My favorite grief quotes

November 16, 2012 - 03:22 PM

Helen Keller once said, "What we have enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us." By the time that we have survived only a few years on this planet, most certainly we have experienced some form of grief. It may be something as small as losing a toy or is great as the loss of a parent. Assuredly grief will always be a part of our lives. Although it's painful, in some ways it gives us an affirmation that we are truly alive.

Bernie Siegel summed this up quite nicely. He said, "One cannot get through life without pain... what we can do is choose how to use the pain life presents to us." Grief is a natural process. We often define ourselves by our connections to other people, places, and things. I can also add to that our expectations to how we expect our future to unfold. When we lose this connection or our expectations do not occur as we project, we go through a rather disturbing adjustment phase. This is not just mental. We also react physically by filling the pain and even possibly shedding a tear or two. This phase, which we call grief, is something we all experience over and over again. As Dr. Siegel says, it is how we use the experience that shapes how our life unfolds.

Psychologists believe that the ability to experience and recover from a grieving period is part of our mental health. It is also necessary to experience the grief, because if we do not yet the adjustments never occur. This may mean that adverse consequences may arise later. Conversely, as grieving helps us get in touch with our core personality it helps reinforce a healthy sense of self. Each time we go through this process we stand stronger and more capable. Furthermore, our cumulative strength allows us to coach others. As we have been there we become capable guides. Personally, I feel that this is a very important aspect of compassion. When I lost my father, the compassion that I received from others who had previously experienced a similar loss was a very big part of my healing process.
