. Such experiments will help us to continue gaining a deeper understanding of the very, very early universe."

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Canada: BC leading the way in HIV-AIDS fight, but other provinces slow to follow

Via The Globe and Mail, an important story by Andr? Picard:?B.C. leading the way in HIV-AIDS fight, but other provinces slow to follow. Excerpt (but read the whole thing):
B.C. is the only province where the rate of new HIV infections is falling steadily and markedly. B.C. is also the only province that offers highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) free of charge and aggressively promotes its use.?
Coincidence? Not at all.?
New research published in Wednesday?s edition of the medical journal Public Library of Science One shows that for every 10-per-cent increase in the number of HIV-positive patients taking HAART, new HIV diagnoses fell 8 per cent ? pretty close to a perfect correlation.?
These are some of the most compelling data to date demonstrating the soundness of the ?treatment as prevention? theory, an approach conceived at the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV-AIDS and now being embraced worldwide.?
Treatment as prevention ? or TaP for short, because in the world of HIV-AIDS, acronyms are de rigueur ? is so successful, from Zimbabwe to Abbotsford, that policy-makers now talk openly about the possibility of freezing the epidemic in its tracks and creating an AIDS-free generation.?
As is too often the case though, Canadians are slow to embrace Canadian innovation.?
Consider that a young man diagnosed today as HIV-positive at age 20 and placed on HAART can expect to live to age 73, a life expectancy near normal.?
By taking a cocktail of medication that suppresses replication of the virus, this man will have little likelihood of passing it on to his sexual partner(s).?
That, of course, is the goal: To stop new infections, in addition to keeping those who are already infected from falling prey to killer opportunistic infections.?
Development of an AIDS vaccine is proving to be bedevilling, so TaP remains the closest thing we have. Of course, it is an adjunct, not a replacement for other preventive actions such as use of condoms and harm-reduction measures like supervised drug injection.?
Treating HIV-positive pregnant women with HAART is nearly 100-per-cent effective in preventing transmission of the AIDS virus to their babies. In discordant couples ? where one partner is infected and the other is not ? infection rates fall 95 per cent if the HIV-positive partner takes HAART. But if treatment as prevention is going to be fully effective, it is essential to get as many HIV-positive people as possible on it.?
For that to happen, two measures are required : Universal testing and free treatment.

Facebook stock climbs after upgrade

(AP) ? Facebook's stock is climbing after an upgrade from an analyst who believes Wall Street is underestimating the company's potential to grow revenue.

Bernstein Research analyst Carlos Kirjner said Monday that Facebook Inc. is likely to beat Wall Street's revenue expectations over the next 12 to 24 months. He expects Facebook to hit $6.98 billion in revenue in 2013, some 9 percent higher than the average analyst's expectation. In 2011, the social network reported revenue of $3.71 billion.

Kirjner upgraded Facebook's stock to "Outperform" from "Market Perform," saying that mobile advertising will drive revenue growth.

Facebook's stock is up $1.85, or 7.7 percent, at $25.84. It's still down 32 percent from its initial public offering price of $38.

Egypt's stock market tumbles after Morsi's decree

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's benchmark stock index plunged by nearly 10 percent Sunday in the first trading session since the country's Islamist president issued decrees to assume sweeping new powers, while police in central Cairo fired tear gas at protesters who accuse the Egyptian leader of a blatant power grab.

President Mohammed Morsi's edicts, which were announced on Thursday, place him above oversight of any kind, including that of the courts. The move has thrown Egypt's already troubled transition to democracy into further turmoil, sparking angry protests across the country to demand the decrees be immediately rescinded.

The judiciary, which was the main target of Morsi's edicts, has pushed back. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from several courts in Cairo and across much of the country.

The nation's highest judicial body called on judges and prosecutors to return to work and announced that its members would meet with Mosri on Monday to try to persuade him to restrict immunity to major state decisions like declaring war or martial law.

With the opening bell of the country's stock market on Sunday, the first day of the workweek in Egypt, the turmoil spread from the country's bitter politics to its already ailing economy. The Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index dropped 9.59 percentage points, making the losses among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks immediately after the ouster in a popular uprising of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak last year.

The loss in the value of shares was estimated at close to $5 billion.

Morsi, who narrowly won the presidency in June, says his measures were designed to "protect the revolution," but they triggered an uproar among non-Islamist political groups now vowing to press on with street protests to force him to back down.

Late Sunday, Morsi's office issued an English-language statement defending his decrees, repeating the argument he used when addressing supporters Friday outside his Cairo palace that the measures were designed to bolster the country's transition to democratic rule and dismantle Mubarak's old regime.

"The presidency reiterates the temporary nature of the said measures, which are not meant to concentrate powers," it said. The statement also pledged Morsi's commitment to engaging all political forces in drafting a new constitution. Secular and Christian members withdrew from the panel drafting the document, claiming that the Islamists who dominate the body have hijacked the process to produce a charter with an Islamist slant.

Prominent Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless Morsi rescinds his new powers, as the country's long fragmented opposition sought to unite and rally new protests.

Egypt's liberal and secular forces ? long divided, weakened and uncertain amid the rise of Islamist parties to power ? are seeking to rally themselves in response to the decrees.

On Sunday, protesters clashed with police in Cairo's Tahrir square, birthplace of the uprising that toppled Mubarak, and in the side streets and avenues leading off the plaza. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, said 267 protesters have been arrested and 164 policemen injured since the unrest began a week ago, initially to mark the anniversary of street protests a year ago against the nation's then-military rulers. Forty-two protesters were killed in those demonstrations.

The ministry did not say how many protesters were injured in the latest clashes, but security officials put the figure at 260. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

Several dozen protesters are staging a sit-in in Tahrir, vowing not to leave before Morsi rescinds his decrees. The two sides have called for massive rival protests on Tuesday at two Cairo locations less than a mile apart, raising the possibility of renewed clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi.

In the latest sign of the unrest sweeping the country, suspected militants blew up a military installation under construction in the central Sinai Peninsula area of al-Qaseema early Sunday, wounding three workers, according to security officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

It was the second blast to target a military building in Sinai in as many days. On Saturday, another border guard structure under construction was blown up in Rafah, close to the Israeli border.

Nobody claimed responsibility for either attack, but authorities have been battling al-Qaida-inspired militants in Sinai who have stepped up attacks against Egyptian security forces, and even on occasion staged cross-border raids targeting Israelis.

Israel successfully tests missile defense system

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel successfully tested its newest missile defense system Sunday, the military said, a step toward making the third leg of what Israel calls its "multilayer missile defense" operational.

The "David's Sling" system is designed to stop mid-range missiles. It successfully passed its test, shooting down its first missile in a drill Sunday in southern Israel, the military said.

The system is designed to intercept projectiles with ranges of up to 300 kilometers (180 miles).

Israel has also deployed Arrow systems for longer-range threats from Iran. The Iron Dome protects against short-range rockets fired by militants in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. Iron Dome shot down hundreds of rockets from Gaza in this month's round of fighting.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the success of Iron Dome highlighted the "immense importance" of such systems.

"David's Sling," also known "Magic Wand," is developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and U.S.-based Raytheon Co. and is primarily designed to counter the large arsenal of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon.

The military said the program, which is on schedule for deployment in 2014, would "provide an additional layer of defense against ballistic missiles."

The next generation of the Arrow, now in the development stage, is set to be deployed in 2016. Called the Arrow 3, it is designed to strike its target outside the atmosphere, intercepting missiles closer to their launch sites. Together, the two Arrow systems would provide two chances to strike down incoming missiles.

Israel also uses U.S.-made Patriot missile defense batteries against mid-range missiles, though these failed to hit any of the 39 Scud missiles fired at Israel from Iraq In the first Gulf War 20 years ago. Manufacturers say the Patriot system has been improved since then.

iPhone 5 vs. Droid DNA: Which phone should you get?

iPhone 5 vs. Droid DNA: Which phone should you get?

No sooner does Apple released the iPhone 5 than HTC and Verizon escalate with the Droid DNA. Where the iPhone 5 is slim and sophisticated, the Droid DNA is big and brutally powerful. Where Apple is anodized aluminum, HTC is soft-touch polycarbonate. Where iOS is consistent across all Apple's mobile products, HTC Sense changes up the Android interface for good or for ill. From atom to bit, the iPhone 5 and the Droid DNA couldn't be more different. So if you're looking for a new phone on Verizon, how do you choose between them?

HTC Droid DNA

The HTC Droid is huge. It's not part tablet, part phone, if such things concern you, but with a 5-inch screen, it's about as big as a phone can get. What's more, that 5-inch screen houses and incredible 1920x1080 (1080p) screen at a retina-rupturing 440ppi. It's the biggest, densest display on the market today. However, all that screen-power is being driven by the same Snapdragon S4 Pro horse-power that drives other, much smaller displays, like the 720p Nexus 4. HiDPI comes at a performance price, after all. The cameras are both excellent, with an 8 megapixel f/2.0, 1080p sensor with BSI on the back, and a 2.1 megapixel, 1080p sensor, also with BSI, on the front. The bad news is that the battery is only 2020mAh, which some will find acceptable and others won't, and Verizon is only offering the Droid DNA with 16GB, no more. And that's not a lot of space when you're dealing with 1080p.

The Droid DNA shops with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, but should get an Android 4.2 update at some point. As usual with HTC devices, instead of the stock Google experience, you get the Sense interface, in this case, Sense 4+. You get 5 Home screens, adorned, of course, with the iconic HTC clock. You've also got a suite of Amazon media apps, whose streaming capabilities should help reduce the burden on the 16GB of storage (technically 11GB once the OS and apps are factored in), and a few other pre-installed apps, courtesy of Verizon.

In the Verizon Droid DNA review, Phil Nickinson of Android Central summed it up like this:

The simple fact is this: Alongside the Samsung Galaxy S3, the HTC Droid DNA is the best Android phone you can get on Verizon. Display, power, camera, and it's running Jelly Bean out of the box. What more do you need?

In the U.S., the Droid DNA is exclusive to Verizon, though versions of the same basic phone, with different names, will likely show up on different networks, especially internationally, at some point.

Apple iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 has a completely re-engineered unibody aluminum chassis to allow for a bigger 4-inch screen in a phone that's 12% smaller by volume. It's taller but not wider, thinner and also lighter. That 4-inch screen uses in-cell technology to combine the touch sensor right into the LCD so the pixels look painted on. At 1136x640 and 326ppi, it's still backlit LED, and still IPS, and while nowhere near the biggest, it's still one of the most advanced panels on the market. Apple also rolled their own, manually-set Apple A6 processor this time, based on ARM v7s, for high performance and excellent power management. There is CDMA, HSPA, and international LTE. And you can get it in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions. There's still no NFC or wireless charging, however.

iOS 6 comes loaded on the iPhone 5, and includes a new, controversial Maps app, some great extensions to Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, deep Facebook integration, Passbook for tickets and vouchers, and enhancements to FaceTime, Mail, Safari, Photo Stream, Panorama, and Accessibility. And because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, there's no integration cost, no added interface layers, and a seamless experience overall.

iTunes has the biggest international content footprint, so if you're into buying your music, TV, and movies, there's a better chance Apple will take your money than anyone else. They also have the free iCloud service for backup, restore, and sync, as well as Apple Retail Stores with Genius Bars which, if you ever break your phone, you'll absolutely consider a killer service.

In the iPhone 5 review, I summed it up as follows:

Taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter; the iPhone 5 represents nothing more nor less than the latest, relentless iteration on the Platonic ideal Apple has been striving towards for almost a decade. Redesigned in every way but shape, compromised but true to its purpose, the iPhone 5 is once again the best iPhone Apple has ever made, and one of the best phones ever made. Period.

The price on-contract price for an iPhone 5 is $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB, unlocked and off-contract is $650, $750, and $850 respectively.

Apple iPhone 5 vs. HTC Droid DNA: The bottom line

The Droid DNA has absolutely the biggest, sharpest screen on the market, and if pure pixel density is your measure, the best one too. HTC Sense is a mixed blessing -- some love it, others hate it. Like the Verizon crap-ware that comes pre-installed, however, you'll have to root and flash a different ROM, like Cyanogen, to get an experience that's closer to stock. Also, while Android Central didn't encounter major battery or performance issues, other reviews have found them problematic (but then, the same could be said about the iPhone.) 16GB of storage is anemic, however, no matter how you slice it. Still, but for that, and from a pure tech and spec perspective, the Droid DNA is arguably the baddest ass Android phone on the planet now. And if you're on Verizon, or willing to switch to Verizon, and don't want an iPhone, it really looks like the phone to beat.

The iPhone 5 manages to fit a 4-inch screen into a phone that's ludicrously thin and light, and built like nothing else on the market. iOS 6 is iOS 6 on every iPhone that supports it, so there's no third-party layer on top of the core operating system. That's either a plus or a negative, depending on how you feel about iOS. There's also no crap-ware, however, and no carrier pre-installed anything. There's also 32GB and 64GB options if you want to store more apps and media on your iPhone. And you can get the iPhone 5 -- the same iPhone 5 -- on almost any carrier you choose. You can also get iTunes content in more countries than any other media store, and Apple Retail provides the best customer care in the business.

If you're on Verizon and want an LTE phone, and the even the idea of 1080p display sends you heart racing, get the HTC Droid DNA. Otherwise, for most people, most of the time, the cliche remains true -- get the iPhone.

Jets' Tebow reveals he has 2 broken ribs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Tim Tebow stood on the sideline with a cap on and his hands in his pockets as Jets fans chanted his name.

They wanted to see the backup quarterback in a 49-19 blowout loss to New England on Thursday night. Turns out, there was little chance Tebow would see a snap.

Tebow, who didn't play at all, revealed after the game that he broke two ribs in the Jets' loss at Seattle two weeks ago.

"They need a little time to get better," Tebow said, adding that his breathing has been affected by the injury.

He was listed as questionable for the game with a rib ailment, but fully practiced Wednesday. Coach Rex Ryan had reservations about making Tebow active, deciding to use him only "if we absolutely had to have him," and leaving third-stringer Greg McElroy inactive.

"I appreciate his concern," Tebow said. "I had to do a little bit of talking just to dress, but I just want to be there for my teammates in case they needed me in an emergency situation."

Tebow has had a limited role in the Jets' offense this season after being acquired from the Denver Broncos in March. He was expected to add a dynamic element to the offense, particularly in the wildcat package, but he is averaging only about seven plays on offense.

He is playing regularly as the personal punt protector on special teams, but thinks the injury occurred on an offensive play against the Seahawks.

"I didn't really know," he said. "I just kept playing and started to feel it later on."

He played in the Jets' win at St. Louis on Sunday, but had an MRI exam Monday that revealed the extent of the injury.

Tebow has been practicing, but isn't certain how long he will be hindered by the injury. He hopes to be healthy enough to play in the Jets' next game against Arizona on Dec. 2.

"I was ready to go if they needed me," he said. "Obviously, it wasn't ideal. I just wanted to be there for my teammates and do whatever I can to help."

Ryan said the injury appeared to get "progressively worse" as the week went on and noticed his breathing sounded different.

"I was standing there and I was like, 'I'm not going to play this kid,'" Ryan said. "I wouldn't play my son in that kind of situation. To Tim's credit, he wanted to be there for his team."

Google Shopping Becomes More Amazon-Like - NYTimes.com

Google Shopping has been giving itself a makeover in time for holiday shopping ? and it is starting to look a lot more like Amazon.com.

Last week, it introduced wish lists for saving items and sharing them with friends, 360-degree photographs of items, retailer promotions and product reviews.

These updates came after Google made a big change this fall, for the first time including retailers in Google Shopping only if they pay to list their products there. Google said this would make the listings better, because retailers would have an incentive to list up-to-date items.

But as a result, Google Shopping?s listings are less comprehensive than they were before. For example, Amazon has so far refused to pay for listings, so a Google search for the Kindle does not show Amazon, which makes the Kindle, in shopping results.

On Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan, a search industry expert, outlined in greater detail some of the service?s recent weaknesses in a post called ?The Mess That Is Google Shopping.?

The lack of comprehensiveness means that Google risks losing shoppers to other comparison shopping sites or to Amazon, even as it tries to keep them. In a shift, more people now start product searches on Amazon instead of Google, according to Forrester data. That is a problem for Google for a few reasons, the biggest of which is that retail searches and search ads are among its biggest businesses.

Google is trying to lure retailers by offering new features for its shopping search. They include 360-degree photos of items, starting with holiday toys. With Shortlists, people can save items they like and share lists with friends, and Google and retailers gain insight into what shoppers want to buy.

Google is also trying to attract shoppers with exclusive promotions that retailers can offer through the site. These also show up on mobile apps for Google Maps and Google Offers. And Google has expanded its product reviews. Google has long drawn product reviews from around the Web, but now people can write their own on Google and see reviews from people they know on Google Plus ranked at the top when they do a product search.

Reviews have been one of Amazon?s biggest selling points for shopping search because of the volume of shoppers there. This shopping season will provide some clues as to whether Google can lure back some of the shoppers who have turned to Amazon for search.

i don't like double posting, but felt this should be known to the roleplayers. Some info on Eden/Gehenna, and important to the plot.. Or at least I feel it is. Kuroe is the one who created this part, mainly I think for his characters, but also I feel its important for The Raven and Master Eldorado. So yeah.. Added this info for you all. And props and thanks to Kuroe. He has been a major help with helping me create this RP, he helped get what I wanted and saw in my head for this RP... Yeah.. I'm really happy.. and currently exhausted. But I think I got everything I need to now.

Okay, so when the first settlers arrived at the ruins of the underground city beneath the dome which would become Eden, by burrowing underground like in minecraft, they found very advanced machinery which was lying in a dormant state.
It was in a state of great disrepair, however, but the head of the newly formed excavation and recovery team, a scientist now called "mother" in the rp, found the dome's purpose: to eliminate any impurities that might be harmful to life, as well as effectively destroying most electronic instruments within its area.
Beneath it was a vast underground city, where machinery used to support the dome dwelled
The experiments and mission to restore the city and technology to working order was named "El Dorado".
After a year or so, traces and references of two AI were found in the logs on the computers which had been brought back to life.
One of these was recovered a month later by the team, on the very lowest level of the underground city. It was an AI linked with the mechanisms powering the whole of the area, in the form of a girl. It was fully robotic, but somehow, after being restored to working order, had a mind equal to that of a human.
Her memory banks were corrupted and she held no outside knowledge other than how to power and control the areas below the surface. The dome, though, remained outside their reach. Literally, too. It was locked from the inside and out. However, the AI remembered one thing: that her "brother" the second AI was lying somewhere in the dome, and that he could help them.
The team, then following some directions in schematic blueprints they found of the dome, managed to bypass the system and make their way into the heart of the dome to the main control terminal, where they found a boy, not unlike the first AI, plugged into the machines and rendered immobile. Upon powering the machines, the AI woke up and demonstrated its ability of complete control over every aspect of the dome, including the growth of life. This machine prove to be more advanced than anything seen below the surface. It was a bio-integrated machine that spanned the whole of the dome. The memory of the computers and the second AI remained completely intact, and it was revealed that the purpose of the first AI was to do maintenance on the dome, and that she had little control over anything outside the city underground.
After this, the team managed to restore the city, which had fallen into disrepair as well, nearly to complete working order. It was decided that "Mother" would take charge of keeping the city's heart a secret and keeping the AIs in working order. She also had to keep them separate, as they both showed a desire to be together, and let the male AI out of his confinement. He still, however, continued to make the city work as long as he was plugged into the mainframe.

Polymer chemistry: Dual-function molecules enhance widely used chemical reaction while reducing harmful by-products

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Production of biocompatible and super-absorbent materials may become easier, thanks to Anbanandam Parthiban and co-workers at the A*STAR Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences. Using a modification to the high-precision technique known as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which links molecules into long chains, the researchers have developed new compounds that can directly polymerize acidic vinyl monomers, such as acrylic acid.

Acrylic acid polymers are water-absorbing materials widely used in diapers and as emulsifying agents for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Previous attempts to use ATRP with polar vinyl monomers, including acrylic acid, were unsuccessful, a failure that some chemists attributed to catalyst 'poisoning' by carboxylic acids. Parthiban and his team's compounds resolve this problem by binding to the catalyst while simultaneously initiating the radical polymerization process. This process prevents poisoning and dramatically reduces metallic waste.

Despite ATRP's inability to directly produce acrylic acid polymers, it is used in laboratories worldwide: it allows researchers to assemble complex polymers in a step-by-step fashion that gives enormous control over product architectures. The key is using a catalyst that can readily switch between two oxidation states, such as a copper salt, explains Parthiban. The copper catalyst first interacts with an ATRP initiator molecule to activate organic free radicals and an oxidized metal complex. The free radicals then quickly polymerize target monomers, while the metal complex undergoes equilibrium with a dormant, lower oxidation state. With appropriate reaction conditions, chemists can then restart polymerization with new monomers.

Parthiban and co-workers addressed ATRP's limitation by developing 'unimolecular ligand-initiator systems' (ULIS), a series of branched molecules containing multiple binding sites for copper atoms, as well as halogens for activating free radical species. In this approach, the ULIS molecules become part of the polymer chain during the active-dormant cycles instead of remaining isolated. The researchers envisaged that this interconnection would suppress the acidic side-reactions that lead to catalyst poisoning.

Experiments by the researchers proved their theories correct: they could efficiently polymerize acrylic acid and other vinyl monomers using ULIS-promoted ATRP (see image). Surprisingly, they found that these reactions could be achieved using less than 100 parts-per-million concentrations of copper catalyst, a quantity comparable to residues left in conventional ATRP purified polymers.

Parthiban notes that although the ULIS ligands are part of the polymer chain and might be expected to produce high amounts of metal waste, the homogenous nature of intramolecular-based free radical polymerization allows less metal to be used -- an important consequence for sustainable chemistry efforts.
